The Toronto International Film Festival announced today the TIFF 2025 selections for the highly regarded Midnight Madness program, its signature slate of wicked wonders that are sure to delight and disturb the Festival’s devoted and raucous late-night crowd.

The 2025 edition features seven World Premieres and is bookended by two of the year’s most acclaimed midnight comedies. Midnight Madness opens with the Canadian Premiere of Matt Johnson’s Toronto-set Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, based on Johnson’s cult Viceland series and recipient of the Midnighter Audience Award at this year’s SXSW. Horror-comedy Dead Lover closes out the fest’s midnight section.

Logan Donovan (Colony) appears as Nicholas, who is immersed in grief after losing his son. Nicholas and his wife Charlie (Aleksa Palladino of The Irishman) are estranged, and he is under the care of a sympathetic psychiatrist named Dr. Beaumont.

When his wife leaves, Nicholas is alone in his home, and starts to hear voices and suffer from nightmares. Things come to a head when he encounters a figure that looks disturbingly like him. “The Threesome” is quick to establish its rom-com bona fides by opening at a wedding, but like much in Chad Hartigan’s sixth feature, there’s a little something more going on when it sets the stage for a marriage of sensibilities behind the scenes. The director, who is capable of both contemplative dramas (“This Is Martin Bonner”) and raucous comedies (“Morris From America”), tries to strike a balance between screenwriter Ethan Ogilby’s cringe-humor premise of an impromptu ménage à trois and the more serious relationship dynamics it suggests. Prior to Netflix, there were multiple masterful films from Flanagan throughout the 2010s, with not a single dud in the bunch, but with Hill House, Flanagan has seemed to fall in love with the TV format and hasn't released a film since.

The filmmaker now has a longtime deal with Netflix, which has proven to be pretty productive. Flanagan has already directed the Stephen King adaptation of Gerald's Game for Netflix and has continued their creative partnership with The Haunting of Bly Manor, the horror series masterpiece Midnight Mass, and the recently released The Midnight Club.
