Plays Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" musical by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, A.R. Rahman, Värttinä, Christopher Nightingale, based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien (Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada).
In his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 1993 Tony Awards, he thanked "my dear, dear Susan - this is for you. And I can say, death be not proud!". In a later interview with the New York Times, Carver said he was referring to his friend, actress Susan Wright, who had died along with her parents in a fire at Carver's Stratford Ontario home in 1991.
