When the execs at production company Tomorrow Studios were talking to people about producing a TV adaptation of Alafair Burke’s The Better Sister, they would ask prospective partners after reading the first episode who they thought was behind the story’s central murder mystery of who killed Adam Macintosh, played in the Prime Video limited series by Corey Stoll.

“People had different answers,” Tomorrow Studios president and Better Sister executive producer Becky Clements told The Hollywood Reporter at The Better Sister‘s New York premiere last month. “And for us that was perfect, because you wouldn’t be able to predict.”

Even the Better Sister actors were surprised when they learned who did it, despite helping to realize the narrative.

In the latest murder-mystery limited drama series, estranged sisters, played by Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, put their pasts on hold to handle a bigger dilemma: a murder.

“The Better Sister,” based on the bestselling novel of the same name, premiered on Prime Video Thursday. When Chloe (Biel) finds her partner Adam in a pool of his own blood in their Hamptons house, her life turns upside down. She is forced to reunite with her estranged sister Nicky (Banks), who happens to be Adam’s ex-wife. This messy situation is heightened by the fact that Chloe and her adoptive son Ethan, who is also Nicky’s biological son, are the prime suspects in the murder case.

In addition to starring in the limited series, Biel and Banks executive produced, alongside showrunners Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado for Tomorrow Studios.

Prime Video released the trailer for its upcoming series The Better Sister starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, this morning.

“My husband has been murdered, and my sister is here,” Biel’s Chloe says at the beginning of the clip. “And though I am feeling anxiety about this, I release it.”

This mantra, accompanied with a facial tapping technique, is interspersed with a shot of Chloe Taylor’s husband Adam Macintosh (Corey Stoll) at a fancy gala of some sort applauding her as she receives an award or some kind of recognition. Banks’ Nicky Macintosh is also seen wandering Chloe’s house. An anguished Chloe bending over her kitchen sink does not affirm the release of all this tension she has just dictated.

The trailer only gets twistier as Chloe’s discovery of her dead husband unfolds, leading to her taking mugshots in a white dress smothered in blood.
