I really liked how the title explains perfectly what this film is about. It's about people who crosses to a different country, whose own lives crosses with characters that are nothing like them, and finally about people who are crossing genders on a quest to find themselves. The acting was superb, specially Evrim's character played by Deniz Dumanli. All the characters are complex and extremely interesting and I really loved how the movie has a slight twist making you expect one thing and delivering another. Istanbul depiction was beautiful but not in a postcard touristy way and it really showed the vibe of this huge, exotic, amazing city. What I liked the most was the connections that we could see forming between people who are unlikely to be hanging out. The music and cinematograpghy were also both very good. I strongly recommend this movie to any film lover.
If the objective of this movie was for the spectator to be undecided wether which character they liked the least, then they definitely succeeded.
Tashi (Zendaya) not only is the most manipulative and selfish of characters, but also spends the whole movie with a frown. Her husband Art, is practically a man-child and his friend Patrick is just a perpetual wild teenager. Apparently we're supposed to think they're all sexy/hot, which in my oppinion, none of them is.
Luca Guadagnino's decisions pertaining camera movements are just terrible. Instead of giving a sense of excitement to the story they just take you completely out of it and make you start thinking about the film and the cinematographic pretentious decisions they made. Music is the same; they're trying so hard to be original they just take you out of the story.
The time jumps were excessive and made it a bit hard to follow and the aging of the characters was pretty much limited to a change of hair style.
The script is just terrible and the ending is supposed to be dramatic and open to interpretation, however I was just waiting for this to end, forget about me wanting to find an intrerpretation. I just don't care.
This is one of the worst movies I've seen in the past years, and I've seen a lot. I really liked Guadagnino's "Call me by your name" and I liked Zendaya in Euphoria. However in Challengers, they completely missed the mark.
