The show's "cops and robbers" theme is based on the Monkey Punch manga "Lupin III", about an adventurer thief (Arsene Lupin III) and the policeman who constantly chases him. The series homages the manga by naming the thief rangers Lupinrangers.
The first time in Super Sentai where we have two teams at the same time, and also the first to be a full series vs. story aside from the usual vs. team-ups of the current Sentai up against the previous team.
The Lupinrangers' names (Kairi, Tooma, Umika), when taken as an acronym, form the phrase "kaitou" (Kai-To-U), which means "thief."
