Comedy and drama are two genres that often end up with a movie that is struggling to find it's place in either genre. Comedies are not limited to laughter and can have serious scenes, just like drama can have jokes or light-hearted moments. Movies like this one pose a problem where the comedy just makes the drama seem u serious though. This seems emphasized by the somewhat over the top acting of Cummings, leaning more towards satire/slapstick, in odd combination with the completely grim and wannabe-haunting soundtrack.
Along with the unnatural editing and mediocre script this really isn't worth spending 1,5 hours on.

A very intriguing movie. Somewhat reminding me of 'The Prisoner' in it's weirdness and almost cartoonish cinematography.
It helps to be aware of the background of when and where this movie takes place. It also helps to know that this was made during Soviet-reign and therefor can be easily filed in a long list of Soviet-propaganda movies, but the message doesn't seem as strong here as in other Soviet-propaganda movies. Maybe as a result of the very experimental style, which is a slightly ironic combination with a narrative of getting rid of the intellectuals and the artists... Propaganda aside, the movie does serve a very consistent ambience backed by a great soundtrack, making this a rather pleasant and interesting watch altogether.
