The opening shot of the film portrays the protagonist, Clare in Pre-Raphaelite paintings aesthetics, yet on a cross-like pose upside down, reminiscent of the martyrdom of Saint Peter; Peter was condemned to be crucified but because it had already been Jesus' martyrdom he asked to be crucified upside down.
The film was shot over the course of 15 days in Louisville, Kentucky and one additional day of photography in Los Angeles.
Zola Jesus who created the original score for the film was approached by the director Mitzi Peirone in the early stages of editing the picture; Zola Jesus whose real name is Nina Danilova said in an interview that her favorite horror film is Martyrs (2008).
