Exclusive: It was the place where American viewers were always glad they came — and now the Cheers bar is hoping to open its doors to Brits.

Deadline can reveal that Big Talk Studios, the producer behind Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon series The Outlaws, is pitching a UK version of NBC’s iconic comedy. Thirty years after Cheers’ last orders, Big Talk has enlisted Simon Nye, the British writer known for Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, to adapt the series for a UK audience. Nye will be showrunner if Cheers is greenlit.

Cheers ran for 11 seasons and 275 episodes on NBC, depicting life in a titular Boston bar run by Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Regulars included Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley), and the show is consistently ranked among the best comedies ever made.

The hilarious and adored period sitcom That '70s Show introduced audiences everywhere to the lovable stoner misfits of Point Place, Wisconsin. The series follows a group of six teenagers living in the grooviest decade of all as they deal with adolescence, romance, and overbearing parents while navigating life’s ups and downs. The sitcom was notorious for its depiction of “the circle,” a recurring scene that illustrated the gang’s use of marijuana in Eric Forman’s basement, but without actually ever showing cannabis paraphernalia. That '70s Show addressed many social issues of the time period, such as generational conflict, sexual attitudes, and both fashion and entertainment trends. The program helped launch the careers of many of its talented leads, as the cast members went on to star in an array of hit television shows and films.

Former That '70s Show star, Danny Masterson, is facing up to 30 years in prison. Some speculate that he always gave them a bad vibe, and his role on That '70s Show supports that narrative. It's hard to say if he was as obviously creepy in the show watching it the first time, but in light of his current situation, his character makes your skin crawl. Just like in real life, his character on That '70s Show, Hyde, was a creep.

From 1998 to 2006, Fox's hit series That '70s Show made a major impact on viewers of all ages. Reliving the vibes of the 1970s in the fictional town of Point Place, Wisconsin, the series followed six teenage friends who spent their free time hanging out in main character Eric Forman's basement. Though the '70s have often been a point of parody on account of their strange place between the groovy '60s and the materialistic '80s, something about That '70s Show inspired a sense of realism and nostalgia in viewers who both experienced the time period or heard all about it from their parents.

The series was so popular it inspired a British remake called Days Like These, as well as Fox's That '80s show. While neither of those shows did nearly as well as the original, Netflix's 2023 reprisal, That '90s Show, was a hit with viewers.
