This film received just one Academy Award nomination, for Best Original Screenplay. When it won the award, eyebrows were raised, because it was generally acknowledged that this movie was an unofficial retread of an earlier MGM film, La donna del giorno (1942).
At one point, "How Little We Know" plays in the background. The song is one Lauren Bacall sang in her first movie Acque del Sud (1944) where she fell in love with Humphrey Bogart.
James Stewart and Grace Kelly were intended to be the co-stars of this movie, but after Kelly became betrothed to Prince Rainier of Monaco, Stewart decided not to do it (a decision he later said he regretted), and the leading roles went to Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall.
Although they knew each other before co-starring in this film, it was while making this movie that Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall cemented a friendship that would last until Peck's death.
Jack Cole, who plays Randy Owens, the choreographer for the play within the movie, was also the choreographer for the movie. When he demonstrates a dance move he calls "Seahorses", he is reprising a move he created when he choreographed the musical Uno straniero tra gli angeli (1955), another Vincente Minnelli film.
