Why Only One Seinfeld Episode Cut Away From Jerry's Stand-Up Scene
Image
If you're tuning into an episode of "Seinfeld," you can generally expect its agents of chaos to get into all manner of bad behavior. They don't really care what they do to other people unless it somehow involves implicating themselves, which goes against the traditional sitcom formula. It's not exactly like "Seinfeld" to take a moral stance by the end of an episode, as most of them conclude with no one learning a lesson from the mess they made.

In the season 3 episode "The Red Dot," for example, the central conflict centers around George looking to get a gift for Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) as a thank you for getting him a job at the publishing company she works at. Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) joins his double chip dipper friend to the store, where they find a beautiful cashmere sweater. The catch is that it's heavily discounted because of a small red dot.

10 Best Twilight Zone Episodes From the '80s, Ranked
Image
Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone is one of the most enduring television classics of all time. In its anthology format of supernatural thrillers, the series delivers with an ironic twist and a healthy dose of social conscience, which transcends the era they were produced to become evergreen classics. Multiple reboot series have come and gone over the years, none of which have been able to capture lightning in a bottle the way the original series did. The most ambitious was likely the first, starting in 1985 and lasting for three seasons. That first reboot made a real effort to update Serling's vision without losing what made it so special.

Whether it succeeded, there's a telling moment in the opening credits that speaks volumes: a flash of Serling's profile that comes and goes just before the title card appears. The 1980s Twilight Zone feels very much like that sometimes, delivering just...

‘Werewolves’ Review: Frank Grillo in an Extremely Basic Lean-and-Mean Werewolf-as-Zombie Movie
Image
“Werewolves” is your basic, everyday lean-and-mean dystopian werewolf-as-zombie action thriller, with elements lifted from the pandemic and the “Purge” films. It’s not a good movie, but it’s a tight little time passer. Frank Grillo, who’s at the center of it (playing a ripped bruiser who is also…a molecular biologist!), has a way of making any pulp movie better. He’s like a brainy Charles Bronson. And the plot is simplicity itself, and efficiency too: On the night of a supermoon (that’s when the full moon comes closest to Earth), people all over the globe are transformed into towering werewolves if they look at the moon for so much as one second. Talk about a good reason to stay home and stream something.

How are the werewolves? Cheesy in a fun way. As in self-consciously old-fashioned, or maybe just lavishly threadbare. A lot of people now...

Werewolves, Not Swear-Wolves: When the Werewolf Movie Meets the Horror-Comedy
Image
Presented by Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, Bloody Disgusting is looking to the stars and howling at the moon with Werewolves Week. Today, Jenn Adams takes a look at the funny side of the werewolf sub-genre: the hairy horror-comedy.

The act of becoming a werewolf is deadly serious—arguably horror’s most painful mutation. The body writhes and screams while elongating and sprouting fur. Claws appear where fingernails once were and the face becomes an animal-like snout equipped with whiskers, fur, and gnashing fangs. Given the screaming poor souls we see undergo this transformation, it’s safe to say the process hurts. So why then are so many modern werewolf movies played for laughs?

Yes, some entries in this curious subgenre are quite dramatic, examining the duality of man or female sexuality, but other titles are among the genre’s most beloved and successful horror comedies. Like peanut butter and chocolate,...

14 Sitcom Theme Songs That Hit the Billboard Charts
Image
At least 50 TV theme songs have hit the charts, according to Billboard, including 14 from television comedies. There are some surprises on this list, though, so crank up the speakers and rock out to these laugh-track-fueled jams.

1 “The Ballad of Jed Clampett”

Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs spent three weeks at #1 on the country charts with the theme from The Beverly Hillbillies.

2 “Welcome Back”

Lovin’ Spoonful frontman John Sebastian wrote and recorded the Welcome Back, Kotter theme, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 1976. Inexplicably, it also reached No. 93 on the country chart.

3 “Those Were the Days”

Sung by the show’s stars, a longer version of the All in the Family theme song hit #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #30 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in early 1972.

4 “Happy Days”

While Happy Days originally used “Rock Around the Clock” as its theme, it was replaced by the made-for-the-show song “Happy Days.

Wolf Man Producer Comments on Christopher Abbott Replacing Ryan Gosling
Image
We spoke to Blumhouse producer Beatriz Sequeira leading up to the release of Speak No Evil, a buzzy new psychological thriller that is being especially praised for the reliably superb James McAvoy's performance. It hits theaters tomorrow, Sep. 13, and Sequeira who serves as executive producer on the film has been keeping busy with other highly anticipated projects by Blumhouse, such as Wolf Man, starring Christopher Abbott in the eponymous role. Originally, Ryan Gosling was set to play the iconic character, and ironically, Abbott and Gosling have starred together in a big film (First Man). Sequeira weighed in on the change:

"To be perfectly honest, I think it's just one of those things that the movie evolves. And, you know, we have an incredible version with [director] Leigh [Whannell] and Chris and Julia Gardner. And I think that's what we need to focus on. This is the movie, and it's coming out...

Now we’re checking off another classic with John Landis‘ 1981 werewolf film, An American Werewolf in London. In the film, American best friends David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) are horrifically attacked while backpacking through the UK Moors. On the cusp of his release, the mangled corpse of Jack visits David, warning that on the full moon he will become a lycanthrope unless he kills himself. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.

For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

The Bizarre Direct-To-Video Horror Film That Launched Mark Ruffalo's Career
Image
On a recent episode of "Hot Ones," actor Mark Rufflao was invited on to discuss his career while chocking down incredibly spicy hot wings. Sean Evans, the show's host, read a film synopsis to Ruffalo and asked if he could identify the title. Evans read a synopsis for a 1994 film called "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," a straight-to-video horror film put out by the beloved B-movie studio Image Entertainment. Ruffalo, of course, could indeed identify the movie. "That's 'Mirror Mirror,'" he said. "That was probably my first movie." Indeed it was.

Ruffalo pointed out that there was "Mirror, Mirror" and then there was "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," which had a "Penthouse pornstar" as the lead actress and Billy Drago as the male lead. He noted that he played "the series actor sidekick." He joked that he had established a brand with the "Mirror Mirror" movies, sarcastically imitating...

Is The Royal Hotel Scary?
Image
A car traveling down a lonely road sets the stage for horror expectations, as seen in films like The Shining and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Royal Hotel, an isolated residence in Australia, fits the conventions of familiar horror scenarios. The film explores the uncomfortable experiences of two American backpackers working as bartenders in a creepy bar filled with suspicious characters.

A car traveling down a lonely road is such a familiar opening for the horror genre that it holds the power to set our expectations instantly. Some of the genre's classics have forged the shot into the annals of horror convention – The Shining, The Evil Dead, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre have all played their parts. The car's destination tends to be an even more common convention – an isolated residence of some description where our characters will meet the horror itself, whatever that is. From that vague description, The Royal Hotel fits right in.

Horror Movies That Should've Been Rated R
Image
In World Wrestling Entertainment, the period from July 22, 2008, to March 22, 2014, remains known as the "PG era," owing to how Vince McMahon adjusted the content to achieve a TV-pg rating after the TV-14 fare in the so-called "Attitude" and "Relentless Aggression" eras of the 1990s and early-to-mid 2000s. (via Sportscaster)

WWE had caught up with Hollywood, where a similar wave of chlorine had washed over mainstream cinema and sanitized dozens of projects including "Live Free or Die Hard," "Terminator Salvation," "Hancock," and "Fired Up." These films and many more were stripped of violence, swearing, and sexuality in order for the MPA to grant the studios a PG-13 rating and access to the lucrative teen demographic. Such money-mindedness proved bad enough for the action and comedy genres, but it was arguably even worse for horror filmmakers, who risked self-censorship unless they worked within the thriving "torture porn" fare of "Saw" and "Hostel.

An American Werewolf in London video puts Elmer Bernstein’s rejected music over transformation scene
Image
Writer/director John Landis always intended to use Sam Cooke’s version of the song “Blue Moon” over the famous transformation scene in his 1981 classic An American Werewolf in London (watch it Here), and he let the film’s composer Elmer Bernstein know that up front. He chose “Blue Moon” because he wanted the scene to come off as being sad and painful rather than scary – but while putting together the score for the film, Bernstein decided to go ahead and compose some of his own music for the transformation scene. Just in case. Landis ended up rejecting Bernstein’s transformation music and stuck with “Blue Moon”… but now filmmaker Paul Davis, who generously shared 35 minutes of rare outtake footage from The Exorcist on Halloween this year, has put Bernstein’s rejected music over the transformation scene and uploaded it to YouTube. You can check it out in the embed...

An American Werewolf in London's legendary werewolf effects by Rick Baker have made it a horror classic and continue to inspire creative people today. Baker's practical effects in the film are considered the crowning achievement of his career and have shaped the history of the horror genre. Baker's work extended beyond the werewolf genre, with his talents being sought after for other classic films and prestigious productions.

Stunning An American Werewolf in London cosplay pays homage to the horror classic’s legendary werewolf transformation effects. The werewolf movie was considered the stuff of old Hollywood when, in 1981, John Landis helped spur a revival of the genre with his London-set horror-comedy starring David Naughton as a man who is bitten by a wolf, and transforms into a beast with the coming of the full moon. Along with a witty script, the hit film featured groundbreaking and highly-influential pre-cgi transformation effects from the iconic Rick Baker.

An American Werewolf In London's Lore: Werewolf Bite Effect, Death Curse & Bloodline Explained
Image
An American Werewolf in London introduces its own unique werewolf mythology, including a death curse, the quest to vanquish a bloodline, and the possibility of being stuck in werewolf limbo. If a human survives a werewolf attack in the movie, they will transform into a werewolf themselves at the first sign of a full moon. The only way for the lost souls in limbo to be free is for them to end the werewolf's bloodline, which requires killing the werewolf or themselves. Only then can their souls be at peace.

John Landis’ An American Werewolf in London is one of the greatest – and funniest – werewolf movies ever made, with its own werewolf lore involving a death curse and a broken bloodline. An American Werewolf in London stars David Naughton and Griffin Dunne as David and Jack, respectively, two American backpackers who encounter a bloodthirsty werewolf in the English countryside. Although Jack is killed,...

Stars: Shelley Regner, Diane Franklin, Jamison Newlander, Kelly Leon Guerrero, David Naughton, Brian Tyler Cohen, Ryan Bonnick, Yan Birch, Helene Udy | Written by Brian Farmer | Directed by Brian Farmer, Steve Craig

Waking Nightmare begins appropriately enough with Jordan waking up screaming from a nightmare. This has been a regular occurrence since her best friend Jamie killed herself. It’s gotten bad enough that she’s moved back home with her parents Danielle and Jeff.

A visit from her best friend Zoey seems to cheer her up, but that night her nightmares turn into sleepwalking, and while doing that she pulls a knife on her mother. This gets her an appointment with Dr. Doolin who gives her a prescription for Ambien.

The Ambien doesn’t make her start posting racist comments on Twitter, but it doesn’t stop her sleepwalking either. In fact, she ends up walking out of the house...

‘Amityville: A New Generation’ Offers Exceptional Cinematography and Amusing Dialogue [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

Last editorial, I pondered if the best films in the Amityville Horror franchise are the paired entries. As we cross off the seventh entry, that suspicion holds true. Amityville: A New Generation has decent ambition for a franchise creeping towards double digits; it simply needed a few tweaks in its execution. At the end of the day, the film feels aggressively early 90s direct-to-video horror, slightly better than something like a mid-range Candyman or Hellraiser.

The 1993 film is set in an apartment complex whose residents are an artist collective. The film uses the same formula as The Amityville Curse for its characters (a combination of lovers and friends), as well as It’s About Time and 3-D (a new haunted object). In this case,...

15 Great Horror Comedy Movies to Watch After ‘M3GAN’ (And Where to Stream Them)
Image
Chances are if you rushed out to see “M3GAN” you were intoxicated by its mixture of horror and comedy and probably want more like it.

“M3GAN” is the story of a disaffected roboticist (played by Allison Williams) who supplies her recently orphaned niece (Violet McGraw) with a robotic companion instead of actually, you know, putting in the work to make sure the grieving process isn’t so chaotic. The results are a killer robot/killer doll movie that puts as much emphasis on laughs as it does on thrills.

And if “M3GAN” really revved your motor and you want more from this particular sub-genre, well, we’ve got you covered. Here are 15 other great horror comedy movies to watch after you’ve unplugged from “M3GAN:”

The Meaning Behind Those Weird Disney Shots In An American Werewolf In London
Image
If you pay close attention to the background of John Landis' innovative 1981 horror-comedy "An American Werewolf in London," you will notice there are numerous Disney-related items placed throughout the character Alex's (Jenny Agutter) apartment. Indeed, she has Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck figurines in her living room, along with a poster of Mickey Mouse adorning her hallway.

Landis carefully and deliberately moves the camera to include these Disney figures in the film's shots, often placing them alongside the main characters in such a way that it draws attention away from the latter. There's even a scene where leads David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) walk through Alex's hallway and Jack stops to smell a flower, only for the camera to suddenly shift so as to bring Alex's Mickey Mouse picture into the frame. When David looks at Alex's television, there is likewise a Minnie Mouse statue coyly smiling on top of it.

The Guts and Gore of ‘Terrifier 2’ Deserve Your Makeup Awards Attention
Image
The Academy Award for Best Makeup (which added Hairstyling in 1993) has only been around, in earnest, since 1981. That year, macabre special effects genius Rick Baker won for transforming David Naughton into a grotesquely hirsute lycanthrope for “American Werewolf in London.” In that same decade, Chris Walas and Stephan Dupuis won for turning Jeff Goldblum into the sticky, disgusting Brundlefly for David Cronenberg’s “The Fly.”

Save for a handful of gruesome gothics like “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” — both prioritizing practical effects over digital — winners in this category can be awards bait (“Bombshell”), fantasy franchise entries, or the rare original auteur vision (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”). And there have been major short shrifts, such as John Carpenter’s “The Thing” not landing a nomination in 1982 for its human-alien chimeras courtesy of Rob Bottin.

In short, the Academy tends to shy away from hardcore genre movies that test audience’s limits,...

Great Horror Comedy Movies to Watch After Barbarian
Zach Cregger
Zach Cregger’s Barbarian is one of the surprise horror hits of the year. Combining wicked twists, an unorthodox structure, and a dash of good humor, Barbarian became a word-of-mouth hit that’s now finding an even wider audience thanks to streaming on HBO Max. Fun, but still unsettling at times, Barbarian strikes a campy horror tone that’s both refreshingly irreverent and also cinematically satisfying.

With Spooky Season heading to a close, and Halloween right around the corner, you might be looking for more films that scratch this camp horror itch. If you’re looking for self-serious horror films, this isn’t the list for you. But if you’re looking for something that inspires laughter while you’re watching through the cracks in your fingers, something decidedly Barbarian-esque, check out these creepy classics below.

How Dr Pepper Helped Land David Naughton His Role In An American Werewolf In London
Image
John Landis' 1981 classic "An American Werewolf in London" is one of the most revered horror-comedies ever, standing on the shoulders of the goofy "Abbott and Costello Meet..." film series and leaning into the natural absurdities of one of the horror genre's most overt manifestations of man's duality. Casting the lead roles of doomed Americans David Kessler and Jack Goodman was of paramount importance; the movie was conceived as homage to "The Wolf Man," after all. The suits at Universal initially wanted SNL alum and "Blues Brothers" stars Dan Akroyd and John Belushi to lead, but Landis went with unknowns David Naughton and Griffin Dunne instead.

An ordinary casting process might include screen tests and further evaluations of the actor, but the way Naughton told it to journalist Sandy Auden, one meeting with the "Animal House" director was all it took to land the role of the doomed backpacker. He describes...

Keep your warm-colored lights and green pine trees. For some of us, October is the most wonderful time of the year. You can smell it as autumnal leaves drifting across the grass; you can hear it as children laugh in their most beloved Halloween costumes; and you can see it with the cornucopia of horror movies to watch.

Aye, horror flicks are the most important part of the season to some. For 31 days, you don’t need an excuse to indulge in the wicked and the weird, and to hopefully scare yourself silly. But in an age of streaming, and when countless mounds of content is being thrown at you, how do you decide what to watch? Well, at least when it comes to Amazon Prime Video, we have a few ideas…

An American Werewolf In London Traces Its Roots To A 1940s Monster Movie Classic
Image
41 years after its release in theaters, John Landis' "An American Werewolf in London" seems nearly as modern today as it did in 1981. That's partly because the script wasn't even a product of its own time — Landis came up with the idea in the late '60s, while working on "Kelly's Heroes" as a Pa in Yugoslavia. After witnessing a "gypsy funeral," the 18-year-old Landis was taken with the clash between his so-called civilized background and the fervent belief in superstition and the supernatural he witnessed at the funeral.

As the young Landis began his directing career in earnest during the '70s, he kept trying to get "American Werewolf" made, to no avail. Not only was this due to his relative inexperience early in his career, but people who read the "Werewolf" script were confused by its blend of humor and horror.

To be sure, that blend may have been...

Rebecca Balding, the energetic actress who appeared opposite Billy Crystal on Soap and portrayed Alyssa Milano’s newspaper boss on Charmed, has died. She was 73.

Balding died Monday in Park City after a battle with ovarian cancer, her husband of 41 years, writer-director-producer James L. Conway, announced.

Balding also starred in the horror films The Silent Scream (1979) and the Conway-directed The Boogens (1981). They first met during her audition.

Conway was a producer on The WB’s Charmed when his wife portrayed Elise Rothman, editor-in-chief of The Bay Mirror, where Milano’s Phoebe Halliwell worked as an advice columnist. She appeared on 22 episodes during the last five seasons (2002-06) of the supernatural series.

On the ABC sitcom Soap, Balding recurred as attorney Carol David, who seduces Crystal’s openly gay Jodie Dallas and becomes pregnant. When he decides to “do the right thing” and marry her,...

Will ‘Dune’ continue the Oscars’ long history of celebrating sci-fi/fantasy makeup and hairstyling
Image
Gold Derby odds-makers are betting on Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” to clean up in the below-the-line categories – as of this writing it’s projected for six wins! – but one category where it might have some stiff competition is Best Makeup and Hairstyling. As I noted in my previous piece about the category, transforming actors for biopics has often led to Oscar gold, and yet there’s also plenty of historical precedent for the academy to pick a fantasy or science-fiction epic like “Dune,” which features exemplary work by Donald Mowat and his team of artists and stylists.

This year the Makeup category turns 40 years old, with hairstylists added as award recipients in 1993, and then hairstyling was added to the name of the category in 2012. But the very first competitive winner in the category, after a couple honorary awards (for 1964’s “7 Faces of Dr. Lao” and 1968’s “Planet of the Apes...

An American Werewolf in London 40th Anniversary Celebrated by Fans
Image
Horror fans are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the genre favorite An American Werewolf in London. Written and directed by John Landis, the movie premiered on the big screen on Aug. 21, 1981, to great success at the box office. It was also a hit with critics and won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film that year. Over the past four decades, the cult classic is still highly revered and widely considered to be one of the greatest werewolf movies ever made.

The synopsis for the movie reads: "David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne), two American college students, are backpacking through Britain when a large wolf attacks them. David survives with a bite, but Jack is brutally killed. As David heals in the hospital, he's plagued by violent nightmares of his mutilated friend, who warns David that he is becoming a werewolf. Arrow Video’s March 2021 Blu-ray Releases Include The Invisible Man Appears / The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly Double Feature
Image
Arrow Video will continue to bring an eclectic range of films to Blu-ray in 2021, with their March releases including a double feature Blu-ray of The Invisible Man Appears / The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly, Patrick Picard's The Bloodhound (a new take on Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Fall of the House of Usher"), and a limited edition steelbook of An American Werewolf in London.

The Invisible Man Appears / The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly Blu-ray: "Finally released outside Japan for the very first time, these unique riffs on H.G. Wells’ classic character (though undoubtedly also indebted to Universal’s iconic film series) are two of the earliest examples of tokusatsu (special effects) cinema from Daiei Studios, later the home of Gamera.

How Demi Lovato Was Convinced To Cameo In Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga
Image
An unexpected current hit on Netflix is Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, a musical comedy about a pair of struggling Icelandic musicians determined to be the country’s pick for the titular pan-continental singing competition. One of its most memorable aspects was a cameo appearance from Demi Lovato, and even more surprising was what convinced her to take part.

In the film, Lovato plays Katiana Lindsdóttir, a talented and glamorous singer whose selection to represent the island nation is pretty much a given, only for her to perish along with all the other potential contestants when the boat on which they’re partying explodes, leaving the hapless Lars and Sigrit as the only ones left.

Later in the film, Katiana reappears as a ghost offering a doom-laden portent of danger, her skin charred to cinders and flames licking about her face. According to director David Dobkin, far...

An American Werewolf in London
An old-fashioned monster movie gore-fest that hasn’t dimmed in popularity, John Landis’s slightly twisted telling of a hiking mishap pulled nervous laughter from audiences pre-primed to expect ground-breakingly shocking special effects. Rick Baker delivers the shape-shifting fireworks in a two-minute sequence that goes way beyond easy laughs. The story is thin but the execution slick in a Landis film fashioned from his own screenplay, written at age 19.
