Fans have been clamoring for a Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter crossover for decades. While that still isn’t happening, we now have something almost as strange: an actor who exists in both universes. Thai-Australian actress Mel Jarnson, who played the vampire-like Nitara in 2021’s Mortal Kombat, is trading wings for camo as Cammy in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot. She’s officially the first actress to appear in both franchises, which is probably the closest we’ll ever get to the two worlds meeting. And there’s some delicious timing here too. After delays, Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to release in 2026, the same year Street Fighter arrives in theaters.

Van Damme is a Belgian actor who is best known for action movies after his breakout role in the 1988 martial arts movie Bloodsport, which grossed $50 million against its scant reported budget of roughly $2 million.

Other Jean-Claude Van Damme movies have become even bigger hits since then. Compared to science fiction franchises like "Alien," "Star Trek," "Godzilla," "Star Wars," or even "Independence Day," the universe of "Stargate" has yet to make contact with the modern age of entertainment. While some of us are still discovering the original 1994 James Spader film for the first time, neither it nor its spin-off TV series has enjoyed the enduring cultural relevance they may have once seemed capable of. When the Syfy channel canceled "Stargate Atlantis" in 2009, citing the mounting economic crisis and soaring production costs as factors, there was some hope -- like there once was for the mothership series "Stargate Sg-1" -- that "Stargate" would live on through sequel films.

WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes will play Guile in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot, and we now have our first shadowy glimpse (via GameFragger.com) at the current Undisputed WWE Champion as the iconic video game character.

The American Nightmare was recently written off television for a few weeks after being attacked by Drew McIntyre on SmackDown. That's allowed Rhodes to shoot his role in the movie, and this behind-the-scenes photo confirms he'll be rocking Guile's iconic haircut.

It's not a particularly realistic hairstyle, but props to this movie for embracing what we've seen in this video game franchise over nearly four decades. As for Rhodes, he may be best known for his in-ring work, but the fan-favourite former Aew star also has his fair share of acting experience after appearing in Arrow, Warehouse 13, and The Naked Gun.

Filming is currently underway on the live-action adaptation despite the project being indefinitely delayed by Sony Pictures after previously promising a 2026 theatrical release. That almost never existed entirely when an over-bloated budget and schedule brought a first time director and production to the brink. Legend is setting the stage for an adrenaline-heavy September with a run of fifteen channel premieres, featuring some of the biggest names in action, thrillers and cult favourites. Spanning martial arts showdowns, apocalyptic battles, high-stakes crime capers and historical epics, the line-up promises an unrelenting month of cinematic spectacle.

Opening the month on 4 September is Kickboxer (1989), the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic in which vengeance meets Muay Thai discipline. Two days later, Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale face winged devastation in Reign of Fire (2002), a post-apocalyptic dragon thriller. Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones bring swashbuckling flair to The Mask of Zorro (1998) on 7 September.

Sam Worthington takes desperate measures in Man on a Ledge (2011) on 9 September, while Nicolas Cage goes pedal-to-the-metal in supernatural revenge ride Drive Angry (2010) on 11 September. Sylvester Stallone’s uncompromising Rambo (2008) storms in on 13 September, followed by Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie in serial killer pursuit drama The Bone Collector (1999) on 14 September.

Filmmaker James Cullen Bressack’s found footage Fantastic Fest title The Workout has found a theatrical home.

The Workout will arrive in limited release Aug. 27 via Anchor Bay Entertainment, followed by VOD (through Insurgence) and Blu-ray on Oct. 28 via Anchor Bay.

According to the logline, The Workout “chronicles Army Ranger Wyatt Park (Peter Jae) and his pregnant wife Becca (Galadriel Stineman) as they film a workout video in their private gym that becomes violently interrupted by a mob hit. Becca is killed, but their unborn child is miraculously saved. Grief-stricken and enraged, Wyatt and his brother-in-law Levi (Josh Kelly) launch a merciless mission of vengeance, documenting every moment for the child to one day understand what happened.”

The cast also includes Ashlee Evans-Smith, Kristos Andrews, Augie Duke, The Workout co-writer David Josh Lawrence and Bj Hendricks, who co-executive produced the feature.

One of the more infamous behind-the-scenes Hollywood tales of the 1980s is the fact that Jean-Claude Van Damme nearly starred as the titular character in John McTiernan’s Predator. Indeed, the future Muscles from Brussels, who at the time was totally unknown, having only appeared as the villain in No Retreat, No Surrender. It was poised to be his Hollywood debut. However, Van Damme was only on set for two days, and according to the book Last Action Heroes by Nick De Semlyen (buy it here), his departure might have had something to do with the fact that he’d be completely covered up for the entire film in a costume.

According to co-screenwriter Jim Thomas, “I think he was under the impression that he was going to be the hero,” adding, “and then he kind of erupted when they asked him to get into the suit. It was disastrous.

But, while his contemporary, Steven Seagal, became something of a parody of himself, Jcvd got clean and doubled down on his craft, emerging as a surprisingly potent actor in some Dtv movies that are way better than anyone gives them credit for.

The nineties was the heyday of the mid-level action hero. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal churned out a whole series of increasingly profitable action programmers in the early part of the decade. Seagal’s movies were wildly profitable for Warner Bros, while Van Damme had a home at Universal Pictures. Every studio wanted its own Jcvd or Seagal, with Paramount trying to launch Jeff Speakman with The Perfect Weapon (which has a devoted fan in our own writer Ej Tangonan) and Fox even trying with football player Howie Long in Firestorm. One studio that badly wanted their own action guy was New Line Cinema, but before they found their niche in the genre with Rumble in the Bronx and Mortal Kombat, they tried to launch two promising action heroes. One was Thomas Ian Griffith, whose (pretty awesome) action flick Excessive Force was only given a small regional release.

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. August 2’s Actorle felt like a throwback to the 90s, because that’s when the mystery actor for the day peaked the most. His filmography, which began back in 1986, helped me narrow it down to an action star, and it was not long before I figured it out.

John Wick: Chapter 4 star Scott Adkins continues to cement himself as the best-kept secret in action movies, with the actor now combining martial arts spectacle with the drama of war in the first trailer for his upcoming action thriller, Prisoner of War. The movie was picked up for distribution by Well Go USA at the end of last year, with Prisoner of War now all set to land on VOD on September 19, 2025, in the United States. Just like in regular jobs, actors get fired from major Hollywood movies for all sorts of reasons, be they "creative differences" with the director or because they weren't quite right for a role after all. Often, we can look back at these decisions with the benefit of hindsight and think, "Yeah, that was definitely the right choice." Take two high-profile cases from the '80s. "Back to the Future" may well have been a hit even with Eric Stoltz playing Marty McFly, but it would've lacked the breezy comic energy that Michael J. Fox brought as his replacement; and the alien hunter in "Predator" certainly wouldn't have been as terrifying with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the suit instead of the towering Kevin Peter Hall, despite the physical prowess of the relatively diminutive Belgian. Before Dwayne Johnson and John Cena found their way from the WWE ring to the big screen, Terry Bollea aka Hulk Hogan provided a case study in how wrestling stars could become movie stars. Hogan was a ubiquitous presence in movie theaters — and on TV screens — during the height of his fame in the 1980s and 1990s. He died at his home in Clearwater, Fl on July 24 at age 71.

In his later years, Hogan was better known as a reality TV star, headlining the two-season VH1 series Hogan Knows Best and appearing on its one-and-done follow-up, Brooke Knows Best. He also had cameos on comedy series ranging from The Inbetweeners to The Goldbergs.

It's an impressive number, especially given that it ranks as the best ever for a red-band trailer.

The performance from the sequel's red-band trailer continues a trend for the franchise that began with the 2021 reboot. The Lewis Tan-led film also impressed with its red-band trailer, following the previous McQuoid movie's record-breaking success, which cleared 116 million views in its first week and outperformed Logan and Deadpool 2.

Mortal Kombat 2 is finally set to introduce Johnny Cage, but Karl Urban suggests that his character will be a little different from what audiences are used to seeing. Due to arrive in theaters on October 24, the latest adaptation of the hit video game franchise is poised to introduce several iconic franchise characters absent from 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot.

Speaking with IGN, Urban revealed that when audiences first meet his version of the Mortal Kombat fighter Johnny Cage, he will be missing much of the brashness and “spark” that fans of the franchise are used to. Mortal Kombat 2 is heading to theaters this year, but fans are still waiting for an official trailer. While the trailer for the film itself isn't dropping until July 17, an early teaser has been released, showcasing newcomer Karl Urban in his role as the fan-favorite fighter Johnny Cage.

The new teaser is a fake trailer for Uncaged Fury, a fictional farm starring Johnny Cage. Reminiscent of action hits of the 1990s, the faux trailer might spark memories of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal films of the era. It's safe to say that Gerard Butler has easily established himself as one of the great action stars of this generation. Following yesterday's news that David Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Legendary's live-action video game adaptation as the villainous M. Bison, we're hearing that another key role may have been filled, with Nexus Point News reporting that Cody Rhodes is now in talks to play Guile.

Known for his signature flat-top haircut and Sonic Boom projectile, William Guile debuted as one of the original eight World Warriors in 1991's Street Fighter II. The tough, no-nonsense US Air Force Colonel made it his mission to take down Bison and his Shadaloo criminal empire following the death of his friend, Charlie Nash.

Guile was played by Jean-Claude Van Damme in the '90s movie.

Deadline (via GameFragger.com) has revealed that David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad) has joined the cast of Legendary Entertainment's live-action Street Fighter movie as its lead villain, M. Bison. 

The actor has become a mainstay across film and television thanks to memorable supporting turns, but this will mark his biggest role to date. Dastmalchian was most recently seen in The Life of Chuck and received widespread praise for his work in Late Night with the Devil. 

Comic book fans will know him best for playing Kurt in the Ant-Man franchise and as Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad. He's also voiced multiple DC characters, including Calendar Man and The Penguin, and played Abra Kadabra in The Flash.

Next up for Dastmalchian is Dexter: Resurrection and season 2 of Netflix's hit series One Piece, where he'll play the evil Mr. 3.

Back to M. Bison, he's the primary antagonist in the Street Fighter video game series.
