One of the reasons that Lifetime films are so pleasurable is because they’re inherently familiar. The conflict typically centers around rich (often white) women whose lives are embroiled in adulterous and/or murderous affairs. There’s a plucky, overly supportive best friend; a cop who does nothing; and a therapist or red herring who gets killed to increase the stakes.

What makes Daddy’s Deadly Secret so pleasurable is that writer Leo McGuigan still employs many of the familiar hallmarks, but he packs the film so full that by the time the end credits roll, there’s been upwards of four or five reveals, instead of the more predictable one to two.

Directed by Sean Cisterna, Daddy’s Deadly Secret begins laying the foundation for its mystery early. The opening scene introduces married couple Richard (Steve Byers) and Caroline (Sarah Allen) as they discuss his estranged sister Darla, against whom he took out a restraining order.

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."

Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.

"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

A mother and her young son move to a new small town. They soon discover the town harbors a dark secret, and it’s a race against time to save the town.

There’s a certain quality to Richard Boddington‘s Wickensburg that feels so incredibly cheap despite having some admittedly fun ideas, even if they, too, can be a bit familiar. It’s a highly strange film for that reason. So much of this film on paper should’ve worked. It should’ve been a big ‘ol campy blast but instead, it’s just… kinda… bad.

It also doesn’t help that the film looks as if it was made on a high-school student’s budget. The lighting in nearly every scene looks poorly done, as does the overall cinematography.

Arthur Forrest, a television legend with a 75-year career that covered long-running hits such as “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “That’s Incredible!,” died on Oct. 25. He was 95.

Marcy Forrest, Arthur’s wife, confirmed the death to Variety.

Born in 1926 in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx as a first-generation American, Forrest completed his education at NYU and landed a job at DuMont Network’s studio as a janitor. After learning the business, Forrest went from janitor to page, from page to studio assistant, all the way up to the cameraman on “The Honeymooners” and “Captain Video.”

After leaving DuMont and working for New York’s Channel 5, Forrest directed the popular children’s show, “Wonderama,” and stayed at the station until 1973, when he left to direct the late night “Dick Cavett Show.”

For hockey legend Terry Sawchuk, playing goal in the National Hockey League was more of a calling or destiny than a vocation, or so the new biopic, aptly named Goalie, would have you believe. Indeed, it seems that from his humble beginnings in rural Winnipeg, to winning the Stanley Cup four times – three times with the Detroit Red Wings and once with the Toronto Maple Leafs – Sawchuk was constantly plagued by a troubled past as well as the numerous injuries sustained throughout his twenty-year career, during which he played for four of the Original Six teams, until dying after a drunken fight in 1970.

Every actor knows, you always say yes.

When a director asks, “Can you ride a horse?” Yes. “Bungee jump?” Yes. “Speak Mandarin?” Yes. You figure it out later.

So when Flatliners director Niels Arden Oplev asked Steve Byers if he could drive standard, well, that was an easy one. At some point in his life the Toronto actor had been behind the wheel of a standard vehicle.

Back in November, Sony Pictures made a numberof changes to their upcoming release schedule, including a shift of their Flatliners remake release date, pushing it from the summer slot of August 18 to September 29. As it turns out, there was a good reason for that shift, with director Niels Arden Oplev assembling his cast once again for reshoots, which will take place in Toronto next month. If the studio would have kept the old release date, it would have been cutting it too close for comfort.

Iatse 873, the local Toronto chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union, revealed on their website that Flatliners reshoots have been scheduled in Toronto for eight days, spanning July 24 to August 1. One of the consistent surprises about Alphas is the way it wades into conventional plots but sidesteps a predictable outcome. This week, SyFy’s promos had teased a Fight Club-like underground fighting ring that looked very similar to other shows. The first-season Sanctuary episode “Warriors” also showed individuals with extraordinary abilities battling in front of roaring crowds. The surprise with “Alpha Dogs” is that it doesn’t spend that much time in the arena. Bill gets his chance to battle some tough foes, but it plays out much differently than the anticipated formula. The fights are just one part of an episode that delves into Stanton Parrish’s background, brings a new living situation for Gary, and adds a possible love interest for Rachel. It’s an engaging...

Sony Pictures has unveiled a new poster for Total Recall, in honor of the sci-fi reboot's panel today at 4:35 Pm in Hall H. Much like the international poster that debuted earlier this week, this 1-sheet features Colin Farrell's Douglas Quaid, looming over Kate Beckinsale's Lori and Jessica Biel's Melina. This is great news. If you watched Syfy‘s Alphas during its inaugural season last summer, you likely enjoyed the treat that was Summer Glau in a terrific part, as an Alpha whose ability was to construct incredibly complex pieces of technology. It was a geeky part, and she played it with absolute style and grace.

Happily, Syfy has announced that she’ll be reprising that part for three episodes in the second season of the show, which premieres on Monday, July 23 at 10/9c. (Don’t worry, Lost Girl fans, your show is not going away, it’s just moving down the block to Fridays.)

Joining the lovely and talented Ms. Glau are a hobbit, a former NCIS director, and a lieutenant with the colonial forces, amongst others. Check out this great lineup:

The original "Alphas" have some competition: A slew of new guest stars are headed to the Syfy series.

With numerous TV and film credits under their belts, Sean Austin ("Lord of the Rings"), Thomas Howell ("Southland"), Lauren Holly ("NCIS"), Steve Byers ("Immortals," "Total Recall"), Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica") and Noah Reid ("Rookie Blue") are all set to appear on Season 2 (premiering Mon., July 23 at 10 p.m. Et) of the supernatural show.

Season 1 guest stars are also making a comeback. John Pyper-Ferguson will be back as Stanton Parish, Kathleen Munroe as Dani Rosen, Mahershala Ali as Agent Nathan Cley and Summer Glau will return for a three episode arc as Skylar Adams.

Starring David Strathairn, Malika Yoba, Warren Christie and more, "Alphas" centers on a group of people with supernatural abilities who work to to prevent and solve crimes committed by other Alphas.

"Alphas" returns on Mon., July 23 at 10 p.m.

The good folks at Syfy want to remind us about the upcoming second season premiere of Alphas -- on Monday, July 23rd. Syfy ordered 13 episodes of Alphas for season two. They're expected to run through October but Syfy has only officially scheduled the first six episodes thus far.

The word "remake" has developed more of a negative connotation among movie goers lately, with many fans desperately wanting more originality coming from the Hollywood system. Honestly, when I first heard of the Total Recall remake happening, I was quite skeptical (at best), since I loved the innovative original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a dude who doesn't fully know who he really is. Last August, I was invited up to the Toronto set of this new sci-fi tale, where all of my fears and doubts were promptly put to rest after speaking with all of the key players involved.

First of all, there will be several aspects of the original that remain intact, like Douglas Quaid's (Colin Farrell) identity issues and Rekall, but this remake is set in a completely different world altogether.
