The original story was written with Marion Davies in mind to play the poetess Edwina Corday.

Frank Faylen has an uncredited role as a stage hand. He later would play Ernie the cab driver in La vita è meravigliosa (1946). Other actors, besides James Stewart, in both pictures are Mike Lally, Ray Walker, Brick Sullivan, Philip Morris, and Monya Andre.

A large portion of the story takes place in Saugerties, New York, a town on the Hudson River, about 100 miles north of New York City.

The only feature film James Stewart and Claudette Colbert made together.

Myrna Loy was scheduled for the part of Edwina but had to withdraw due to prior commitments. Frances Drake was also considered for the lead.
