This is actually spectacular and deserves to be in the '90s Teen Movie Hall of Fame! I'm surprised Sarah Kernochan didn't have more films under her director's belt because this film showcases just how witty she is both as a director and a writer. And Kirsten Dunst delivered as always, it was all right in the film industry when she and her Barbie-esque blonde had an absolute chokehold over teen movies.
This film is funny while pointing out the obvious gender disparity in our society and the importance of voicing your voice, rights, and mind. Both the girls and the boys are equally uttering the same amount of ridiculous lines, yet you can clearly distinguish just how the girls are naturally funny while the boys are naturally.. a bunch of doodyheads. The epilogue for each of the main girls is probably my favorite part, because imagine you're a girl in the 90s watching this for the first time in the theatre and tell me you're not hopeful for your future. Just like what Odie said to Miss McVane, when you're given a voice, it would be hard to shut up, and you're so right for that.

Usnavi used up all of his life's worth of luck to bag the BADDEST in the neighborhood.
On a more serious note, what a delight of a film! While raising important issues like gentrification, opportunity and limitations of immigrants, self-identity, the sense of community, and racism, the film seamlessly brought it all with beautiful musical numbers. I'm no musical theatre kid but I do enjoy how they interwoven it into the story.
Melissa Barrera is such a scene-stealer, but not gonna lie the women from the salon trio are such divas and I'm obsessed. Christopher Scott knock it out of the park with the choreographies.

My family may never lie to our elders about their sickness, but Billie's relationship with Nai Nai reminds me a lot of my relationship with my Popo.
Grandma has always been the best, be it about giving life advice, sympathizing with their grandkids, and being the main glue of literally every member of the family. After my Popo passed away, the family still continued the tradition of gathering, but it has never felt the same. And we all know why. My whole life flashed before my eyes when I heard the news of her passing for the first time. I broke down as I regret the many times I missed visiting her, the times I could've used to listen to her and support her, before her illness ate away her memories. I still carry that grief with me every day, and my eyes have never been able to control the waterworks when I'm thinking of her, especially after watching this type of film.
