This movie is based on the well known graphic novel with the same title.
300 is not based on true story, it's not a history channel movie. It's a side of a tale... told by Dilios. Of course it's exaggerated, because it's supposed to be, it motivates the army against the Persian. It's a legend.
Now if we can get through this, we can talk about the atmosphere and visuals of the movie. It captures the essence of the graphic novel, from the coloring, blood splatter, set and design. Most of the scenes still hold up because it doesn't want to blend in. This movie comes from an era when these slowmotion scenes, epic deep sound effects didn't make you cringe, it pulled you into the story and you enjoyed the ride.
Nowadays people just want to turn off the brains, while watching something that has no artistic value at all, but trashing on movies that are almost 20 years old, pioneered dozens of visual solutions, and tell an exaggerated tale.

He only forgot to add some originality to it. The real story is much more interesting, and would've been fun enough without these exaggerations. Actors are decent - except Rory Kinnear playing Churchill. That was an unexpectedly horrible miscast... like didn't anyone say anything about that decision? Apart from that, all the technical elements, the style is okay, pacing is decent . Everything is there, it's not great but good. It's a movie that you can watch and forget about it a week later, like it never happened. A shame really because it had the potential, some scenes could've elevated the movie, but somehow feels weightless.
