Loretta Young and Spencer Tracy began a torrid love affair that lasted about a year. Young ended the relationship ostensibly due to not being granted absolution because she was dating a married Catholic.
The original film released in 1933 was 78 minutes in length. For years, the only surviving print is the edited 1938 (post-Production Code) re-release, 66 minutes long. Recently, Sony/Columbia restored this film to its 78 minute version.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) aired the recently restored version of this movie for the first time on Wednesday November 15, 2023.
"Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie on March 27, 1939 with Loretta Young, Spencer Tracy, and Arthur Hohl reprising their film roles.
Filmmaker Guy Maddin listed this as one of the 10 greatest films of all time on his ballot for the 2012 Sight and Sound polls.
