I think alot if Neeson fans are grumbling because they think this series somehow undermines Liam's work. I don't see why it would. But it is indeed intended to be a prequel, although the write-up neglects to mention that. I found this series to be very engaging, easy to follow, well-paced and relatively well-acted. Really, the only character I didn't think sold the part was Jennifer Beals. She was ok but I'm just not a fan. Her roles are all pretty flat. I also thought it was confusing to have 3 regular characters that look so similar you have to track them a bit to realize they're different people - long dark hair, thin face, lack of personality, same make-up artist.
For the most part, the series is very bipartisan other than the unusually heavy presence of women in top positions. I'm one, btw, but it's a bit carried away here, like in SWAT.
I've actually binged this series all day today, now on S1E7, and I don't binge just anything.
Some of the situations and bad guys get a little stale and I think it's super weird for Bryan to be dating his sisters bf. There's plenty of plot holes and "magical" moments (it couldn't happen in real life). But still enjoying it, so far. It's the kind of show i would have liked to have known about sooner but the title made me think it was another Neeson film and I've seen those.

I've seen pretty much every 90s action film and they just don't make 'em like this anymore. This is one of those high tension films that really aged well. It could be remade and would be a big hit although I couldn't really say who would star in it here in 2025. Part of the thrill at the time was just the headlining actors including Kurt Russell and Halle Berry of course, and for a lot of people who either love or hate him, Steven Segal. I know the name but I couldn't tell you what movies he's been in, so I really didn't even notice this unusual occurrence that so many people are talking about. But what I will bet on is that he got paid very well for allowing the film to do this to his character. He was still a major star at that time.
I loved seeing all these great actors in one film, some of them already famous and some of them not so much at the time. Berry was so young she looked like a black Twiggy.
The tension was really non-stop and, on some level, believable. However despite the fact that I consider myself a well-educated intelligent adult I found it difficult to keep up with the technological and tactical jargon and chaos and at some point I just stopped trying to figure it out. Once you get to the end, everything does make sense however senseless some of the plotline and scenes were. It moves along very quickly so there's really not a lot of time for the typical rolling eyes and yelling at the screen during frustrating lengthy interims the way filmmakers do today in place of authentic tension. Definitely still a great watch.

This is the second '90s film that I've found on this platform which is erroneously listed as a dark comedy (along with action) - a relatively rare genre that refers to macabre situations intended to be humourous (Fargo; Violent Night, Harold & Maude; Pulp fiction...). This film was not presented that way when it first came out in theaters nor on any other platform. But I will admit that there is some romantic humor, however vague, and the usual witty one-liners here and there. I think the main reason this would have been placed into that category for the rookie content creator unfamiliar with dark humor is the fact that Travolta is just not a serious looking actor. Yes, he's been in some serious films but he started out as a comedy actor. Part of the reason he was successful is because he has a rather humorous face. The expressions, the unusual shape, the crooked sneer, the small eyes and wide jaw - all lends itself to a sitcom style. The only film I really ever liked him in was Fanatic, whose own autistic child helped him really sell that part. In Fanatic, his big dopey looking face helped sell the part. But he's just not a serious looking person - I'm just going to say I don't know how he was ever a teen heartthrob.
The film itself started off quickly; to the point, which we can all appreciate. But much of the action was quite staged and not very well. I don't know if the plot line was realistic, I imagine it was on some level - we all know that nukes and all kinds of weapons are stolen and sold to foreign governments all the time. We just had a government who sold them openly and often gave them away for free. Thank God that regime is gone.
But looking back on this film, although I normally like our action heroes from that era and Christian Slater did a great job, I just didn't feel like Travolta sold the part at all.
The film moves along well with a lot of decent tension and the usual good guy gets the girl. And while this is an entertaining action flick that will get you through a couple of hours, I don't really think anyone has said 'wow I need to own that film' unless they're a Slater or Travolta fan.
