A New Labi Siffre Compilation Will Finally Be Released in the U.S.
Image
To paraphrase a certain pioneering rock band, there’s been a whole lotta Labi in the culture over the last few years.

Long a cult figure best known for cover versions of his songs by the way-different likes of Kenny Rogers and Madness, Labi Siffre has lately undergone a Nick Drake-like moment. Two years ago, the British-born singer-songwriter’s Seventies ballad “Crying Laughing Loving Lying” was prominently heard on the soundtrack of The Holdovers, the Oscar-nominated Alexander Payne film that helped introduce Siffre’s songs to a new generation.

Image
When it comes to Apple Original Films sixth wide theatrical motion picture release, F1, you may want to get out of the way.

Brad Pitt in ‘F1: The Movie’ Warner Bros./Everett Collection

Sources tell us that the Warner Bros. released Brad Pitt PG-13 movie, has stateside pre-sales that have been heating up, gassed up from 88% certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes reviews. Currently, we hear that U.S./Canada presales for F1 are ahead of Gladiator 2 ($55M), way ahead of Pitt’s Bullet Train ($30M) and 4x that of pre-Covid 2019’s Ford v. Ferrari ($31.4M). While overseas, given the popularity of the sport, the movie was always intended to make bank for this $200M production from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski with $75M+, F1 looks to pick up speed in the states. Sources tell us that a $40M-$50M+ opening is par for the course at 3,800 theaters stateside. This...

Dolly Parton: 15 best songs ranked
Image
Dolly Parton was born January 19, 1946 as the fourth of 12 children in Tennessee. What her family lacked in money was more than made up in love and support, and a young Parton was inspired by her upbringing and surroundings, sparking her love of music. By the age of 13, she was learning guitar, writing music and performing; upon high school graduation, she moved to Nashville and embarked on one of the most successful careers in musical history. Well beyond her country and pop career, she was a 2022 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

She pleaded with Jolene to stay away from her man. She shared her stories of growing up simple and poor, but loved, in her Tennessee mountain home, where her mother made her a coat of many colors. She's a feminist who demands that standards shouldn't be different for her just because she's a woman - and...

Watch Bob Dylan’s Shocking Cover of Ricky Nelson’s ‘Garden Party’
Image
The Outlaw Music Festival touched down Thursday night on the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California, and Bob Dylan once again delivered a wildly unpredictable set that stunned even his most hardcore fans.

The biggest surprise came at the very end when he broke out Ricky Nelson’s 1972 comeback hit “Garden Party” for the first time in his career. The song chronicles a Madison Square Garden oldies revue that Nelson played in October 1971 alongside Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Bobby Rydell. Nelson initially entertained the nostalgic crowd...

Happy Birthday Bob Seger: 80 Years of Waiting on the Thunder
Image
Let’s raise a birthday toast to Bob Seger, who turns 80 today. He might be the only great American rock star who likes everybody in his songs. He’s not judging anyone in “Fire Down Below.” He hopes his crooked friend in “Still The Same” keeps getting away with it. He’s impressed by the scam artist who stole his credit card in “Sunspot Baby” and he hopes she sure had a real good time. The first rock star on a live album asking the fans up front not to hurt each other.

José Menendez’s Music Industry Past Revealed: “You Did Not Want to Incur His Wrath,” Says Former Colleague
Image
When headlines blared that businessman José Menendez had been shot 15 times along with his wife Kitty while watching TV in their Beverly Hills home on the evening of August 20, 1989, it registered as just another murder victim for most people, but those in the record industry instantly recognized the name.

Not long before, José Menendez had held a top post at RCA Records — home to Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers and Hall & Oates, among other artists, at the time — where he was tasked with turning around the label’s sagging revenue. He also signed Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, featuring a young Ricky Martin, while there and oversaw hit records by Mr. Mister, Starship and Eurythmics.

Indeed, he was such a known entity in the biz, and the story of his murder at 45, and subsequent arrests of sons Lyle and Erik Menendez (21 and 18 at the time), fascinated so many, that even irreverent...

Al Roker is known for his co-hosting duties with Today. Naturally, this has led to a variety of memorable scenes with his co-hosts. Recently, Roker gave an interesting reaction to two of his co-stars as they started singing on the show.

Two Of Al Roker’s Co-Hosts Sang A Hit From Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers

Over the years, Roker is probably best known for serving as a weather anchor. However, he has also served as a co-host for Today‘s third hour.

Occasionally, this has seen Roker involved with a variety of memorable moments with his co-stars. A recent Pop Start segment, for example, saw Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie sing “Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’: Is the Cast Really Singing Those ‘Islands in the Stream’ Covers?
Image
If there is one song you will be left struggling to get out of your head after watching “You’re Cordially Invited,” it will be “Islands in the Stream.” There are no less than three versions of the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers song sung by the cast in the film — but are they actually singing themselves?

Now streaming on Prime, the movie — directed by “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Neighbors” vet Nicholas Stoller — centers on two families who unknowingly have weddings double booked at one tiny inn. One is for Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), booked by her dad Jim (Will Ferrell). The other is for Neve (Meredith Hagner), booked by her sister Margot (Reese Witherspoon).

Eventually, Margot and Jim agree to try and share the space for the weekend. They trade off between taking the outside and indoor event space, but when a massive rainstorm hits, Jim and his family are forced to crash the indoor festivities.

‘Oh, Hi!’ Review: Charming Logan Lerman/Molly Gordon Rom-Com Subverts Indie Movie Clichés
Image
It could practically be its own subgenre by now – the low-cost indie that gets maximum production value out of being set completely in a cabin in the woods. It’s an isolated location with a limited cast where anything can happen and the characters, left to their own devices (and usually without cell phone service), can indulge in pages and pages of budget-friendly dialogue. Maybe there’s a supernatural element or suspense undertones. Add a point if there’s a reference to Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead” series, perhaps the ultimate cheap cabin-in-the-woods franchise.

You get that the filmmaking team behind “Oh, Hi!,” an endlessly charming romantic comedy that just premiered at Sundance, knows how embedded the cliches of a cabin-in-the-woods indie can be. It zigs where you think it’ll zag, weaponizing that knowledge and using it to subvert expectations. It constantly keeps you on your toes in a way that feels refreshing,...

Image
Sister Wives fans believe that they have pinpointed the exact moment when Kody Brown had face work done. His appearance has changed over the years and he has confessed to being vain. So, when do they feel he had procedures done? Keep reading for further details.

Fans Pinpoint When Kody Brown Had Face Work Done

The one thing about Kody Brown is that he does not want to age. He cares immensely about his looks and even more about his hair. In the earlier seasons of Sister Wives, he noted how he was starting to get a receeding hairline. He went on to add that his brothers were bald which viewers have seen in recent episodes. Kody made it very well known that he was taking preventative measures to ensure he did not lose his hair. Although his hair has gone through many phases and evolutions, even one that included extensions,...

Hayley Williams’ Grandfather Recorded His Debut Album 50 Years Ago. Now, It’s Finally Coming Out

Paramore might have plans to perform headbanging shows for the next couple of decades, or until Hayley Williams‘ neck gives out, but her grandfather Rusty Williams retired his musical dreams long ago.

The 78-year-old recorded an album when he was younger with his close friend and producer Frank Morris. He shared the songs with Hayley just as they were written, sitting at his piano or pulling out his guitar. He was the only one who could conjure those melodies, given that the album never made it much further than the...

Julianne Moore says she secretly had a “Little Lebowski” in the oven while filming the cult classic Coen Brothers comedy
Image
Just when I thought I knew everything about one of my favorite movies of all time, Julianne Moore is dropping knowledge bombs about The Big Lebowski on The Drew Barrymore Show! It turns out that Moore was secretly pregnant for the first time while shooting Joel and Ethan Coen’s cult classic comedy. Moore says she felt awful during portions of the film’s production, making the iconic dream bowling scene particularly challenging to pull off.

“Can I tell you? I was pregnant with my son. The first time I was pregnant. I was so sick that day,” Moore told Barrymore about the scene. “I was so nauseous I could barely move, and that dress was really solid and made from Styrofoam, and I was always like, ‘Oh,’ every time I moved… I was just unbelievably sick and I couldn’t tell anyone I was pregnant because I didn’t want them to know.

Dusty & Stones Review: Voices from the Margins
Image
Dusty & Stones stands out as a moving exploration of identity and aspiration in music documentaries. The film, which Jesse Rudoy directed, follows the journey of cousins Gazi “Dusty” Simelane and Lindokuhle “Stones” Msibi as they negotiate the complexities of the country music genre, which is frequently characterized by its American roots.

The sounds of American icons like Hank Williams and Dolly Parton are ingrained in Dusty and Stones’ childhood in the small town of Mooihoek. Still, their lives pose a philosophical question: how can someone find their voice in a world that pushes it to the edges?

The weight of their heritage and the dreams of their community rest on their shoulders as they step onto the stage in Nashville. The film makes us think about the fragility of dreams and the authenticity of light, mirroring the complex dance of light and shadow that makes up our existence.

What Happened to Anthony Michael Hall?
Image
It’s 1985, and a lanky 17-year-old is nervously pacing backstage at NBC’s Studio 8H in New York City. In just a few minutes, he’ll make history as the youngest cast member ever to grace the stage of Saturday Night Live. This isn’t just any teenager – it’s Anthony Michael Hall, already a bonafide movie star thanks to his work with writer and director John Hughes, about to take on one of the most prestigious (and pressure-filled) gigs in comedy. As the familiar strains of the SNL theme song begin to play, Hall takes a deep breath, knowing that his life is about to change yet again. But did it change for the better? Did this skinny, awkward dork continue to bless us for decades with great cinema and comedy? Or did he take a darker, more difficult path of self-destruction and/or self-discovery? Did he spend the...

Every Actor & Actress Who Played Rusty & Audrey Griswold In The Vacation Movies
Image
Rusty and Audrey Griswold were famously played by a different actor in each of the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies, and that included some huge stars. The Griswold family’s patriarch and matriarch, Clark and Ellen, were consistently played by Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo across the whole franchise — even in the 2015 reboot, two decades after the last movie — but the kids were always replaced with new cast members in each subsequent sequel. It practically became a running joke throughout the series that Clark and Ellen’s kids looked totally different and aged inconsistently from movie to movie.

Part of the reason for casting new actors as Rusty and Audrey in the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies is that child actors age a lot faster than their adult co-stars. Whereas Chase and D’Angelo looked more or less the same in the 14 years between the original Vacation film and the fourth one, Vegas Vacation,...

How 'Nutcrackers' Combines a Real Story & 1980s Classics
Image
David Gordon Green found the story of Nutcrackers in his friend's backyard. Well, kind of. Nutcrackers is his warmhearted new holiday dramedy about an uptight businessman (Ben Stiller) whose independent world is upended when his sister and brother-in-law pass away, and he finds himself caring for their four young children on their farm in the immediate aftermath. The roots of Nutcrackers lie in Green's own masterful directorial debut, George Washington, from 25 years ago, where he befriended the second unit cinematographer. As Green explained in a recent MovieWeb interview, the rest is history:

"I've just kept up with her. She dropped out of the movie business and went back to Ohio, where she's a fifth-generation farmer. So she dropped back to take care of the family farm. I've just kept up with her through the years. Then, when I went back to Ohio a couple years ago, I had a...

Fram is a longtime major player in the country-music community who oversaw the channel’s music programming overs on all verticals as well as the CMT Music Awards and franchises like CMT Storytellers, Giants and Crossroads, among other responsibilities. Yet her stature in Nashville reaches far beyond the channel, as is evident in her farewell letter:

“Among my proudest achievements has been our decade+ support of women with CMT’s ‘Next Women of Country,’ a program that has helped promote and elevate over 100 female artists on all platforms, and our efforts to move the format forward in areas of inclusion and diversity,” she writes. She...

He went solo in the 1980s, and to date has created five No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. He has achieved four Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for his song “Say You, Say Me” which won Best Original Song.

How David Gordon Green Blended ‘Bubblegum and Artsy Fartsy’ for Ben Stiller Comedy ‘Nutcrackers’ | Wrap Studio
Image
One of the buzziest titles premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this year is “Nutcrackers,” and for good reason. Not only is “Nutcrackers” Ben Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since 2017’s “The Meyerowitz Stories,” but it is also director David Gordon Green’s first non-horror movie since 2017’s underrated “Stronger.”

But from where did “Nutcrackers,” the story of a workaholic (Stiller) who has to travel to rural Ohio to look after his recently orphaned nephews after his sister dies in a car accident, originally stem?

From real life, actually.

At TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design, Green told TheWrap editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman that he visited his friend Carrie, who is the real-life mother of the four boys in the movie, on their farm and had the idea to make a movie about her family. “And maybe a year ago, we...

What Happened to Jeffrey Jones?
Image
Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia Deetz, and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.

Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in the Beetlejuice sequel– or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight. Perfectly fitting into prestigious period pieces and goofball funny flicks. Jones is a Golden Globe nominee with consistent work – a mix of villain, comedic and at times patriarchal roles, Jeffrey Jones went from Ferris Bueller baddie to Who’s Your Caddy?...

‘Nutcrackers’ Review: Ben Stiller Makes Acting Return to Roll in the Mud, Pull Heartstrings With Unruly Kids
Image
There was a time when Ben Stiller might have starred in a movie like “Nutcrackers,” full of fart jokes and poop jokes and unruly kids. And there was a time when David Gordon Green might have directed a movie like this, back before he veered into three films in the rebooted “Halloween” franchise followed by “The Exorcist: Believer.”

But on opening night of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, that time came again for Stiller and Green in “Nutcrackers,” the movie that found both men in territory that had grown unfamiliar for them in recent years.

“I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be radical if you made a movie without viciousness or cynicism?’” Green told the audience at the Princess of Wales Theatre for the first of two opening-night screenings on Thursday. To do so, he crafted a story that sounds like a gender-swapped, romance-deprived version of about 85% of all the Hallmark...

Lionel Richie on Why Recording “We Are the World” Felt Like “the First Day of Kindergarten”
Image
In the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, tensions are high as more than 40 of the top musicians of the ’80s, including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Diana Ross and Cyndi Lauper, only have a few late night hours to record the anthem “We Are the World.”

The tension is so palpable that it was still present decades later at the January premiere of the documentary, recalls Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the song with Michael Jackson and was a producer on the doc.

“When we did the premiere, Huey Lewis was sitting with me, and he leaned over to me and said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make it.’ And I said, ‘Huey, it was 40 years ago. We made it,’ ” Richie says, laughing.

The song was recorded in January 1985 by the supergroup of stars, which also included Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner and Harry Belafonte...

All 9 Dwayne Johnson Movie Villains, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Dwayne Johnson's early villain roles showcased his potential as a versatile actor in Hollywood, from comedy to action. While some of his villainous roles may not be cinematic masterpieces, they remain memorable parts of his filmography. Johnson's portrayal of Black Adam in the Dceu marked a significant step in his career, showcasing his darker side as an anti-hero.

In an acting career that has spanned the past quarter-century, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been primarily known for playing heroic lead characters, although in some instances he has switched things up and played the villain. Most notably, in the earlier days of his career, Johnson played several significant villains and, during his time as a WWE professional wrestler, would also take part in more villainous narratives. While Johnson usually liked to be the one who saved the day, it was always a treat to watch him embrace his darker side as a movie villain.

Randy Sparks Dies: Grammy-Winning Founder Of The New Christy Minstrels And TV Star Was 90
Image
Randy Sparks, whose group the New Christy Minstrels was a huge part of the folk revival of the early 1960s, died February 11 at an assisted-living facility in San Diego. He was 90.

His son, Kevin, confirmed the death to The New York Times. Sparks was living on his 168-acre ranch in Jenny Lind, CA, until a few days before his death.

The New Christy Minstrels were constantly on TV in the 1960s and sold an estimated 2 million albums in their first three years. The group’s first album, Presenting the New Christy Minstrels, won the Grammy Award for best performance by a chorus and stayed on the Billboard albums chart for two years.

The group’s 1963 LP Ramblin’ made the Top 15 and was its only gold disc. The holiday set Merry Christmas! also was a hit that year, Today hit No. 9 in 1964, becoming the Christys’ lone Top 10 album. It featured music...

‘The Greatest Night In Pop’ Recap/Review: What Happens In The Netflix’s Documentary?
Image
Chronicling what should probably be considered the Avengers Assemble of the rock music world, Netflix’s latest musical documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, lays out everything that went behind the scenes of the 1985 single We Are the World. It is certainly one of the most popular songs in the history of music, mainly because of its universal appeal and the people that are associated with it. You don’t get names like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder working together to create one single piece of art every day. It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and Netflix makes sure that the audience gets to see it that way only.

What Happens In The Documentary?

The Greatest Night in Pop takes us back to one cold winter night in January 1985, where all the shining stars of the musical world gathered together in the A&m Studios,...

Netflix's New Prince Reveal In "We Are The World" Documentary Will Change How You Hear The 39-Year-Old Song
Image
Netflix's documentary reveals that Prince was originally supposed to sing an important section of "We Are the World." Contradictory reasons for Prince's absence from the recording include not wanting to work with other stars and a feud with Michael Jackson. Despite not showing up for the recording, Prince still donated a song to the "We Are the World" album.

Netflix’s new documentary about the “We Are the World” recording, titled The Greatest Night in Pop, has a surprising revelation about which part of the song was supposed to be sung by Prince. The Greatest Night in Pop tells the story of the fateful January night in 1985 when the world’s biggest pop stars assembled to record “We Are the World,” a charity single created to donate funds for African famine relief. It was intended as an American version of the UK-based Band Aid track “Do They Know It’s Christmas?...

The Greatest Night in Pop (Sundance) Review
Image
Plot: In late 1984, inspired by the success of Band-Aid in the UK, legendary producer Quincy Jones decides to make a charity single including all of the biggest pop stars in the country. Due to the complicated schedules of all involved, they only have one evening to complete what will become one of the best-selling singles of all time, “We Are the World.”

Review: If you’ve seen the music video for “We Are the World,” you’ll know that pretty much every pop-rock icon of the first half of the eighties was there for its recording. In addition to co-writers Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, there was Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Paul Simon, Steve Perry and so many more. Even Dan Aykroyd showed up singing in the chorus.

The song was a charity single...

Sundance: Director Bao Nguyen On ‘We Are The World’ Docu, Lionel Richie Karaoke, Prince’s Guitar & Return To Park City
Image
“I didn’t really know much about the making of the song,” admits The Greatest Night in Pop director Bao Nguyen of 1985’s star-studded Ethiopian famine relief hit “We Are the World.” “You just make these assumptions about how things are made because it just happens. But when you think now of 46 great artists getting together to make that, it would be really impossible for that to happen now.”

Whether or not the superstars of 2024 could or would come together like the hit makers of the Reagan Era did in America and the UK almost 40 years ago is debatable. What is a fact is that Nguyen’s latest documentary is debuting today at the Sundance Film Festival just a few days short of when U.S.A. for Africa recorded the Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson penned tune in a studio in Los Angeles. It is also a fact that, after a total of four Sundance screenings,...

How Dolly Parton Became TV's Patron Saint of Christmas
Image
If you're looking for something to normalize the upcoming Christmas season, one thing that will both do the trick and be abundantly available is Dolly Parton. The legendary country musician and actress has doubled down on holiday cheer in recent years, rebranding herself as streaming TV's own personal Secret Santa.

Of course, the "rebrand" part of it is really only in the pivot to streaming platforms like Netflix — where she produced and starred in Christmas on the Square — because Dolly Parton has been a Christmas institution in America for decades. That Peak TV is giving us Christmas Dolly at levels we haven't seen since the heyday of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers in the 1980s is just a Christmas bonus, and who doesn't love those?...
