One of 2023’s most unexpected but welcome surprises was the return of Alexander Payne. A festival (and Academy Awards) favorite throughout the 2000s, Payne was almost immediately established as a filmmaker with a superior command over the medium. Even his earliest films exude confidence through their effortless style and careful characterizations of middle-class middle-Americans going through life’s vicissitudes. They connected with audiences in a big way: there are no fights, guns, or explosions in mature human dramas like “Sideways,” “About Schmidt,” or “The Descendants,” but they all made over $100 million at the box office.
In today’s media landscape, such success seems unthinkable for films that are so purposefully lowkey. Still, by pulling on the star power of George Clooney and Jack Nicholson and buzz from festivals like Sundance, Payne was able to create an admirable body of work that had both commercial and critical appeal.

There’s a vast world of horror beyond movies out there, especially in the literary space. So much so that novels frequently inspire new horror adaptations, whether brand new publications or enduring horror lit classics.
In a year that’s already delivered an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey and Adam Cesare‘s YA slasher novel Clown in a Cornfield, there’s still plenty more on the way.
Here are seven upcoming adaptations of horror novels that we can’t wait to check out.
The Long Walk – September 12
The first Stephen King adaptation arriving in the back half of 2025 is a doozy based on King’s 1979 novel of the same name. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) directs from a script by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). The R-rated film centers on a grim annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

Only Murders in the Building has dropped its first trailer for season 5, which shows the roles for its whopping eight guest stars!
Only Murders in the Building has become one of Hulu’s biggest original hits. It’s partly thanks to the great mix of mystery and comedy, as viewers love seeing the heroes solving crimes in a posh New York apartment building. It also works for the fantastic chemistry of leads Steve Martin (actor Charles), Martin Short (egotistical Broadway producer Oliver), and Selena Gomez (quirky artist Mabel).
Each season also boasts a bevy of amazing guest stars, most only around for one season, while others do return. That includes iconic Oscar-winner Meryl Streep as Oliver's girlfriend, Loretta Dunkin and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as the trio’s police detective aide Donna Willis.
Season 5 is no different as the trailer shows the peeks at the year’s mystery and who the major guest stars play!

It’s a miracle anyone ever sleeps in the Arconia, given that bodies are consistently piling up on the premises. Thankfully, the sleuthy trio, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short), are on the case. Sadly, the victim of this season’s whodunit is the Arconia’s beloved doorman, Lester. Who would dare hurt this kind man? We ask ourselves the same question while watching Hulu‘s trailer for Only Murders in the Building Season 5.

Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are on the trail of the killer who murdered the Arconia's longtime doorman in the new season of the Hulu mystery comedy. The new season will premiere on September 9. In the new trailer, the police have determined the death of doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca), whose body was discovered in last season's finale, to be an accident. Naturally, Charles Haden-Savage (Martin), Oliver Putnam (Short), and Mabel Mora (Gomez) aren't buying it, and soon another investigation is in full swing...as is another season of their podcast.
This time, the investigation draws in a mobster (Bobby Cannavale) and his extended family, three of the richest people on Earth, and the wife (Téa Leoni) of a missing businessman, the latter of whom hooks up with Charles,...

The Arconia’s favorite true crime podcasting trio is back for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 5.
After their Hollywood-themed adventure last season solving the murder of Sazz Pataki, Charles-Haden Savage, Mabel Mora and Oliver Putnam celebrated the latter’s marriage to Loretta Durkin. But just as all seemed well, yet another victim was murdered: the Arconia’s doorman, Lester.
Tuesday’s trailer teases as Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short’s characters must solve one of their most personal murders yet. “Something’s not adding up. We found three of the richest people in the world sniffing around a murder scene,” Mabel narrates.
“After their beloved doorman, Lester, dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles, Oliver and Mabel refuse to believe it was an accident. The trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires and school mobsters,” per the Hulu logline.

The death magnet that is the Arconia building in New York has claimed another victim in the trailer for Only Murders in the Building’s fifth season.
The trailer (watch it below) finds true-crime aficionados Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) digging into the death of the building’s doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca) — and acknowledging, as Charles does in the trailer, that the Arconia is “the most murderous building in New York.” Michael Cyril Creighton, Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Nathan Lane and Richard Kind reprise their roles from previous seasons.
Hulu describes season five of Only Murders this way: “After Lester dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel refuse to believe it was an accident. Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building is set to premiere its fifth season September 9, and the comedy’s first official trailer is setting up fans for hilarious chaos.
As a brief refresher, in the Season 4 finale, a new dead victim was revealed: doorman Lester Coluca (Teddy Coluca), a character that had been part of the story since day one. Poor Lester was found deceased in a water fountain just outside the Arconia by the unluckiest trio, Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Arconia residents who have a knack for getting caught up in murder mysteries.
In the trailer and back in the present day, a police report says Lester’s death was accidental. However, Charles, Oliver and Mabel know better, so they question everything. They’ve helped investigate four murders thus far, of course, all of which were covered extensively on their...

A battle between two Marvel Cinematic Universe stars to be the best Frankenstein is now coming. Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel, which follows the titular scientist Victor Frankenstein who assembles a sentient being by piecing together various human body parts, has been adapted to the screen countless times over the years, starting with James Whale's 1931 pre-code film starring Boris Karloff.
Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein film features a cast that includes MCU star Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the monster, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lauren Collins, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson, Burn Gormna, and two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz. Now, another MCU star is set to play Frankenstein.

Only Murders in the Building showrunner John Hoffman teases how season 5's mystery will be "very different" from previous seasons. The end of Only Murders in the Building season 4 saw the show's main trio discovering that the Arconia's doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca), had been murdered.
Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) were also visited by Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni), who asked for help with finding her missing husband, who seemingly has ties to the mafia, and whose disappearance likely connects to Lester's death.
While speaking with Deadline, Hoffman teases how the mafia-related mystery will feel different from anything the show has done before. He also hints at how this mystery connects to the mafia's real-life power and how it will introduce a "pretty colorful" group of new characters. Check out Hoffman's comments below:

There’s another murder brewing for “Only Murders in the Building,” which will return September 9 with Season 5 on Hulu. The mystery will surround (spoiler for those not through Season 4) the Arconia’s beloved doorman, Lester, who was found dead in the courtyard fountain in the waning moments of last October’s season finale.
When we last left the terrific trio — which includes Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, and the once again Emmy-nominated Martin Short as Oliver Putnam — Oliver had just married the love of his life (in the previously mentioned courtyard), the actress Loretta (Meryl Streep). As for what’s to come now or how Short might be approaching Oliver in the fifth go around, the “Three Amigos” star insisted in an interview with Deadline that he doesn’t “analyze [himself] that way.”

"Caleb put everything – the costume, the make-up, everything – before the shooting." EuropaCorp debuted a behind-the-scenes featurette for the new movie Dracula: A Love Tale, the new Dracula creation from French filmmaker Luc Besson. The movie opens in theaters in France this week – which is why this video is out now to promote the initial opening there. Though there's still no US release date set yet. Written in the 1890s, the old Dracula book follows a nobleman who loses his wife and in his grief and cursing of God is transformed into a vampire. While the original Bram Stoker story leaves on the doomed ship the Demeter, Besson's take will focus on the beginning of Dracula’s life and his relationship with his wife. Caleb Landry Jones (who was also in Besson's DogMan) stars as Prince Vladimir. When his wife is killed, a 15th century prince renounces God and becomes a vampire.

Guillermo del Toro’s long‑nurtured vision of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in late August and stream worldwide on Netflix in November 2025, according to studio representatives who released the first production stills.

With Frankenstein, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio, Cabinet of Curiosities, The Shape of Water) adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Christoph Waltz‘s villain in the Nazi-revenge film, Inglourious Basterds, is so unnervingly sadistic that it’s easy to miss one of his most disturbing acts in the process. The scene in question involves zero words and one strudel, but the damage done to the tradition and psyche of Jewish culture in that single frame is immeasurable due to the character’s subtle yet brutal disregard of the Torah.

Born from the brilliantly twisted mind of Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds is filled with scenes that make the movie so layered and endlessly rewatchable. But even despite the evil that lurks throughout the movie, Hans Landa simply manages to stand out, whether he is munching on pastries, asking for a glass of milk, or hunting down Jewish girls in the countryside.

It's alive! It's aliiive! Netflix has unveiled a creepy first look at former rom-com star Jacob Elordi's terrifying transformation into Frankenstein's monster for Guillermo del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel. Oscar Isaac stars in the film as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and it looks like he has been hard at work in his laboratory, piecing together the body of a reanimated creature. The monstrous figure is played by The Kissing Booth actor, though he is barely recognizable in this new sneak peek (featured below).
A recent trailer for Frankensteinoffered a brief glimpse of the statuesque and powerful monster, but Elordi cuts a strikingly sinister silhouette in the latest image, which arrives courtesy of Vanity Fair. As the outlet notes, "When fully exposed, the creature resembles a marble statue from antiquity that has been shattered and fused back together." Only part of the kintsugi-like monster's...
