Lucky Review
Image
Horror has always been a genre that reflects its times. In the wake of #MeToo and an increased focus on the experiences and the prominence of women, both in the film industry and more generally, we have seen female writers and directors seek to fold those themes into genre cinema. Perhaps the most notable examples being the recent remakes of Black Christmas (directed by Sophia Takal) and The Craft (directed by Zoe Lister-Jones). With Lucky, writer/star Brea Grant and director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) aren’t reinterpreting one specific text through that lens, rather they’re filtering a whole subgenre: the slasher.

May (Grant) is a writer just finishing her book tour. One night, she wakes to see a masked man outside her house. When she wakes her husband Ted (Dhruv Uday Singh) he seems nonplussed, confusing May by telling her ‘that’s the guy who shows up every...

Watch the Official Trailer for Natasha Kermani’s Lucky Ahead of its March 4th Release on Shudder
Image
Following its well-received screenings at the virtual SXSW and Fantasia film festivals last year, Natasha Kermani's new movie Lucky is coming to Shudder on March 4th, and you can get an idea of what to expect in the official trailer.

We have additional details and the official trailer below, and go here to read Heather Wixson's review and Lindsay Traves' interviews with Kermani and writer/star Brea Grant.

"Life takes a sudden turn for May, a popular self-help book author, when she finds herself the target of a mysterious man with murderous intentions. Every night, without fail he comes after her, and every day the people around her barely seem to notice.

With no one to turn to, May is pushed to her limits and must take matters into her own hands to survive and to regain control of her life.

The sophomore feature from Iranian-American filmmaker Natasha...

Brea Grant in Surreal Home-Invasion Slasher 'Lucky' Official Trailer
"He keeps coming back... he should be dead!" Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Lucky, a surreal slasher home-invasion time loop horror from filmmaker Natasha Kermani. This originally premiered at the Fantasia + FrightFest Film Festivals last year, and stopped by Nightstream - read Zofia's review. A suburban woman named May, a popular self-help book author, fights to be believed as she finds herself stalked by a threatening figure who returns to her house night after night. When she can't get help from those around her, she is forced to take matters into her own hands. Described as "a uniquely nightmarish, darkly funny, and timely slasher, and a thrilling addition to the Final Girl genre." This stars Brea Grant, who also wrote the screenplay, along with Dhruv Uday Singh and Kausar Mohammed. This looks like a good flip on the slasher genre, with Grant kicking ass in the lead performance.

Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell in Good Trouble (2019)
Watch the Juicy New Trailer for Good Trouble Season 3
Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell in Good Trouble (2019)
It's time to face the music in Good Trouble season three.  The Freeform drama and Fosters spinoff returns in less than a month and E! News has an exclusive first look at the new trailer. As usual, there's a lot going on.  Season two of Good Trouble ended with a lot of relationships in the balance and the trailer gives some hints about what's to come, good and bad. Callie (Maia Mitchell) chose her morals and the Legal Aid tenants over her boyfriend Jamie (Beau Mirchoff), and in the trailer she tells Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) "it's over."  Mariana, having just hooked up with Evan (T.J. Linnard) after learning that her boyfriend Raj (Dhruv Uday Singh) might have slept...

‘Lucky,’ ‘Palm Springs,’ and Why Time Loop Movies Are Defining 2020
Early in Natasha Kermani’s surreal and sharply sardonic horror movie Lucky (which I saw at this year’s online-only Fantasia Film Festival), Brea Grant’s sovereign May awakens in the night to find a man outside her window, staring back at her. Petrified, May hisses at her husband Ted (Dhruv Uday Singh) to wake up, telling him there’s […]

How ‘Good Trouble’ Created a Trap Heals Activation in Season 2 Finale
Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell in Good Trouble (2019)
A young Latinx man hired to portray a bartender in the Season 2 finale of “Good Trouble” took his mark in the South Los Angeles warehouse in which the scene was taking place and looked up and across from him. There, projected onto the wall, was the face of an even younger man who was a close family friend before he was killed by police. It was an emotional moment, but it was also the epitome of the environment the team behind the show was trying to create.

“We’re trying to create environments where people feel into what is happening,” says Patrisse Cullors, co-founder, Black Lives Matter Global Network and co-writer of the “Good Trouble” finale episode entitled “Trap Heals.” “It’s not a protest space, it’s not necessarily an art gallery, but it does protest and it is fine art. It’s a mashup.”

The episode is named...

SXSW 2020 Announces More Feature Film Additions, Including Robust Midnight Slate and Sundance Hits
Midnighters (2017)
After unveiling its first lineup of feature film offerings last month, the SXSW Film Festival is rolling out more additions to its 2020 program. The annual Texas festival has already announced its features and episodic premieres, and now those picks are joined by Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, and Special Events, plus late-addition features and the full list of Episodic Pilot Competition shows.

This year’s program has 135 Feature Films, including 99 world premieres, nine North American premieres, five U.S. Premieres, 75 films from first-time filmmakers, and 119 short films. The lineup also features music videos, episodic premieres, pilots, special events, and Vr projects.

Midnighters (2017)
Emily Mortimer’s ‘Relic,’ Ella Balinska’s ‘Run Sweetheart Run’ Selected for SXSW Midnighter Section
Midnighters (2017)
The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.

This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.

“Programming the Midnighters section this year felt especially invigorating,” Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer, said. “The filmmaking teams, while particularly diverse, all seem to be using their films as a cathartic lens to view the modern-day world. One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...

Freeform Summit Unapologetically Leads The Charge When It Comes To Showcasing Representation On TV
Kenya Barris
From The Bold Type to Good Trouble to Shadowhunters to grown-ish, Freeform prides themselves with their slate of shows that put inclusion and representation of marginalized communities on full display — and the Freeform Summit unapologetically celebrated that on Wednesday night with a series of panels that not only showcased their series but the social issues in the real world that they reflect.

With so much talk about diversity, inclusion, and representation in Hollywood, it seems that there’s a lot of lip service but not many TV studios aren’t taking much action, and if they do, it’s not fully realized and lacks authenticity. Geared towards millennial audiences — or people who just seek change in the world — Freeform makes diversity, inclusion and representation more than just buzzwords. It puts its money where its mouth is.

The evening included four panels: “Young Adults Keep Ruining Everything”, “Be Whoever The Ff...
