The role of Ina Massine was originally intended for June Allyson. It was decided to assign Kathryn Grayson in her first non-singing role as Allyson's replacement. It was Van Johnson and Grayson's first film together.
In two movies, Kathryn Grayson sang the aria "Mi Chiamano Mimi" from Giacomo Puccini's acclaimed opera, "La Boheme" (lyrics by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa). Miss Grayson's black-and-white performance was done for this MGM film and her Technicolor reprise, on loan to Warner Bros., was seen in the Grace Moore biopic, Sogno di boheme (1953).
From an original story by the producer, Samuel Marx, titled 'Shake Well Before Using,' this picture was Marx' last film for the studio and a relationship that began with Irving Thalberg in 1930.
