John Hughes is responsible for the greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time, 1987’s poignant Planes, Trains & Automobiles. This Steve Martin and John Candy-led classic has become a perennial and a movie tons of folks have probably been revisiting this week. However, about four years later, in 1991, John Hughes made another Thanksgiving movie in the same vein, Dutch. Despite being a pretty solid movie with a very recognizable cast, it’s a hard movie to track down nowadays.
Dutch is very much in the vein of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in that it pairs a snooty, white-collar guy with a more down-to-earth, blue-collar kind of guy. The big twist here is that the white-collar guy is a kid, with Ethan Embry (then known as Ethan Randall) playing a prep-school kid who winds up on a long journey home for Thanksgiving with his mom’s new boyfriend, Dutch, played by Ed O’Neill.

Sylvester Stallone might be getting ready to thrill audiences with Season 2 of his hit Paramount+ crime series Tulsa King, but a new report suggests the 78-year-old star is also getting ready to deliver more death-defying stunts in Cliffhanger 2, a sequel to the 1993 action-thriller that Stallone starred in alongside the likes of John Lithgow and Michael Rooker. Produced on a budget of $70 million, Cliffhanger grossed a worldwide total of $255 million, and was met with generally favorable reviews upon its debut, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including one for Best Visual Effects.
Per Screen Daily, Cliffhanger 2 is expected to start filming this fall after receiving a healthy infusion of cash from the Austrian film commission. Original director Renny Harlin will not be returning for the sequel, which will instead be helmed by Jean-Francois Richet, who was responsible for the 2005 remake of the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the films that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, as a sort of B-Side to our own recent Bruce Willis B-Side episode, we speak to screenwriter Daniel Waters about Hudson Hawk! And much, much, much more!
Daniel and I talk about the overnight success of Heathers getting made, the overnight failure of Hudson Hawk, followed by the complicated reaction to Batman Returns. Oh, and what about the three seashells in Demolition Man?
We also discuss Renny Harlin and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, that incredible Sandra Bullock performance, and his underseen directorial efforts (Happy Campers and Sex and Death 101).
Questions asked and answered include: what happened to all of the individual style in screenplays? Why does everybody save the cat these days? Is there a...

Renny Harlin hopes "for their own sake' that the team behind Cliffhanger 2 will shoot on real locations, which is crucial for authenticity, as digital effects can fall short of audience expectations. Sylvester Stallone will reprise the role of Gabe Walker from Harlin's Cliffhanger (1993) in the sequel. Ric Roman Waugh is directing the new Cliffhanger, focusing on the evolution of Sylvester Stallone's character alongside his daughter.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) was a life-changing event for The Strangers: Chapter 1s director, Renny Harlin. Robert Shaye of New Line Cinema took a chance on young Harlin when the producer hired the virtually unknown Finnish filmmaker for Nightmare 4. Flash forward five years, and Harlin is helming Cliffhanger starring Sylvester Stallone. And during an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Harlin was asked if he had any advice for the team behind the upcoming Cliffhanger sequel, which Ric Roman Waugh is attached to as director.

Daniel Waters' Catwoman script had a feminist perspective, challenging the objectification of women in comic books and society. The bizarre and absurd storyline of the screenplay included an amnesiac Selina Kyle living in a strange town and encountering an assortment of sexist characters. The script failed to create a coherent and entertaining story, lacking the madcap energy and humor needed to bring such absurb concepts to life.
Welcome to the 31st installment of Page One Rewrite, where I examine genre screenplays that just couldn't make it. This week, what could've been a Tim Burton Catwoman film, hobbled out of the gate by a truly bizarre script. And if you have any suggestions for the future, let me hear them. Just contact me on Twitter.
Following a recent screening of Batman Returns at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre, a discussion with co-writer Daniel Waters offered a series of provocative quotes regarding the screenwriter's history with the franchise.

Bridget Moynahan plays an important role as John Wick's deceased wife Helen, appearing through flashbacks and photographs. Moynahan's exceptional acting skills make her an integral and memorable part of the John Wick franchise. Besides her role in John Wick, Moynahan has had major roles in TV shows like Blue Bloods and Six Feet Under, as well as films like Coyote Ugly and Ford Fairlane.
Given how critical of a role Bridget Moynahan plays in the John Wick movies, it makes sense that there is interest in who brings the character to life. The thrilling franchise follows the titular character who is drawn back into the world of crime that he had previously turned his back on. In addition to making for exciting watches, the John Wick movies have proven an old sequel rule wrong as each one has managed to live up to the high expectations set by their predecessors.

Robert Englund is more than just a horror actor, as he has appeared in a variety of genres including dramas, thrillers, action movies, comedies, and even musical films. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is an action comedy with a film noir mystery twist, and while it may be loud and nasty, comedian Andrew Dice Clay's entertaining performance makes it worth watching for fans of crude humor. A Nightmare on Elm Street remains Englund's best film, showcasing his chilling performance as Freddy Krueger and cementing him as a horror icon. It is genuinely terrifying and grossed over $25 million worldwide.
Robert Englund is best known for his role as Freddy Krueger in the supernatural slasher franchise Nightmare on Elm Street, and the movies from that series dominate the list of his highest-grossing films. However, Englund has had a surprising amount of box office successes outside his most famous slasher film franchise.

With the release of the new tongue-in-cheek animal attack schlock comedy, Cocaine Bear, it’s a great time to revisit one of the most beloved “so bad, it’s good” shark attack movies. The 1999 film Deep Blue Sea is coveted for many reasons. Not only does it feature a notorious scene with star Samuel L. Jackson getting suddenly getting killed off by a CGI shark amidst an inspirational speech, but it also spawned perhaps the best rap song about sharks ever made by rapper and star LL Cool J.
According to ScreenRant, Ladies Love Cool James recently appeared on the latest episode of Hot Ones, the popular talk show from First We Feast that features celebrity guests eating progressively hotter chicken wings as they get interviewed. During the program, as his tongue got destroyed by the sauces, LL recalled a moment filming the shark movie where he nearly drowned due to the mechanical shark.

How do you follow up an action classic? That had to be the question on director Renny Harlin’s mind when he signed up to direct Die Hard 2: Die Harder for 20th Century Fox and producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon. 1988’s Die Hard was a smash hit beyond anyone’s expectations. Overnight, it turned Bruce Willis, who was then a TV star on Moonlighting, into the next action icon. One movie was all it took to make him one of the three biggest action stars of the era. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis – they were the guys, and Die Hard was the movie responsible for launching Willis into superstardom. But how would they follow it up?
Launching a sequel wasn’t exactly a piece of cake, with director John McTiernan opting out of the series (temporarily) to direct The Hunt for Red October (itself an action classic). In his place,...

Since 1980, UCLA film grads and industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy have honored the very worst in cinema with the Razzie Awards. Here’s a look back to the worst pictures of the last four decades.
“Can’t Stop the Music” (1980)
The Golden Raspberry Awards got their start by recognizing this musical comedy, a justly mocked quasi-biopic of the Village People.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 8%
“Mommie Dearest” (1981)
Faye Dunaway goes full camp as Joan Crawford in a docudrama whose comedy was often unintentional.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 53%
“Inchon” (1982)
This bloated, over-budget Korean war film starring Laurence Olivier as Gen. Douglas MacArthur was an epic turkey.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 0%
“The Lonely Lady” (1983)
Pia Zadora followed her mysterious (and widely mocked in retrospect) Golden Globe win for “Butterfly” with this adaptation of a trashy Harold Robbins novel about a schoolgirl/wannabe screenwriter.

Today, Conor and I are honored to have a filmmaker who gave us some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of all time: Renny Harlin! The Finnish director has a new film out called The Misfits, starring Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, and Jamie Chung. Our B-Sides include Harlin’s first film Born American, his Andrew Dice Clay-starrer The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and the much-maligned, underrated pirate adventure Cutthroat Island.
Harlin is a very honest and open guest here, and we touch on many different moments throughout his accomplished and eclectic career. From the struggles and risks of getting Born American made, to the lessons learned on hits like Cliffhanger, and the cultural appraisal of films like Ford Fairlane and Cutthroat.

Renny Harlin stands as one of my favorite action directors of all time. One of the kings of nineties Hollywood action flicks, his filmography is insane, with him having shot The Adventures of Ford Fairlane and Die Hard 2 back to back. He went on to make Cliffhanger and two forward-thinking, underrated cult classics starring his then-wife Geena Davis, Cutthroat Island, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. I was excited when the opportunity came up to talk to him about his latest film, a globe-trotting heist…...

Motley Crue's Vince Neil originally had a part in 1989's Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. However, the cameo was later left on the cutting room floor for reasons that remain to be unclear. Neil was/is not known for his acting chops, but director Peter Bonerz saw some potential in him, especially his 1980s metal look. While the scene was cut, it has been circulating online, along with some behind-the-scenes footage, for quite a while and it's always worth revisiting for its pure 1980s goodness.
Police Academy 6 was not the best-received of the franchise, so maybe Vince Neil dodged a bullet. At the time, he was kind of bummed that his scene was taken out, which is understandable. In the behind-the-scenes footage, director Peter Bonerz talks about getting Neil involved in the process. When asked about the Motley Crue front man's acting abilities, the director said, "I don't know.

When it comes to Michael Lehmann’s Heathers, there are a myriad of reasons why the brutally dark comedy works as well as it does, and has more than earned its cult film status over the last three decades, but probably one of its greatest assets is the film’s razor-sharp script penned by a then up-and-coming screenwriter Daniel Waters. And while he had always been fueled by his love of cinema, Waters didn’t initially set out to write screenplays in Hollywood.
“Originally, I wanted to be a film critic because I love movies so much,” Daniel explained. “But what I began to realize was that when it came to the movies that were coming out during the ’80s, I just felt like the movies of the ’70s were much better. Also, I was obsessed with the films of Stanley Kubrick, who directed these completely cold and clinical, but brilliant dark comedies like Dr.

Many of us grew up watching Renny Harlin’s action movies like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. It would be several more years before Jackie Chan was properly introduced to America with the U.S. release of Rumble in the Bronx. The two represent quite different approaches to action, with Harlin embodying the […]

Many in Hollywood pair Suzanne Todd with her younger sister and producing partner Jennifer, long known as Team Todd. They produced a raft of movies together, many at freewheeling New Line Cinema, including teen coming-of-age classic “Now and Then” and Mike Meyers’ Austin Powers franchise. They also put on the map Christopher Nolan (“Memento”) and Ben Younger (“Boiler Room”). And while they both produced Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” with Joe Roth at Disney, for its sequel “Through the Looking Glass,” Jennifer was busy running Pearl Street Films, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, while Suzanne carried on with the “Alice” sequel. And so she went solo on “Bad Moms,” which Stx opened well this weekend.

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

It has been twenty years since the Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes-led sci-fi thriller "Demolition Man" hit cinemas. Looking back on it though, the one thing that most people remember is a visual gag - the three sea shells.
For those who haven't seen the film, Stallone's character is a cop who is put into cryostasis and awakens several decades into the future. When he uses a public toilet for the first time, he discovers there is no toilet paper - only three sea shells on one side.
He doesn't know how to use them, a fact that makes everyone else highly amused. To this day it's still not known how they work (two for clamping, one for scraping?), and the film's writer Daniel Waters isn't going to say.
At a recent Q&A for the 25th anniversary screening for "The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane" in Los Angeles though,...

It's not quite a mystery solved, but screenwriter Daniel Waters once explained where Demolition Man's three sea shells came from...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
There's an argument that suggests the closest Sylvester Stallone ever really came to playing Judge Dredd wasn't in the 1995 film of the same name, but in his earlier sci-fi action film, Demolition Man. It's not a brilliant argument, but it's an argument nonetheless.
We've had an awful lot of time since Demolition Man, which co-starred Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and the late Nigel Hawthorne. But one of the residing mysteries of it centers on, well, is the toilet. More specifically, the three sea shells that have replaced toilet paper in the future.
Whilst we're no closer to working out how the three sea shells work, we do now know where the idea came from. They were the creation of screenwriter Daniel Waters,...

In the 1993 science fiction action film Demolition Man, Lapd Sgt., John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) is put into a cryogenic prison in 1996 when he's falsely accused of manslaugther. He is later awoken in 2032 and reinstated into the police force so that he can help ill-equipped cops of the future apprehend psychopathic career criminal Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes). The best scenes in the film have to do with Spartan adjusting to this new futuristic environment. In it, Taco Bell (Pizza Hut for some international markets) has won the "Franchise Wars" and is the last remaining chain restaurant, Arnold Schwarzenegger was (at one time) President of the United States of America, and they replaced toilet paper with Three Seashells! This past weekend at The Egyptian in Hollywood, there was a screening of The Adventures of Ford Fairlane in advance of the film's 25th Anniversary. Screenwriter Daniel Waters was one of the guest...

There was a time, probably much shorter than we actually remember, when Renny Harlin was sort of a big deal in Hollywood. But for every "Die Hard 2" or "Deep Blue Sea," he would also drop stuff like "The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane" or "Mindhunters," and pretty soon the crap was outweighing the enjoyable schlock until he's now helming stuff like January's Doa "The Legend Of Hercules." But, never one to quit, he's got another gig lined up. Harlin will helm "Fallen Cross," with filming to start at the end of the year. Penned by David Christopher O'Neill, the story "centers on Timothy Cole, a reformed ex-mafia enforcer who is in a desperate struggle to protect his family from the crime syndicate he once served, the Chicago Cross. But first he must find a way to escape the confines of prison and return to his ruthless killer ways to cut...

The "Twilight" saga might be over (for now), but that doesn't mean that the movie theaters will be free from swoony young vampires falling in love. Come Valentine's Day, "Vampire Academy," based on the young adult novel by Richelle Mead, will show its fangs -- and if the new trailer is any indication, it promises to be wicked good fun, and a lot less sparkly.
While the plot of "Vampire Academy" isn't even hinted at, it does look pretty cool: Basically it's about a high school exclusively for creatures of the night. Zoey Deutch, who also starred in supernatural young adult adaptation "Beautiful Creatures" (and is the daughter of Lea Thompson and John Hughes surrogate Howard Deutch), leads the cast of pretty young things, with actors like Gabriel Byrne and Olga Kurylenko (as the principal) in the adult roles.
But more exciting than the on-screen talent is the creative team behind the movie.

Finnish director Renny Harlin, the maker of Die Hard 2 and The Long Kiss Goodnight, has now decided to tackle one of the eeriest mysteries in Russian history. Here he explains why
'Oh, you'll have fun with Renny," says his assistant as I'm ushered into his office in Venice, Los Angeles, three blocks from where Orson Welles filmed the opening sequence of Touch of Evil. "He's been doing his homework on you."
My mind fills with horrifying possibilities, recalling how Don Simpson would have a journalist's credit rating, divorce papers, and even criminal record to hand for an interview. But Finland's most successful director simply appears before me with a grin and says: "Hello, John, I very much enjoyed your – " and he quotes something I wrote a month back. "I laughed all day!" he adds.

Red-hot stand-up comics don.t always translate to the big screen, despite the industry.s insistence on trying to find the right vehicles for their talents. Sometimes you hit it out of the park and get Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School. Other times you get Andrew .Dice. Clay in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Chris Rock is one of those guys who has fallen somewhere in the middle. He.s a brilliant stand-up comic . possibly the best working stand-up at the moment . but his film career has been touch and go. Things are a little sketchier when he directs, as his first two efforts (Head of State and I Think I Love My Wife) have had limited success. Rock.s hoping the third time will be the charm, however, and he.s opening up a casting call for actors to join him on a spring shoot. Showbiz411 says Rock...

As we talked about a month ago, White Collar season 4 is just about ready to rock and star Matt Bomer has been tearing up the track lately. As the dedicated fans likely already know, the season 3 finale saw Bomer’s character, Neal, along with his toady Mozzie (well played by Willie Garson), make good his escape from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As season 4 opens, we find Neal and Mozzie drinking in the lush beauty and fruity alcoholic beverages of a tropical island. The Hollywood Reporter brings us this clip from the opening episode:
So we see the standard White Collar quasi-cutesy back-n-forth dialogue is still well intact. Also, a bit of digging around on the ol’ internet has revealed to me (!!potential spoilers!!) that this elusive Dobbs will be played by none other than Gregg Henry. Louis C.K. and Andrew Dice Clay have joined Woody Allen's upcoming film, reports Variety. Shot in New York and San Francisco, the Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum film has already cast Max Casella and Alden Ehrenreich. This comes after Lost's Michael Emerson was recently cast in the untitled film, joining a cast including Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannacale and Bradley Cooper. Dice Clay, an eighties-popular comedian who is certainly not for everyone, but still has a strong fan base, and also called "The Diceman," is known mostly for The Adventures of Ford Fairlane back in 1990.

The good, the bad, and the blockbusters … whatever you've seen recently, we'd like to hear about it
What films have you seen recently? Whatever you've been watching, we'd like you to tell us about it.
You can either leave a comment in the thread below, or tweet your thoughts with the hashtag #gdnreview. We'll pick the best and show them off here once a week.
Here's what some @guardianfilm followers had to say about recent films they'd seen:
@bexter2001
Damsels in Distress: witty, whimsical and deeply offbeat, it grew on me, mainly thanks to the wonderful Greta Gerwig
@StephWhalley
Sticky sweet & naughty with lashings of humour & a sprinkling of nineties nostalgia: everything an American Pie Reunion should be!
@RedAppleChango
Lockout: Ott action sci-fi. Very 90s vibe, in a good way. See if you like Timecop or Sudden Death (who doesn't?)
@hannah_echo
Drive. Beautiful aesthetics and faux-retro sound juxtaposed...

If you’re planning to see the Broadway adaptation of Once (which opens at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Mar. 18), I’ve already spoiled something for you: the moment when you say to yourself, “Oh my God, that’s the bad guy from The Warriors up on stage.” Yep, the man who said the oft-quoted “Warriors, come out to play-ay” is in a musical—singing, dancing, strumming the mandolin (Once’s cast is also its orchestra) and play-ay-ing the father of the guitar-playing hero.
For David Patrick Kelly, rocking a mandolin on Broadway is actually the most natural thing in the world.

Earlier today the folks over at EatSleepLiveFilm put up a list of what they called the ’100 Best Films of the 80s’ and whilst their list was full of awesome films – covering a plethora of genres and touching base on a number of the decades best and most-loved movies – upon reading it, and as a 80s aficionado, I found there to be quite a few glaring omissions. Hence this “rebuttal” – a list of 50 films (in no particular order) that Didn’T make Eslf’s Top 100 that I think are some of the best of the 80s, including some that might surprise you…

Every two weeks I’m going to be posting a cult movie of the week. This could be a truly cult film (like this one), a forgotten film or a foreign film that I’d like to share.
The first cult movie of the week honors goes to The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, starring Andrew Dice Clay. I almost went with Brain Smasher… A Love Story, but Ford Fairlane is so far out of the mainstream it deserved the initial nod.
Story revolves around Ford “Mr. Rock n’ Roll Detective” Fairlane. He is experiencing problems, and it’s not with the opposite sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drum sticks, koala bears, food processors and bicycle shorts. Things really get hectic when he is hired to find a girl named Zuzu Petals, who turns up dead.

The filmed works of David Fincher aren't limited to the cinema. In fact, Fincher has made more music videos and commercials than he has movies and today I've decided to highlight a selection of Fincher's music videos from those that will have you nodding your head saying, "Yup, that looks like something Fincher would have directed," and others that will have you saying, "What? Really? The guy that made Zodiac, Seven and Fight Club made that?" I did my best to find a few quotes for some of the videos, a few facts on others and I can also suggest you look for the likes of Djimon Hounsou in Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", Christopher Walken in Madonna's "Bad Girl" and you can also find supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford in the video for George Michael's "Freedom!

Renny Harlin still knows how to blow stuff up real good. He's always been less a popcorn filmmaker than a Cracker Jack entertainer, rarely content to leave a scene alone without adding unnecessary ingredients to sweeten and / or salt the deal. It delivered him from sequel hell in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, which led to the big-budget insanity of Die Hard 2. It helped him survive The Adventures of Ford Fairlane and Cutthroat Island, so that they recede into indistinct memory as the cheesy, indulgent, thrilling excesses of Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea are remembered more fondly. Over the last decade, however, Harlin's track record has become more suspect, even for those with a...

You might think that the MTV Video Music Awards are all about music, or more specifically, music videos. But throughout the past 17 years, there have been plenty of movie-related moments that have broken up the many Madonna performances, "Moonman" award upsets and general Vma revelry.
After all, you can't pack an auditorium full of the entertainment industry's most talented performers and not expect some big-screen brilliance. (We're already anticipating one big movie moment at this Sunday's show. Two words: "Hunger Games.")
In celebration of this year's ceremony and the big-screen moments that it will certainly bring, we've compiled the nine best movie-related Vma moments (ever!) for your enjoyment.

Wayne Newton brings his persona to Jimmy Ten-Strings in Hoodwinked Too!
This Tuesday, August 16th, the hit animated comedy adventure Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil will be coming to 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. This sequel to the 2005 classic Hoodwinked finds our heroine Red (Hayden Panettiere) training with a mysterious covert group called the Sisters of the Hood when she is called upon to rescue two innocent children, Hansel and Gretel, that have been kidnapped by a ruthless, wicked witch.
In the movie, Wayne Newton assumes the role of a singing golden harp named Jimmy Ten-Strings. Like his real-life Las Vegas alter ego, Jimmy, too, is the star attraction at a swanky Club in Big City. And he certainly bares a canny resemblance to the iconic lounge singer.
