Fans have been clamoring for a Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter crossover for decades. While that still isn’t happening, we now have something almost as strange: an actor who exists in both universes. Thai-Australian actress Mel Jarnson, who played the vampire-like Nitara in 2021’s Mortal Kombat, is trading wings for camo as Cammy in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot. She’s officially the first actress to appear in both franchises, which is probably the closest we’ll ever get to the two worlds meeting. And there’s some delicious timing here too. After delays, Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to release in 2026, the same year Street Fighter arrives in theaters.

Fans have been waiting decades for a new live-action ‘Street Fighter’ adaptation since the 1994 camp cult classic, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raúl Juliá, Kylie Minogue, and Ming-Na Wen. Now, after more than two years in development, a new film is finally in the works.
The plot of the film is set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s Game Over!

The death of Mike De Leon marked the passing of one of the most influential voices in Philippine cinema. A director whose films navigated political turmoil, family dysfunction, and the fragile state of democracy, De Leon left behind a body of work that remains essential to understanding Filipino identity on screen. Whether tackling the horrors of authoritarianism or the intimate tragedies of everyday life, his films consistently fused sharp social critique with masterful cinematic form. Below are 5 of his greatest works, listed in chronological order.

Back in the day, you were either a Street Fighter kid or a Mortal Kombat kid. Both had their pros and cons, but you had to choose one. I mean, your parents weren’t going to shell out good money for both, right? Well, parents who actually loved their kids did. Thanks for nothing, Dad. Since I had to choose, I went with Street Fighter. The moves seemed more straightforward to do, and my mom had less of a heart attack about the cartoony violence than the bloody gore that Mortal Kombat provided. The games after Street Fighter II were plentiful, even if the movies were not great. With a new film on the horizon,...

There’s an urban legend about Jean-Claude Van Damme that’s been floating around for years. The story goes that Jcvd was working as a waiter when Cannon Films head Menahem Golan walked in. To impress him, Van Damme supposedly threw a roundhouse kick an inch from his face, wowed him on the spot, and walked away with a movie contract—leading to Bloodsport.
It didn’t quite happen that way. Van Damme’s rise to fame—the “Muscles from Brussels” story—was much slower and included an unexpected detour through one of the biggest action movies of the ’80s: Predator.

If Béla Tarr made Abigail’s Party if might look something like this, an elevated cringe comedy that marks a return, of sorts, to the kind of portmanteau movie Jim Jarmusch made in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The theme is very simple — family — but there are other overlaps too, with jokes that recur, like various iterations of the British phrase “Bob’s your uncle”, which clearly tickled Jarmusch somewhere on his travels. It’s slight for sure, and true to his word in Cannes 2023 it does make his last film, Paterson, look like a Jean Claude Van Damme action film, but it’s good to see that he’s moved away from his not very productive period spent fruitlessly trying to re-energize stale horror tropes.

An underseen remake of a Jean-Claude Van Damme thriller has found new life on Netflix. Van Damme is a Belgian actor who is best known for action movies after his breakout role in the 1988 martial arts movie Bloodsport, which grossed $50 million against its scant reported budget of roughly $2 million.
Other Jean-Claude Van Damme movies have become even bigger hits since then. This includes Street Fighter ($99.4 million), Maximum Risk ($51.7 million), Timecop ($102 million), The Expendables 2 ($312 million), Kung Fu Panda 2 ($664.8 million), Minions: The Rise of Gru ($937.7 million), and a 1995 movie that got a recent remake.

Noah Centineo, who starred in Dceu’s Black Adam, shocked fans after posting a shirtless photo online. Revealing a stunning body transformation, this change appears to have fans concerned and in awe, raising the question of whether he’s on steroids or not.
Signs of steroid use typically exist if muscle growth and bulking happen in a short amount of time, with some changes in facial structure as well. There is a chance that he has used performance enhancers while filming for his current movie, Street Fighter, which features very bulky characters. All this is mere speculation as Centineo himself has not commented on this sudden transformation.

Compared to science fiction franchises like "Alien," "Star Trek," "Godzilla," "Star Wars," or even "Independence Day," the universe of "Stargate" has yet to make contact with the modern age of entertainment. While some of us are still discovering the original 1994 James Spader film for the first time, neither it nor its spin-off TV series has enjoyed the enduring cultural relevance they may have once seemed capable of. When the Syfy channel canceled "Stargate Atlantis" in 2009, citing the mounting economic crisis and soaring production costs as factors, there was some hope -- like there once was for the mothership series "Stargate Sg-1" -- that "Stargate" would live on through sequel films.
This didn't turn out to be the case. While "Stargate Atlantis" was not the final "Stargate" project produced, its cancellation did mark the beginning of the end for the franchise. It's a real shame, not least of all because "Atlantis...

WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes will play Guile in the upcoming Street Fighter reboot, and we now have our first shadowy glimpse (via GameFragger.com) at the current Undisputed WWE Champion as the iconic video game character.
The American Nightmare was recently written off television for a few weeks after being attacked by Drew McIntyre on SmackDown. That's allowed Rhodes to shoot his role in the movie, and this behind-the-scenes photo confirms he'll be rocking Guile's iconic haircut.
It's not a particularly realistic hairstyle, but props to this movie for embracing what we've seen in this video game franchise over nearly four decades. As for Rhodes, he may be best known for his in-ring work, but the fan-favourite former Aew star also has his fair share of acting experience after appearing in Arrow, Warehouse 13, and The Naked Gun.

Funnily enough, although the 1994 Street Fighter movie would sport some pretty iconic character designs like Blanka’s green skin and orange hair or M. Bison’s full red leather suit with cape, it was still grounded in most areas and even Colonel Guile’s signature wide flat top was downgraded to Van Damme sort of spiking up his hair. It still made sense, and it’s hard to find purists who specifically demanded Guile’s hair to resemble the source material, but the upcoming Street Fighter adaptation looks to be a whole new ballgame.

What if I told you a future existed with no crime and plenty of Taco Bell? But also no sex, red meat, alcohol, cursing, nicotine, or… toilet paper? Today’s video is about the outlandish story of Demolition Man: a movie that almost featured a Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal throwdown that would have broken the fabric of space and time. That almost never existed entirely when an over-bloated budget and schedule brought a first time director and production to the brink. Finally, a movie that survived all that and managed to 30 years later become an often quoted tale of Utopian caution that draws frightening and hilarious parallels to the events of the world we live in today. But still features a lot of ass kicking and future-guns. Of course. Sometimes you have to send a maniac to catch one! This is the story of what happened to Demolition Man.

One of the more infamous behind-the-scenes Hollywood tales of the 1980s is the fact that Jean-Claude Van Damme nearly starred as the titular character in John McTiernan’s Predator. Indeed, the future Muscles from Brussels, who at the time was totally unknown, having only appeared as the villain in No Retreat, No Surrender. It was poised to be his Hollywood debut. However, Van Damme was only on set for two days, and according to the book Last Action Heroes by Nick De Semlyen (buy it here), his departure might have had something to do with the fact that he’d be completely covered up for the entire film in a costume.
According to co-screenwriter Jim Thomas, “I think he was under the impression that he was going to be the hero,” adding, “and then he kind of erupted when they asked him to get into the suit. It was disastrous.

Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Muscles from Brussels. If you grew up in the early nineties, this handsome Belgian was everywhere. With his unique accent, good looks, and a butt he was all but too happy to show off at least once a film, he was the rare action star that was just as popular with the ladies as the dudes. Changing tastes in the mid-nineties meant that his career as a viable lead in theatrical films started to dry up, which wasn’t helped by some off-screen issues he had with drugs (a Hollywood tale as old as time). But, while his contemporary, Steven Seagal, became something of a parody of himself, Jcvd got clean and doubled down on his craft, emerging as a surprisingly potent actor in some Dtv movies that are way better than anyone gives them credit for.

The nineties was the heyday of the mid-level action hero. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal churned out a whole series of increasingly profitable action programmers in the early part of the decade. Seagal’s movies were wildly profitable for Warner Bros, while Van Damme had a home at Universal Pictures. Every studio wanted its own Jcvd or Seagal, with Paramount trying to launch Jeff Speakman with The Perfect Weapon (which has a devoted fan in our own writer Ej Tangonan) and Fox even trying with football player Howie Long in Firestorm. One studio that badly wanted their own action guy was New Line Cinema, but before they found their niche in the genre with Rumble in the Bronx and Mortal Kombat, they tried to launch two promising action heroes. One was Thomas Ian Griffith, whose (pretty awesome) action flick Excessive Force was only given a small regional release.

But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Just like in regular jobs, actors get fired from major Hollywood movies for all sorts of reasons, be they "creative differences" with the director or because they weren't quite right for a role after all. Often, we can look back at these decisions with the benefit of hindsight and think, "Yeah, that was definitely the right choice." Take two high-profile cases from the '80s. "Back to the Future" may well have been a hit even with Eric Stoltz playing Marty McFly, but it would've lacked the breezy comic energy that Michael J. Fox brought as his replacement; and the alien hunter in "Predator" certainly wouldn't have been as terrifying with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the suit instead of the towering Kevin Peter Hall, despite the physical prowess of the relatively diminutive Belgian. On the flip side, we all have actors who we think should have been given their marching orders,...

Ahead of the premiere, Deadline reports the latest trailer for the Simon McQuoid sequel has picked up 106.8M worldwide views in its first 24 hours after being dropped on Thursday, July 17. It's an impressive number, especially given that it ranks as the best ever for a red-band trailer.
The performance from the sequel's red-band trailer continues a trend for the franchise that began with the 2021 reboot. The Lewis Tan-led film also impressed with its red-band trailer, following the previous McQuoid movie's record-breaking success, which cleared 116 million views in its first week and outperformed Logan and Deadpool 2.

Mortal Kombat 2 is one of the most anticipated movies of the 2025 calendar as audiences get a sequel to the 2021 reboot, Mortal Kombat. One of the criticisms leveled against the 2021 film was the absence of the titular Mortal Kombat tournament. However, the sequel, which premieres on October 24, will be handling that problem efficiently. As teased in the recently released trailer for the film, the stage is set for a showdown between Earthrealm and Outworld, as their best fighters face off. Joining the ranks of Earthrealm fighters will be Hollywood star-turned-hero Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
Cage was one of the glaring omissions from the 2021 reboot, and now, audiences get to see the Jean-Claude Van Damme-inspired hero taking on the fiercest of foes. Looking ahead to his character’s introduction, Urban reveals that his character will be a little different from what audiences are used to seeing. Speaking in an interview with IGN,...

When I turned 15, I developed a sudden compulsion to watch every 1980s and '90s action movie I could get my hands on -- not just the "Rambo" and "Terminator" films or the "RoboCop" and "Predator" movies, but also "Die Hard," "Commando," "TimeCop," and even "Cobra." The campier, the better. So, you can imagine what a delight it was to learn that the stars of all these ridiculous classics were joining forces for a throwback action flick in 2010.
I loved "The Expendables" then, and I love "The Expendables" now, but let's be honest; The franchise has been bad as often as it's been good. And even when it's good, it's that roll-your-eyes-and-laugh kind of good. Daring? Certainly. It takes a certain brazenness to throw Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Chuck Norris into a blender so many years...

Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso is a love letter to leadership, personal growth, and obviously, football. The show follows Jason Sudeikis’s Ted Lasso as he goes through life’s ups and downs while trying to coach a fictional Premier League football club called AFC Richmond. The players all have their different personalities, and the relationships between them keep evolving throughout the seasons.
While Ted Lasso is mainly about the titular coach’s unconventional coaching style, these players and their journeys from underdogs and losers to heroes are the backbone of the show. Over three seasons, AFC Richmond’s roster has featured rising stars, seasoned veterans, and benchwarmers. In this ranking list, we will take into account their character development, narrative impact, and maybe also how many goals they have scored.

Mortal Kombat 2 is finally set to introduce Johnny Cage, but Karl Urban suggests that his character will be a little different from what audiences are used to seeing. Due to arrive in theaters on October 24, the latest adaptation of the hit video game franchise is poised to introduce several iconic franchise characters absent from 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot.
Speaking with IGN, Urban revealed that when audiences first meet his version of the Mortal Kombat fighter Johnny Cage, he will be missing much of the brashness and “spark” that fans of the franchise are used to. Instead, viewers will find the former Hollywood action star at a low point in his career. Check out his comments below:
When we first discover Johnny, he is sort of lacking a lot of that quintessential spark that I think fans of the game will know.
We start him at a very low point.

It's time to test your might. The new red band trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 has finally been released with the sequel coming to theaters after a four-year wait.
The trailer has a heavy focus on Karl Urban's Johnny Cage, putting the fan-favorite character front and center after his absence in the previous film. Also on display are other newcomers and returning stars, who bring Johnny up to speed on the deadly "Mortal Kombat" tournament. Of course, that means that there will be plenty of fatalities, and a glimpse at some of the bloody carnage can also be seen in the trailer. Check out the new red band trailer below.
Given his popularity with fans, the absence of Johnny Cage in the 2021 film was one qualm that critics had. The sequel looks to be making up for that by putting Johnny in the spotlight. Co-star Lewis Tan, who returns...

Now, the first trailer has finally been unveiled, teasing the bloody interdimensional martial arts clash ahead.

Mortal Kombat 2 is heading to theaters this year, but fans are still waiting for an official trailer. While the trailer for the film itself isn't dropping until July 17, an early teaser has been released, showcasing newcomer Karl Urban in his role as the fan-favorite fighter Johnny Cage.
The new teaser is a fake trailer for Uncaged Fury, a fictional farm starring Johnny Cage. Reminiscent of action hits of the 1990s, the faux trailer might spark memories of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal films of the era. The video also touches on Cage's other films, touting how the actor has also starred in Cool Hand Cage, Hard to Cage, and Rebel Without a Cage. Check out the teaser below, per IGN.

Although Mortal Kombat II isn't getting its first official trailer until tomorrow, Warner Bros. is hyping up viewers with a very different teaser for one of its stars' upcoming blockbusters. From New Line Cinema, the studio behind the very real smash hits Cool Hand Cage, Hard to Cage, and Rebel Without a Cage, comes the movie everyone has really been waiting for — Uncaged Fury, the latest revolutionary action flick from the Jean-Claude Van Damme-inspired icon, Johnny Cage. The video is just a taste of the high-octane martial arts that Karl Urban's Hollywood superstar is bringing to the table, filled with daring fight scenes, cool shades, and not enough guys to bring down the Cage. Just remember not to touch the sunglasses. Best of all, this can't-miss epic is coming to theaters this October when the video game adaptation sequel hits the big screen.

Legendary Entertainment's anticipatedStreet Fighterlive-action film is continuing to assemble its group of fighters. Indian action star Vidyut Jammwal is the latest addition to the film, set to portray the iconic Dhalsim, the limb-stretching yoga master from India. For Jammwal, this marks a significant milestone: his Hollywood debut. He is a well-known actor in India, recognized for his action roles and expertise in martial arts and has starred in numerous films in India, including the popular Commando and Khuda Haafiz franchises. Deadline, which broke the news of Jammwal's involvement, says the actor "has been deliberate about the project with which he wants to introduce himself in the U.S. market."
Dhalsim is one of Street Fighter's most recognizable characters. He was introduced in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior in 1991, and quickly became a fan favorite for his unique fighting style (which includes stretching his limbs to impossible lengths...

The cast of the Street Fighter movie continues to come together as Deadline reports that Vidyut Jammwal has signed on to play Dhalsim. The character, who first appeared in Street Fighter II, is a yogi who can stretch his limbs and use fire-based attacks. He’s also a pacifist who only joins the tournament in order to raise money for his family and village.
Street Fighter has been filling out its ranks rather furiously, with the cast currently consisting of Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Everyone's got to start somewhere, and that somewhere ain't necessarily got to be pretty. Take Tom Cruise, for example. He made his film acting debut in Franco Zeffirelli's teen romance "Endless Love," an avalanche of ick notable for its Diana Ross/Lionel Richie theme song and notorious for the scene where Shirley Knight's bohemian mother watches approvingly from the top of a staircase as her 15-year-old daughter (Brooke Shields) has firelit sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend (Martin Hewitt). Somehow, Cruise survived this association with one of the most atrociously awful movies of the 1980s to become one of the world's biggest movie stars.
On the less scandalous end of the spectrum, Paul Newman's first movie was the biblical epic "The Silver Chalice," for which he received mostly lousy reviews. Jessica Lange was ridiculed for conjuring the ghost of Carole Lombard to play a daffy starlet in the 1976 remake of "King Kong.

Ever since the resurgence of WWE under the leadership of Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, professional wrestling has become cool again. So, it is no wonder that professional wrestlers have seen a surge in popularity across the globe, to the point that mainstream media could not get enough of them.
While personalities like Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson, Dave Bautista, and now, John Cena have seen tremendous success in shows and films alike in recent years thanks to their wrestling careers, there was a time when pro wrestling ruled the world of television.
Back in the golden days of the 90s and early 2000s, the scene was even more passionate and widespread amongst the common populace. Thus, there were many wrestlers who wanted to cash in on their fame and recognition and transition to mainstream television. Unfortunately, these 8 pro wrestlers couldn’t make it in the big leagues as they did in the squared circle.

Where Marvel’s Blade has faltered, its costumes found a second life in another period horror: Ryan Coogler’s vampire hit, Sinners.
One of 2025’s most acclaimed genre hits, Sinners was such a hit that even its own studio seemed taken by surprise. But in a fascinating glimpse behind the creative curtain, producer Sev Ohanian recently revealed that Ryan Coogler’s horror has a previously hidden connection to another toothsome production: Marvel’s Blade.
You may recall that Marvel has spent over five years trying to reboot the Blade franchise, with Oscar winner (and Jurassic World Rebirth star) Mahershala Ali in the titular vampire hunter role. One iteration of the troubled production, headed up by director Bassim Tariq, was a period piece set in the 1920s – this was likely around the year 2022 or 2023. We tend to think that the movies of the 1980s are constantly mined for franchises. Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Rambo, Terminator -- so many iconic cinematic characters and brands that continue to this day originated in the Reagan era. For every great movie that got a sequel, though, many more didn't, even though they were wonderfully entertaining, and in many cases, they left plenty of room for more.
It's likely you've heard of some of the entries on this list, and a handful of them did well enough at the box office to justify more but never got it together. Others were adapting material that already had further installments, but they just couldn't make enough at the box office to justify the rest. Decades later, some still await sequels supposedly in development, and even if others on this list were not originally wellreceived, they have been re-appraised over time and...

It's safe to say that Gerard Butler has easily established himself as one of the great action stars of this generation. From Olympus Has Fallen and its many sequels, to Plane and the Den of Thieves franchise, Butler is everywhere these days, much to the chagrin of critics who haven't been very kind to the actor's efforts. Case in point: Butler's 2023 action thriller Kandahar, which, despite being called things like "mindless" and "predictable," continues to be a streaming hit on Tubi.
Debuting on the free streaming service last month, Kandahar quickly became a smash, storming its way to the top of the charts. The Street Fighter movie just landed another heavy-hitter — literally —i n the shape of one of WWE's biggest stars. As first reported by Nexus Point News and now confirmed by Deadline, Cody Rhodes, 40, has offically signed on to take on the role of Guile in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming live-action Street Fighter reboot. The fan-favourite colonel with the unforgettable flat-top haircut is officially back — and this time, he’s bringing the Cross Rhodes with him.
Guile, introduced in Street Fighter II back in 1991, has become one of the most iconic characters in Capcom’s long-running franchise. Per Nexus Point News, it's been reported that Cody Rhodes is in talks to play Guile in the Street Fighter reboot. If the casting goes through, Rhodes would become the first person to play Guile in an official live-action adaptation since Jean-Claude Van Damme in the 1994 film.
