  • A true masterpiece... entertainment for the brain

I must admit it: I didn't understand a single thing after the 1st viewing. Yet, I'm not the kind of guy who comes and b*tch about a movie after one viewing only just cuz he didn't take some time to analyze it properly.

So I started thinking about it, replaying some key scenes in my head, then came here and read a few more about this movie... then I could figure it out, in a way. I don't pretend I fully understand it and get every single detail Lynch placed here and there... Still I can pretend this movie is a work of art, in all its form. From lighting, music, mood, colors, camera work... to the remarkable performances of the actors. Everything is delightful!

Yet I was disappointed by the incredible amount of viewers who hated this movie. Most of them just thrashed it cuz of the plot, not even noticing the brilliant visual work of Lynch (which, that alone, deserves an award). I have something to say to these "undoubtedly-Michael-Bay-flicks lovers": Mulholland Dr IS NOT a popcorn movie! It is not meant for entertainment, if not the fact that it entertains your mind the same way a puzzle or a rubick cube does when you are messing with it. It stimulates your judgment, your logic, your ability to memorize a bunch of stuff given to you. Besides, the story, even if pulled that way looks more like an IQ test than a script for a film, remains human. Stay close to the human emotions and reactions... And this dream/reality connection goes, in my opinion, far beyond everyone is let to believe.

So if you don't get it after one viewing, watch it again. And again. And again if necessary... but if you still don't get it, just give it up. You probably don't have the brain capacity required. But cuz you just can't understand it, doesn't mean it sucks. Seriously, you think the movie would have been nominated in so many film festivals if it wasn't that great?

So quit b*tching on David Lynch's directing skills. Love him or hate him, that won't change the fact that this guy is a genius and that his name is as great as Hitchcock or Kubrick.

P.S: To all those who mentioned: worst movie ever, I got some news for you: there are far far worse movies out there. Check out Battlefield Earth, Burton's Planet of the apes, Armaggedon or Pearl Harbor. Now that's some pretty awful movies! And I only named 3...

  • Japanese cinema at its best!

I was told by everyone that this movie was awful. Even the critics said it was bad. Then I wanted to check it out by myself! MAN, has everyone lost their mind? This is probably one of the best sci-fi flick I've ever seen! Never saw something that refreshing since Fifth Element.

Of course a lot of people are going to say it is a Matrix rip-off, that the script looks like Terminator or Independence Day, blah blah... Then I'm sure these people didn't watch the same movie I did! Cuz it has nothing to do with these films, AT ALL! It may be futuristic, but it has its own universe, its own way to introduce it to you. Plus, you stay close to the characters, to the very end. Even though the plot is big and takes place on a higher level, you always stay close to the characters life, emotions, motivations and goals. That's what I liked about this movie. It may be sci-fi, but the characters are not so far from any drama movies.

I heard someone saying that the Japanese love to copy American movies. BLASPHEMY! If you look carefully, it's the total opposite. Weren't the Americans the ones who did a remake of Godzilla? Weren't the Americans the ones who did free adaptations of Ringu and Ju-On? Aren't the Americans planning to do a live-action movie of The Transformers? Besides, Matrix IS a Japanese animation *rip-off*. It deliberately got his inspiration from anime such as Ghost in the Shell or X. And if you want good example of innovative Japanese movies, I recommend to you Akira Kurosawa's, even though it has nothing to do with sci-fi.

Anyways, Returner is a must see to all sci-fi fans and to all Japanese movies and animation lovers. I can guarantee you a good time if you watch it *open-minded* and if you put aside the *rip-off* crap we've been so fed about.

  • Aliens, the ultimate COMBAT MOVIE!

I read a lot of comments here and I was so pleased to see that most of the people here enjoyed this movie as much as I do. Until I read some that insulted Cameron or James Horner of being untalented people... well I must raise here a big point that even Cameron raised before he released this movie: Aliens is NOT a remake of Ridley Scott's Alien! It's not meant to be an atmospheric thriller with lots of mysteries and shots that strangely looked like 2001, it's meant to be a COMBAT MOVIE! Like said in the preview: THIS TIME, IT'S WAR! And it is just great the way it is! I mean, yeah the first one was beautiful, I loved it. I liked all the mysteries and the fact that we never clearly see the creature. But hey, just one is enough! We didn't need a 2nd one. That's why Cameron majistically exploited the Alien theme on a more action level. And that is just wonderful! I mean, this is great, this is big, this is full of credibility and the visual effects are just astonishing. How can anyone dare to complain about this movie? This is a masterpiece, a huge work of art! Just watch the special features in the Alien Quadrilogy DVD edition and see all the time, energy and effort these people brought to this movie, and you'll just fall on your knees and say "Thank you James Cameron". If you can find anything to complain about it means you just don't understand this movie... I read somewhere that someone was saying: James Horner needs a dictionary and look at the word "Atmospheric"... well I'll just say the same about you guys: Take a godamn dictionary and look at the words "Action" "Combat" and "War"... maybe you'll understand.
