The show is full of loopholes and is written with a focus on repartee instead of actual human interaction. I suppose the idea was to make it sound intelligent but it just alienates the audience. This is especially true of the detective Nan Guidry who comes across as a deeply unlikeable character who could've been a really nice person if only the writers had focussed on making her a person instead of a caricature of a lesbian tough cop. The sisters were far more relatable though and quite fun to watch on screen. Too much importance was given to the character of the doorman without giving him too much time. Catherine was far too annoyingly rich black woman. Other characters were also quite stereotypical and bland. Story ends nicely and that's all that is going for it. If not for some amazing acting from Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel, this show would've not even made it past the halfway mark for me.
The movie only teaches you one thing - you're going to hell anyway so might as well enjoy your life on earth lol. The concept of good vs bad in religion is so ridiculous, I can't even! There's a boy who's going to end up getting his tongue severed for the rest of time just because he spoke a victimless lie. Religion is whack! The gore was good, but the story was really poor. Acting was worse. Father character was more like a jail superintendent and mother his silent accomplice. I think they should be sent to hell for abusing their kids (literally physically abusing them). This is a propaganda film for people to be 'good' as per the religion. But I think it works the other way. I would forsake a religion that had such unjust punishment waiting for me, just because I wanted to enjoy my life.
The movie is carried on the broad shoulders of all relatively unknown actors who have played an amazing role. Each one of them is instrumental to the story and has played their role to the T. The mother and father were especially good. The father portrayed the helplessness of being stuck in a situation really well. The mother on the other hand is a passive aggressive being who wants to do right by her family but is drowned in the woes of her life and can't do anything. The kids too played their roles really well and especially the teenaged daughter was a perfect fit for the role.
The fact is that the acting was so good and crispy that the incredible locales of Uttarakhand just remained as a backdrop for the movie and you hardly end up even noticing them. This is a testament to how well the actors portrayed the characters.
