This series can best be described as an intense melodrama devoid of Sex , Nudity and Violence while trying to appeal to an adult audience with a complex melodramatic storyline - it tried to do too much while attempting to appeal to an American Audience who loves violence ( Europe isn't crazy about violence ) , but believes sex must happen in a dark room with your clothes on - hence censored public TV - my point is that this very good melodrama was in search of an
audience - Technically the intricacies of the story were difficult to follow , I hate flashbacks but in this case were necessary - I gave this series a generous 7 because I thought it was well done - it was entertaining but not fun and didn't leave me with a good feeling until the very end - If you are going to make an adult melodrama - include some adult realism to make it believable.
I actually enjoyed this series but when I heard it was cancelled I was not surprised - after 6 episodes and a strange final - I was left unsatisfied on several fronts - the story was hard to follow in the first 2 episodes and only started to come together in the last 2 , the patriarch of the family was almost impossible to like , the rating of TVMA was a farce - it was a PG 13 which is only important because it obviously was searching for an audience - language aside - the "F" word could be bleeped out , the adult fare could be seen on America TV at 10:00 PM - Dr Odyssey was more risque, - which is strange because Australian TV is not as prudish as US TV - outside the Arab world and Vatican - no one is - with 1/2 the main stars either killed or leaving in the final - and the obvious secret revealed to insure the 2nd season that isn't happening - this Yellowstone wanna be was a big miss - I don't always agree with Netflix early terminations but this one they got right - having said that - I would have watched the second season.
I can't believe professional writers and show runners would come up with such a ludicrous episode in such a good series - aside from it not making any sense in forwarding the Star Trek story line - it was depressing and wasn't entertaining in the least - another example of showrunners killing a romance that they spent 2 years building for effect or change or some other stupid reason - what is even more serious is that now we can't trust any back story line or romance for this series - When is Capt Pikes romantic interest going to show up with a boyfriend she forgot to tell him about. As a trekie since Capt Kirk first commanded the Enterprise in 1966 - I will continue to watch but cross my fingers.
