Reportedly, Erle Stanley Gardner, the author of the books, did not approve of the casting of Ricardo Cortez as Perry Mason. He, therefore, was replaced by Donald Woods after doing only one movie. Ironically, many feel that Cortez's performance and this movie, in general, are the best of the series.
After appearing in earlier entries as Spudsy Drake, Perry's detective assistant/friend is now referred to as Paul Drake.
Director Alan Crosland died in an auto accident during filming and was replaced by William C. McGann.
Fifth of six "Perry Mason" films released by Warner Bros. from 1934 to 1937, and the first without Warren William in the lead role.
There is no black cat in the movie. There is a cat, who plays an important part in the mystery, but it is not black. The working title of the film was the same as the story upon which it was based: "The Case of the Caretaker's Cat". It is speculation that the title was changed because the film was released on Halloween.
