"I am the anointed servant of God and I tell you to be silent!" Deadhead turned born-again-Christian Carl (Kinnear) is friends with the pastor of his local mega-church Dan Day (Brosnan) and is invited to accompany him to scientist Dr. Paul Blaylock's (Harris) house for a discussion. When a terrible accident happens Carl finds himself fingered in the incident and does everything he can to prove he is innocent. Things aren't always easy though. Having never seen a preview for this I was excited for this based off the cast alone. While I will say this is a good movie and a very dark comedy I was a little disappointed. The main flaw this had was that the movie had a good idea but had only ten minutes of it. There was a lot of repeating going on and a few scenes that seemed like they were only put in to increase the running time. I have to say that Brosnan and Kinnear played very similar parts to the ones they played in "The Matador" (which is a better movie) but it seems to fit them. It may sound like I'm bashing this movie. I don't mean to if that's how it comes off. I did enjoy it and laughed a few times but based off the cast I was a little disappointed (but after movies like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Son Of No One" I need to stop thinking just because the cast is great means the movie will be great.) Overall, a decent dark comedy that is worth watching but tone down your expectations. I give it a B-.

Carl Vanderveer (Greg Kinnear) used to be a Deadhead, and now is a follower of a charismatic church leader Dan Day (Pierce Brosnan). After a debate with atheist Peter Blaylock (Ed Harris), he invites Dan and Carl back home to pitch his idea of joining up to co-author a book. However, Dan accidentally shoots Peter and tries to frame it as a suicide. Then Dan tries to frame Carl as the shooter.
This is a black comedy without the comedy. Greg Kinnear may not be a good comedic lead if George Ratliff is aiming for funny. He is constantly taking shots at fundamental Christians, but it never really sticks. As a satire, this is a struggle to find any humor. Everybody is trying desperately to be outrageous especially Jennifer Connelly, but they do it without a clue of how to make it funny.

Salvation Boulevard is a star packed ensemble "dramedy" based loosely on Larry Beinhart's novel of the same title. Greg Kinnear plays Carl, a former "deadhead" (followers of the band Grateful Dead) who has settled into a nice quite life with his uptight and super religious wife Gwen, played by Jennifer Connelly. Gwen religiously attends the Church of the Third Millennium which is led by the charismatic Pastor Dan Day, played by Pierce Brosnan. Having enraptured the town with his holy message, Day sustains a small empire for himself made out of an adoring congregation that worships him like a prophet. With an ego of the size of Jesus' cross, Day aspires to build a "city upon a hill", a planned and private community, complete with a school and hospital. Not only will this provide a safe and convenient sanctuary for God's worshipers but as the chief developer of this colossal undertaking Day stands to make a healthy sum of money.
However, the meeting of renown atheist extraordinaire Dr. Paul Blaylock, played by Ed Harris, puts it all at risk. After a public philosophical debate, Blaylock and Pastor Day retire to Blaylock's office for a friendly nightcap. Carl tags along to the meeting as Day's newly evangelized prize. Here a genial discussion about a joint book venture turns awry when Day accidentally shoots Blaylock in the head with an antique pistol.
In a moment of panic, the Pastor disguises the incident as a suicide attempt with Carl in the room as seemingly the only witness to Day's deceit. Carl's life then spirals into disaster as not only do his wife and closest friends not believe his truthful story but there are others trying to kidnap and frame him.
Salvation Boulevard's story line has a similar feel to that of the Coen Brother's film The Big Lebowski [1998]. Like "the Dude" in The Big Lebowski, Carl plays a very passive protagonist who gets caught up in mortal danger through no fault of his own. He is seemingly moved from precarious situation to the next by all forces other than himself. Carl passivity is contrasted by the outrageous antics of the characters that surround him. Pierce Brosnan with his good looks, deep voice and smooth command of language personifies an excellent slimy and manipulative pastor. As Day's ego and paranoia grow throughout the film so does Brosnan's comedic affect as he literally starts to believe the devil is after him.
With such a wealth of idiosyncratic characters Salvation Boulevard was able to attract a large award winning cast, including Marisa Tomei who plays a free spirited security guard. Jennifer Connelly and Jim Gaffigan play Day's fanatical and easily persuaded followers. Some would say these characters are a cruel misrepresentation of the Evangelical community. They may have a point, but taking this comedic movie too personally deprives the viewer from finding all the comical religious Easter eggs in the film. One of which is a building with devilish horns on the roof where Carl is taken to by Day's zealots. The laughs in Salvation Boulevard are not gut busters but are subtlety sprinkled throughout the film.
On the down, this film has a less than satisfying ending and seems to end abruptly. The side characters don't get endings that are worthy over their performances. Instead they are given in the form of text. An extra ten minutes might have wrapped the film in a more imprinting manner. Salvation Boulevard is layered with jokes that lie not only in th dialogue and action but also in the art direction and cinematography, giving the film the rare quality of finding something new every time you watch it. Unfortunately, this film will probably go under appreciated as critics have slammed it for its obvious slant against Evangelical Christians. However, I have faith that in time Salvation Boulevard will find its audience, but they probably won't be as devoted as your average "deadhead".

While this is not Casablanca, this is a great little sleeper of a film. Great cast, funny script, good production values, I'm just astonished it bombed at the box office.
The story of a preacher gone bad, a dead head turned believer, and a cast of character actors that are very well cast. It's a slapstick of a film, but we live in a world where that isn't enough.
The plot is right on the money, with with a series of turns and twists that entertain at every junction. I've never seen Pierce Brosnan as well cast as the Evangelical that goes astray. Greg Kinnear is superb in the role of the deadhead turned believer who has his faith tested. Ed Harris is perfect in the role of anti-Christ author, Marisa Tomei is just hilarious as the redeemer of Greg. Jennifer Connelly plays a very convincing wife who just can't believe that the pastor is in the wrong. Isabelle Furman plays a wonderful role in the daughter who is caught in the middle.
Great funny lines, incredibly fun acting. If you are looking for a fun night and need a video, this is it. I have to imagine this film might be more successful over time, and as people discover it. If you are a born again Christian, this might not be your cup of tea.

I hate to state the obvious but Pierce Brosnan isn't funny. He may be very talented at all kinds of other genres, but in this film he seems to constantly choose the non-funny way of playing every scene . Jennifer Connelly ditto, but she probably knows she's not funny. Greg Kinnear is wont to be superficial, but when he is well directed he can be amusing. Here he has very little to work with, character-wise, and is irritatingly dull. There are so many sequences in this film that could be funny, but aren't, due to a combination of casting and direction. It's a film full of unrealised potential. Marisa Tomei, actually seems to have an idea of who her character is, and in her lamentably scant appearances is convincing and winning. She wrung a few laughs out of me, because she is almost director-proof. Ciaran Hinds, similarly, almost works. I did keep watching because the plotting is well wrought. In other words: I wanted to see what would happen next. BUT Comedy is just about the toughest gig to pull off. It needs an experienced comedy director and leads who are funny. Stop wasting money!
I gotta hand it to writer/director George Ratliff for being so bold. I'm not just talking about offending audiences. I'm saying if God does exist, then there's certainly a hot seat in store for Georgie Boy.
Actually I'm kidding. "Salvation Boulevard", while being unapologetically one-sided, isn't so offensive that religious folks can't laugh about it. I'd like to think it pokes fun at the hypocrisy of certain religious leaders, not religion itself.
But what do I know. I'm pacifist and yet I enjoyed Deathwish 1 thru 5.
Right off the bat, "Salvation Boulevard" gets points for its wacky, original plot. A celebrity televangelist, played by Pierce Brosnan, and a recently-converted (but thoroughly confused) ex-Deadhead, played by Greg Kinnear, get wrapped up in an unintentional crime against an atheist (Ed Norton). Due to a series of panicked, bad decisions, it just keeps getting deeper & deeper for both of them. Our hero, the Deadhead, is sort of an Everyman character who muddles his way through the madness without ever seeming to comprehend what's going on. Conversely, Brosnan the televangelist thinks he's in control, but his situation (and his moral fiber) rapidly unwind as he starts suffering from delusions that the Devil is hot on his trail.
Adding to the fun are some equally wacky characters: Marisa Tomei as the flaky retro-hippie girl, Jennifer Connelly as the insanely obsessed follower, Jim Gaffigan as the even-MORE-insanely obsessed follower (I'm talking "Terminator" obsessed), Yul Vazquez as the comically sinister Mexican crime boss, and a host of others thrown in.
"Salvation Boulevard" is a roller-coaster dark comedy that reminds me of the unknown gems "Grand Theft Parsons" (about 2 guys who decide to steal the body of famed musician Gram Parsons) and "Leaves of Grass" (about a hillbilly and his yuppie brother who get wrapped up in a crazy drug caper). And of course there's the classic oldie "Fletch Lives" (where Chevy Chase takes on a questionable TV ministry). All of these films are worth a watch and should get some lols out of everyone.

Basically, the movie about a pastor who tries to cover up an accident and things get out of control in the process. Overall, the acting was good throughout. A problem I had with this movie was the "comedy music" that plays when there was a "funny" situation going on. I thought they were pushing it too hard on some scenes. In my opinion, it would have still been as funny without the music. And it's a dark comedy, "comedy music" is not needed in dark comedies. Though it's a bit annoying, but not annoying enough to tamper my enjoyment of the movie.
The story is well written with enough twists to keep you guessing, and the metaphors are well done, especially the Christianity themes. If you've seen the movie Four Lions, then this is a Christianity version of it. There's isn't much similarity in story, but it is thematically similar. A good pick for fans of dark comedies.

After going through a disappointing summer movie line up this year " 2011 " so far, i was more than happy when i found this film playing in a theater near by.
And after watching this very enjoyable movie, i was left surprised in why it had a very limited release ? unlike most big budget summer movies, this movie focused on substance rather than style. it had a very engaging story that unfolds in a very intriguing way.
the story is that of a well known Pastor played by Pierce Brosnan who gets involved in a debate with a disbeliever and writer played by Ed Harris, soon after, the pastor gets involved in a sinful accident and tries to use his religious influences to get himself out. stuck in the middle of all this, is an ex-deadhead played by Greg Kinnear.
the Characters and acting were the best thing in the movie, a wonderful cast lead by Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connely and Marisa TOmey. they all deliver very memorable performances, and they added a lot to their characters. the characters were fun and seemed very familiar, easy to identify with.
the film was more of a dark comedy, very funny and laugh out loud moments involving religion, relationships and even murder.
I am just so surprised with the limited release, this film deserves a wider release and should reach more audience. I highly recommend this.

Especially if they are religious. Of course if you really look close into the movie, you could also make the case that this might actually be quite good to religion. Or to those who believe in God that is. You can always read things into it, if you are willing to. I think one should be open minded to movies like this. It's not really offensive. Men (and women) are weak, that's just the way it is.
Plus the cast is phenomenal! Every role is a name actor, even if it's the smallest, it seems they got someone with value. When Jim Gaffigan is the least known (a really good comedian), than you know you have hit the jackpot. You might argue that some characters are not really drawn all that well or thorough, but there is only limited time. While they could've done some things better, that is something you can always say about a movie

How you enjoy (or lack thereof), I suppose, is determined by your view on religion in a way.
The story in "Salvation Boulevard" is about Carl (played by Greg Kinnear) who witnesses the accidental shooting of author and non-believer Peter Blaylock (played by Ed Harris) by the hand of pastor Dan Day (played by Pierce Brosnan). The pastor tries to cover up the accident by making it look like a suicide, and when Carl becomes a liability, the pastor frames Carl for the incident and goes to great lengths to see him removed from the equation.
Actually the story was quite good, it was nicely told and had just the right amount of comedy to it without becoming too much. The laughs that were here in the movie were really nicely earned and well placed. Director George Ratliff managed to put together a rather nicely told movie here.
However, what really carried the movie was the performances put on by the people on the cast list; the actors and actresses really did nice jobs with their characters. And these characters were really nicely detailed, nicely fleshed out and portrayed in manners that made them come off as characters the audience can relate to. I initially sat down to watch this movie because I enjoy the work of Jennifer Connelly, although her role in this movie was only a supporting one.
If you are looking for comedies that will cause you to laugh until tear trickle down your cheeks, then "Salvation Boulevard" might not be the best of choices. But, however, if you enjoy a light-hearted drama that is spiced up with some comedy and great acting performances, then by all means, sit down and watch "Salvation Boulevard".

While watching this film I couldn't help but laugh but not that I found it to be that funny but because I have actually met over the top religious nut cases in real life. They were my schoolteachers and this movie really took me back to those days where instead of learning math I was learning stuff like if you play an electrical guitar you'll go straight to hell or when you sneeze it's really the man upstairs busy shortening your lifespan by taking away pieces of your breath. Believe it or not that was what my high schoolteachers told their students and it didn't end there.
I found SALVATION BOULEVARD funny because the characters in some ways closely resembled my teachers and if I was to show them this film they would undoubtedly freak out and say it makes a mockery out of them. If however you fall into the class of normal people and get easily offended I wouldn't recommend it. Actually I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it at all. It's really a stupid movie if you consider the plot. Some might find it funny others might find it just plain stupid.
The only thing really noteworthy about it is the acting, each of the cast members play their parts very well. The film itself never really gets boring but does get slightly annoying in certain places.
Final Verdict, it's really not worth going out of your way to see, but if you are curious enough to see it then by all means. I found it funny for completely different reasons so I can't say other people will find it funny but seeing the actors in this film give their over the top performances is worth it if you've come across people like those portrayed in this movie in real life.

Most of the others reviews here touch on the religious aspects of the movie. For me, that was utterly unimportant; it was just the MacGuffin to move the plot along. Religion really wasn't that significant. The same plot could have been advanced in any number of ways. What matters to me with any movie is the writing and acting.
The problem here is that the writing is terrible. Poor Greg Kinnear was a one-dimensional character, acting like a hapless schlub through the whole movie. That got old fast. All the attempts at humor fell flat. It was not a noir movie, not a dark comedy, just a lame comedy with no laughs in it. Or, if you will, a drama that wasn't dramatic in any way, some supposed humor tossed in. No matter how you look at it, it was a failure
There were some big name actors in the movie; I felt sorry for them. I guess they were just in it for the paycheck. There is no way they could possibly have thought the script was any good. I felt especially bad for Jennifer Connelly. Her character was ridiculous. Just over the top; not funny, not a manifestation of any deeper meaning.
About 2/3 of the way through it fell completely off the rails. Another plot line was thrown in there, I guess because the writers couldn't come up with anything else to do. That part was absurd. And not in the "absurdist" kind of good way. At that point I about gave up, but I suffered through the first part of the movie, so I forced myself to watch it all. It didn't get any better.
I see from other sites that the movie failed in the theaters and quickly went directly to video, and lost money overall. On the most famous film rating site, it gets 23% approval from both critics and audiences. I'm surprised the numbers went that high.
Avoid. Ignore the positive reviews here; they are as ridiculous as the movie was. There are too many good movies out there to waste time on this dreck.

This is a lightweight, by the numbers, satirical comedy thriller on evangelical religion.
While discussing ideas for a new book where two contrasting people would make opposing views on organised religion. Pastor, Dan Day (Pierce Brosnan), accidentally shoots atheist Dr Blaylock (Ed Harris) and then in a panic tries to make it look like a suicide.
However Carl Vandermeer (Greg Kinnear) a born again Christian, former The Grateful Dead fan and dope-head was there when the shooting takes place.
He is framed by Pastor Day and his cronies are out to silence him. Even Carl's own family disbelieve him.
The moment Brosnan shoots Harris, you know Kinnear will be the fall guy. You also know the members of the church will little persuading to pin the blame on Kinnear.
The film holds few surprises bar the intervention of a shady Mexican gangster. There is very little by way of redemption and understanding. The satire is not sharp enough and it is the acting of the leads which carries the film.
Before he got shot, it would had been better if we had longer scenes of Harris and Brosnan having their philosophical discussions.

Adapted for the big screen from Larry Beinhart's book by the same name, Salvation Boulevard premiered at the Sundance Film Festival boasting a cast including Greg Kinnear, Pierce Bronson, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Marisa Tomei, Ciaran Hinds, and Isabella Fuhrman. Though the conversation spurred on by the satire is one in which I plan to further engage, the movie itself left me desiring to read the original, which comes highly recommended via the review of others.
Despite a Sundance premiere, Salvation Boulevard seemed to be about as deep and thoughtful as the object of its satire; mega church culture and the pastors who lead them. One thing that could not be denied, though, was the smirk on my face as I pondered the possible intentionality of George Ratliff and this face-value choice. With one of Ratliff's most notable works being the 2001 Hell House that documents the real-life hell-as-reality haunted house turned outreach for a Texas church, is there a hint of actual strategy in the furry of Salvation Boulevard's lose end tying and obvious devil-is-calling-your-cell-phone scenes?
Though the irony is thick and jokes are obvious, will the very church goers that Salvation Boulevard depicts avoid the conversation altogether? While some non-evangelicals may scoff at a cheap satire focused on an easy target, the questions that Salvation Boulevard raises with its blunt references are an opportunity for dialogue, not further polarization. Might an examination of assumptions from both evangelicals and those annoyed by them reveal a third and fourth demographic? Let us not forget about those attempting to live out an authentic journey of faith in Jesus within an intentionally less commercial version of the Christian church as well as those of other faiths searching and living away from the debates and finger pointing. This is a comedy, folks, and my personal hope would be that its jokes would not offend before they even have the opportunity to be considered and appreciated by others who make it a practice to ask good questions and live out of authentic faith.
Not the best done movie, but well worth the consideration and dialogue that may result.
I grew up Southern Baptist and I thought this movie was laugh out loud funny. Of course, there was some predictable religious jokes. Lots of confusion & communication-based chaos with a karma-tic ending (though a bit trite). Actually saw this movie September 2010 at a early release film screening where we were able to review the film afterward. I hope they re-shot the ending, as the conclusion was a bit abrupt. Overall, it was a great laugh. Pierce Brosnan is EXCELLENT as Rev. Dan Day. Stand out performances by Greg Kinnear and Marisa Tomei as well. Not sure if this film will be a small release, but it's worth finding to see.

This is one of those films that don't appear much on paper and you watch when you have exhausted all other avenues. I had never heard of the film and it appears to have had a very limited cinema release. I therefore wasn't expecting much.
I was surprised as the cast list which boasts an impressive array of talent. Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connolley, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei and Ed Harris are all quality actors and it would take a particularly bad script for this to be a turkey.
This is a dark comedy and it doesn't always work, the plot is pretty flimsy and at times especially early on it drags a bit but once it hits its stride there are plenty of dark comedic moments as Greg Kinnear (an excellent performance) goes on the run.
This film probably won't be anything you haven't seen before but it is pretty entertaining and worth at least one watch.

For one time that an American movie shows a bit of originality, it's finally destroyed by an awful production !
First, it's a acid comedy about faith which is always helpful for the audience instead to be brainwashed by silly blockbusters. In addition, for a french guy like me, it's a real opportunity as french producers just don't wan't to do movies about this kind of movies ! Next, all the characters are finely fleshed and the casting has found some great names to play them : Jennifer, cool and cunning James Bond n°5, grumpy Ed Harris and other known faces Next, the thematic and its players are synthesized into a crazy story, full of surprises and funny twists !
Unfortunately, all this is lost in the production ! Like most American movies since 2010, this one abuses the famous ugly Blue / Orange color scheme ! The cinematography relies on those two disgusting choices and the props and wardrobes used them too. So we are left with a smurfs movie or too much tanned people living in a blue / orange world ! It's everywhere, every time for everything or everyone and the pleasure a good « Technicolor » movie is gone ! Thus, it's a pity that such bad taste is left unnoticed as it's become an anti-watching tool that kills too many good movies !

There are too Few Movies like this and it is a Shame when one comes along with such a Stellar Pedigree that has no Faith in its Dark Satire. From the Book by the Author of Wag the Dog and the Director of the Documentary Hell House (2001) and a Cast sent from Heaven, this Ends Up being a rather Lame and Forgettable Hellhound with No Bite.
It Waivers from Dark Comedy to Light Comedy to Semi-Thriller and never really finds its Place. It is not all Bad but not all that Good. Christian Fundamentalists will find it Offensive, Obviously, but there really isn't Anything in this Misfire that is that Offensive.
Worth a View for what might have been, but the Subject Matter that it Targets is too Soul Saving Serious not to Poke Harder with all that Talent. In the End it is just too Light to be the Dark Comedy it Pretends.
