One of over 700 Paramount productions, filmed between 1929-49, which were sold to MCA/Universal in 1958 for television distribution, and have been owned and controlled by MCA ever since; seldom taken off the shelf due to its age and obscurity, its earliest documented telecast took place in Charlotte NC Saturday 10 December 1960 on WSOC (Channel 9).
The lead role was originally meant for Gary Cooper, who turned it down because he didn't like the script or the director Louis J. Gasnier. He was threatened with suspension by Paramount Pictures, but the studio eventually relented and the role was given to Neil Hamilton.
The press reported that Sammy Bricker got his part because fellow prop boy Ernest W. Johnson had already had a role in La via del male (1928).
The press reported that William Powell was going to begin work on the movie, which was to be directed by Josef von Sternberg.
