  • Not to be taken seriously. Funny!

If you think of this as an extended SNL skit, and keep that in mind while you're watching it, I think you'll really appreciate it.

It's silly but very funny in places because of it.

If you know Jerry Seinfeld's comedy you can see this is very much from his mind.

The story is simply fun but the performances of the cast, many of whom are stand-up comedians like Seinfeld, make it really watchable. I actually found it fun wondering which famous face might pop up next. When they do appear they often come with numerous historical or pop culture references. So, along with the basic silliness of what you're being told and shown it all adds up to a bowl full of happy. (No more cereal puns I promise). I originally put this film on while I was working just to have some background noise but found myself drawn to watching it properly because I was so amused but also really impressed with the visual style of the film. Apart from the beautiful aesthetics of the 60s, they managed to add to the visual appeal with the art / direction style. They convey a somewhat dreamlike or fantasy-esque appearance about what you're shown without it being too "Willy wonka". If you remember that what you're seeing is a story being told by an adult to a child, it completely works and simply looks grrrrreat. (Sorry).

Really good fun, deserves better reviews, hence why I felt compelled to write this one.

    Nice one Jerry.

  • Lacking a powerful punch

Although it tries to be even handed in its story telling of a strong woman being all she wants to be, it is a bit heavy handed and clumsy in places where they try to show her overcoming the obstacle that is: white dudes. Apart from the main antagonist being white, there are other clips and scenes where she is struggling agaisnt male oppression, and i didint seen any even-handed-approach-to-casting-based-on-race there...... Overall the fillm was...ok. Ironically in a bid to (rightly) demonstrate that women have every chance and right to be strong heroes too, they've done so in quite a partonising fashion by laying on the "strong female / bad men" imagery a bit too thickly. Did they think women wouldnt get it? (Or men for that matter? ) They literally make men the reason for holding her back from her ptential. Its the equivalent of putting some albino whip cracking dude in black panther.

From a general film making perspective: I think they could have done a better job framing the whole memory loss plot line. It's quite pivotal but it seemed like it was added later or took a back seat to other bits.

Somehow a film that should have been one of the most powerful (like the character) seems to lack a solid punch and I can't help but think this has something to do with the actor potraying the character. Shes pretty flat and emotionless.. I'm not saying that she has to be blubbing or screaming to demonstrate range but it's just difficult to connect with a character that doesnt actually show much character.

If you want to see a show about real female empowerment check out GLOW.

This was fun but a missed opportunity.

  • The "Axe Cop" of films.

Axe Cop (as it explains on the website) is drawn by a 29 year old but written by his 5 year old brother. One cant really fault whats on the screen in Dragon wars. but everything behind the pretty pictures seems like it was put together hurriedly as part of a school project. You know what i mean when you start saying things choice phrases like..."Er, what?", or "what's he doing here?" and the classic "why would they do that?". I don't know much about the writers but I think they took lessons from from class 1a. You know, the kids who play in the sand pit with their action figures....making sure the good guys always get away "just in time". its this total lack of real drama and logic that REALLY makes it seem immature.

NEVERTHELESS as with axe cop as long as you're not looking for anything too serious you'll have fun. Especially wondering "how did they decide that this was right?"
