Randall had appeared in the cast of the Broadway play, but in Dailey's role, not the one he plays in the film. He replaced Gig Young during the show's run.
This was based on a popular Broadway comedy by the well-known Edward Chodorov. Shockingly, this film makes no mention of him - he had been blacklisted.
Because the author of the play, Jerome Chodorov, had been blacklisted, the only reference to the play in the film's credits was that it was "Based on a Play Produced by Cheryl Crawford."
The play on which the film is based opened on December 17, 1953 and ran for 382 performances. The original cast included Betsy von Furstenberg, Gig Young, Franchot Tone, Larry Blyden, Anne Jackson, and Tony Randall. In addition to writing the play, Jerome Chodorov directed the production.
