How many more horror genre interpretations of “[negative emotion] is a monster” can you stomach? Well, make room for one more. J.C. Doler’s The Twin brings Irish folklore into a heartbreaking drama about every parent’s ultimate fear. Themes and symbolism are plain as day, and yet Doler successfully pulls genuine empathy from the simplest “Trauma Horror” formula. The film never plays dumb, valuing honest conversations about therapy, accountability, and the frightening depths where our darkest thoughts lurk. It’s no Relic or Anguish (2015), but The Twin tells a bitter tale of headstones and doppelgängers worth a Shudder stream.

"It was supposed to be fun." That is the tagline featured on the official poster Collider can exclusively share for The Threesome, and it perfectly sums up what the unconventional rom-com is all about. Directed by Little Fish helmer Chad Hartigan, the film features exactly what it sounds like — a love triangle consisting of Doctor Who's Jonah Hauer-King, Juror #2's Zoey Deutch, and Willow's Ruby Cruz, who get together for one magical romantic evening. However, it's about so much more than that, following what happens after the hook-up, as all three face the consequences and are forced to take accountability for their actions.
The poster is all about the happiness and pleasure of the three parties, as everyone is all smiles while lying in bed together. It's the culmination of one fateful night in which the unassuming Connor (Hauer-King) finally gets the chance to start a real relationship with his longtime crush,...

Monogamy isn’t for everyone. Some people like to spice things up in the bedroom by adding a third (or more) to the mix. To each their own, though you’d best be ready to deal with the consequences of an unplanned pregnancy or catching feelings for one partner and not the other. In Vertical‘s The Threesome trailer, Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Ruby Cruz discover the complications that could come from one night of abandon.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Threesome:

"I'm not doing this is there's a side-piece baby momma, absolutely not!" Vertical has revealed the official trailer for The Threesome, a funny sex comedy from filmmaker Chad Hartigan. This first premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, with stops at many other fests, and it opens in theaters this September. A young man's perennial crush leads him into an unexpected threesome – he thinks it's his ultimate fantasy come true. (Obviously...) When the fantasy ends, all three are left with sobering real-world consequences and they must take responsibility for their actions. An impulsive night leads to a wild threesome between Olivia, Connor, and Jenny, leaving both women facing unexpected surprises, thrusting all three right into the raw and beautifully messy chaos of adulthood. Things are about to get hot, heavy, and very complicated for Jonah Hauer-King, Zoey Deutch, and Ruby Cruz. Vertical has released the first trailer for The Threesome, a romantic comedy that is so much more than its opening encounter. The footage teased a messy romantic journey that goes beyond sex and follows its three stars as they come to terms with what it means to be a true adult and take accountability when it matters. It's a dramatic tale all about the emotional entanglements and the consequences that arise from one night together, and it's set to hit theaters on September 5.
The Threesome casts Hauer-King as the unassuming Connor, who has long had a crush on his former co-worker, Olivia (Deutch). On one fateful night, while visiting the restaurant that employed them both, she steers them both toward an encounter with the alluring Jenny (Cruz), who had been stood up by her date.

The Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival has always been a space for cinema that pushes boundaries, disrupts worldviews, and leaves a slippery residue of viscera on the screen—during a festival otherwise dominated by predominantly highbrow, highly serious selections. As the fest turns 50 this September, the program’s disregard for good taste, social norms, and any semblance of staying inside the box shows zero signs of changing.
It’s no wonder TIFF’s Midnight Madness/Strange Cuts program was recently ranked first in Dread Central’s definitive list of the 90 Best Genre Fests on Earth (in a three-way tie with Fantasia and Sitges, respectively).
To prepare for this year’s lineup, I sat down with TIFF Midnight Madness lead programmer Peter Kuplowsky to break down the salacious selections—from the nastiest and most shocking titles to the grim, macabre, and everything in between. Kuplowsky is partly...

The film opens on a scene of domestic tranquility so perfectly composed it feels fragile, a prelude to rupture. We meet Nicholas and Charlie, a couple whose life with their cherubic son, Jacob, is rendered in warm, soft-focus tones that all but scream “before.”
The narrative architecture is classical, almost cruel, in its establishment of an idyll it has no intention of maintaining. The inevitable break comes not with a slow tear but a violent shatter: a household accident, swift and unceremonious, erases the child from the frame.
This sudden void sends Nicholas into a tailspin of guilt so profound that he follows it with a desperate, failed attempt to exit his own life. The film’s palette shifts instantly from warm to clinical, its tone to a low, persistent hum of dread.
As Nicholas returns from institutional care to the now-cavernous family home, the camera lingers on empty doorways and silent rooms,...

Sonja O’Hara Has a Queer Existential Crisis After Taking Shrooms with Her Toxic Ex in ‘Snare’ Teaser
Sonja O’Hara is back onscreen with another genre-bending queer feature, this time titled “Snare.”
O’Hara made her debut feature with “Root Letter,” which starred Danny Ramirez. She later was Daytime Emmy–nominated for creating, directing, and starring in horror series “Doomsday,” with the script inspired by her being cast in Scientology instructional videos. Now, O’Hara is launching her sophomore feature “Snare” during Pride 2025, just as she also is one of the selected filmmakers to be part of the Tribeca Creators Market.
“Snare” stars O’Hara as Rowena, a mycologist studying the connection between all living mushroom biology. Yet it’s her own drug-fueled chemistry with ex Jackie (Mars) that threatens to disrupt life as she knows it.
The official synopsis reads: “Ro and Jax aren’t right for each other, but the women can’t bring themselves to separate. It is a dark kismet that each found the...

“The Threesome” is quick to establish its rom-com bona fides by opening at a wedding, but like much in Chad Hartigan’s sixth feature, there’s a little something more going on when it sets the stage for a marriage of sensibilities behind the scenes. The director, who is capable of both contemplative dramas (“This Is Martin Bonner”) and raucous comedies (“Morris From America”), tries to strike a balance between screenwriter Ethan Ogilby’s cringe-humor premise of an impromptu ménage à trois and the more serious relationship dynamics it suggests. The results are mixed in ways the filmmakers probably didn’t intend, but they’re at once genuinely intriguing and enormously charming given the talent involved.

There have been plenty of great sci-fi comedies in the last decade, from underrated gems to award winners and summer blockbusters. Sci-fi comedies are often best when they balance their two genres well. Movies like Back to the Future and Men in Black, for example, have thrilling stories and intriguing sci-fi concepts, as well as great jokes and strong comedic performances.
In the last 10 years, sci-fi comedies have been used to lovingly poke fun at the genre, but sci-fi has also been used as a guise to facilitate plenty of social commentary and satire. Movies like Sorry to Bother You, Palm Springs and The Lobster all use sci-fi concepts to show how unusual everyday life has become for people in the here and now. Other sci-fi comedies have used humor to lighten up some cerebral stories that could otherwise be too dystopian and depressing.

Vampires are some of the best monsters in movies and TV shows and the most popular. While they're terrifying and bloodthirsty in most media, the past several decades have delved into the magnetic and seductive qualities of the creatures that much of the original writings about vampires are in conversation with. There are many ways to interpret the popularity of vampires in media, as they're typically used as a metaphor for a taboo subject or hidden desires. This forbidden nature has made vampires the perfect romantic leads for many contemporary series and films.
However, the best vampire TV shows aren't just about romance or horror. They go deeper and attempt to comment on the larger nature of the world and what it means to be human. The most powerful vampires in movies and TV are so fearsome and iconic because the stories they inhabit are so vivid and lend themselves to imaginative world-building.

"This is in your mind! It is not real! You are real!" An early festival teaser has debuted for an indie horror film premiering this month at the 2024 Austin Film Festival, playing in their Dark Matters Features section. The film is called The Fetch, marking the feature directorial debut of indie genre filmmaker J.C. Doler, telling an eerie tale of grief & demons. Following the death of his only son, a grieving father is haunted by a terrifying demon known in Irish folklore as the Fetch. A fetch is a supernatural double or an apparition of a living person. The sighting of a fetch is regarded as an omen, usually for impending death... The indie film stars Robert Longstreet, Aleksa Palladino, Logan Donovan, Shannon Cochran, & Tripp Toupal. Well damn this looks actually quite scary and especially creepy with all the weird gross hands popping out of everywhere. Plus evil doppelgangers appearing randomly.

In Irish folklore and literature dating back to the 1500s, writers from the island nation have written about mythical beings known as “Fetches” that haunt people whose days are numbered. According to legend, Fetches take on the physical form of the humans they visit — and if your own creepy doppelganger visits you in the evening, it means your death is imminent. He is also responsible for Netflix limited series The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher. Miramax's Head Of Worldwide Television, Marc Helwig, says they are on a fast track to lock down the creative team for the upcoming Halloween show. Helwig says the show is a creative reset, going back to the original film and potentially exploring characters not focused on in recent movies. The show has the potential to expand into a wider cinematic universe, building on the foundation of the John Carpenter classic movie.
The in-development Halloween TV show has received a major update. The Halloween slasher franchise began in 1978 with the original John Carpenter classic of the same name and has since expanded to include 13 movies in total. In late 2011, William Eubank took a job as second unit director of Allen Hughes’ Broken City. Hughes hired Eubank off of early footage from his feature directorial debut, Love (2011), which is a Kubrickian arthouse film that he made in collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves. The second-unit gig was especially meaningful because it not only landed Eubank his DGA card, but it also marked the beginning of his career-long trajectory with Broken City’s co-lead, Russell Crowe, who’s now leading his action-thriller, Land of Bad.
In 2016, while Crowe was on the promotional trail for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Eubank met up with him to discuss his now long-gestating fantasy actioner, World Breaker, however, despite Crowe’s interest at the time, the filmmaker was pulled away when Underwater got the green light from 20th Century Fox. Mike Flanagan worked for quite a while before gaining worldwide recognition and acclaim for the first TV series he'd created, Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Prior to Netflix, there were multiple masterful films from Flanagan throughout the 2010s, with not a single dud in the bunch, but with Hill House, Flanagan has seemed to fall in love with the TV format and hasn't released a film since.
The filmmaker now has a longtime deal with Netflix, which has proven to be pretty productive. Flanagan has already directed the Stephen King adaptation of Gerald's Game for Netflix and has continued their creative partnership with The Haunting of Bly Manor, the horror series masterpiece Midnight Mass, and the recently released The Midnight Club.
