A nice flick from the past. The violence is almost none with ridiculous fighting and torture scenes. There is no adult material which is very good (stupid sex innuendoes are usually annoying in contemporary movies). The song at the end is quite catchy but you should know Russian to follow the meaning.
Not a masterpiece but definitely a solid detective story done with the Soviet quality about the new times.
A few features really made me laugh: one of the male characters resembled Patrick Swayze and the other looked like Adriano Celentano. Both characters were goofy to the core. And two bearded mechanics were funny.
All evil characters in this one look like scatterbrains and simply cannot scare the viewer.
Enjoy.
A 7 out of 10 from me. Thanks for attention.

Welcome to a chick flick from the girls for the female audience. If you are a male, don't fall asleep during the 2+ hours of this melodramatic experience.
It's like a female version of "The Nutty Professor" (1996). Both movies can be seen in succession to form a total idea of being perfect.
It is about aerobics, cosmetics, good looks, staying alive, and males being utter stinking goats. Perhaps, due to some philosophic material, it's not general entertainment for the whole family. But old ladies will love and cherish this one, no doubt.
The detail that really annoyed me in the movie was the use of the "2001: A Space Odyssey" musical piece. It was too obvious and too pathetic. The rest cinema allusions were much less interfering, at least for me.
Do not expect to be blown away by all this "I want to be beautiful forever" stuff but expect to be impressed by the quality of the picture and sound. Besides, would not recommend anybody to watch it during a meal (especially a Christmas meal). There is too much girlish "wow!" emotion and sickening glam in it that can distract and spoil proper digestion.
Let me express my total respect to Mrs Demi Moore. She did not disappoint me. Again. The only two videos with her I watched before "The Substance" were "Tales from the Crypt" (the part about that young girl with high expectations and a ghoulish husband she married for money) and the well-known "Ghost". Both were marvellous and instantly became my favourites.
"The Nutty Professor" gets the highest mark from me. This girlish flick gets a 7 out of 10. Thank you for attention.
