Suspending reliance on strict fact will allow you enjoy this indie treasure. The filmmakers put a lot of effort and care into making this film look unique in spite of the lower budget. If they'd had higher funding, I can only imagine what they'd have been able to pull off. Practical effects and a passionate eye for the cinematographic approach make this rugged, dark film a thoroughly enjoyable watch.
When I first saw Niner, I was extremely impressed with the final product. The effort put in by so many talented, young performers and creators as well as those with a bit more seasoning was amazing. Having met several of the performers personally, I was very proud of their contributions to the film and fully appreciated the work of everyone else involved as well.
When a project has as much heart behind it as Niner did, it's easy to understand why it turned out so well.
Did it win an Oscar? No. Partly because it's difficult to win an award you weren't actually in the running for, BUT did it adequately demonstrate a solid understanding of cinema and theatrical performance? Absolutely, and I'd be very happy to watch another film featuring many of the same contributors.
Good work, everyone!
