  • Disappointing

I was looking forward to this film based on the enthusiastic reviews, but boy what a disappointment. First of all, points for trying. Also for the worst wigs ever. But this actually could have been better...perhaps with less effort. Let me explain...

For a spoof of 60s sci-fi, less is more. They didn't have special effects featuring exploding heads, oceans of blood and intestines on display back then, so orgiastically including them just didn't make sense. In addition, the film quality should have been less bright, sharp and colorful. Not necessarily black and white, but at least washed out.

On the opposite end, less movie didn't help. I wasn't aware going in that it was only 45 minutes long. When it was suddenly over at the halfway mark I was confused and annoyed.

Look, I really do appreciate the enjoyment of a spoof and the apparent love that goes into making one-especially on a zero budget with actors whose real jobs probably involve fast food or customer service. Their hearts were in the right place, but all the other people who rated "Explorer From Another World" didn't take the time to write a review to counter the 10s. So here you go. Enter warned.

  • Good but could have been better

"Dead Mail" was actually a better film than I'd expected, and for that it gets points. It starts off with a very interesting scene of a bloody, chained man crawling to a mailbox to toss in a blood stained scrap of paper, and then stopped and pulled back into a house by a panicked kidnapper. It then switches to the post office, where a man named Jasper is a miracle worker when it comes to locating the people for whom dead mail was intended to go. Jasper-in spite of living in a halfway house-seems to have a Russian agent contact who he gets information from as well as other people who are capable of bringing up detailed facts and figures. I used to work for a company where my job was to try and locate lost equipment we'd rented out and it was fun and interesting, but I wish I'd had Jasper's contact list.

So at this point I'm assuming the movie is going to be about Jasper finding the man at the beginning before he gets killed. Instead, it switches to the story of how the man was kidnapped and why and the continuation of that story without Jasper. That's where I became much less interested. I liked Jasper and I wanted to know his story, not the kidnapped guy's story.

That disappointment notwithstanding, it still was a reasonably interesting film, with decent cinematography and performances. But the kidnapper's weirdness was only good enough for numerous "WTF??" moments, and I really didn't feel much for the victim. The only one I was emotionally attached to was-you guesses it-Jasper, and he had a very short story arc. And the ending was rather unfulfilling, and didn't clarify what happened to the postal worker who went to the house and got caught. Ultimately it was an okay film that had promise, but took a wrong turn.

  • Who is this for?

Ya know, every now and then you come across a film that makes you take a step back, breathe, and say out loud with a firm, steady voice, "Seriously, what the HELL?" "Please Baby Please" is one of those films.

Lately, Shudder has been adding weird, artsy stuff to its library. But the thing is, weird and artsy does not equal horror, so if you're going into it assuming it is, you will be greatly disappointed. Regardless, you still may be greatly disappointed because this thing is tough to comprehend.

The characters are late 50's-early 60s beatniks and "Wild Ones" gangs, complete with dreamlike dance sequences that make you ask "why?" The cinematography looks like it was filmed on a smartphone, reminiscent of those old Showtime late at night programs. Demi Moore has a forgettable cameo. In fact, all of the acting is forgettable. My best guess at the plot is that it's about the beatnik married man falling in love with a gang leader and realizing he's really gay. But it's done in such a way that it reminds me of an off-off-off Broadway play that your acting class girlfriend makes you go to because she's heard the director is a genius and you sit through it in absolute misery because you think it's stupid and makes no sense and you start thinking about all the other things you could be doing instead of pretending that this crap is artistic and fascinating so you won't get in a fight with your girlfriend when she asks for your opinion on the way home.

Trying to find one positive thing, I did like the colors. I know that sounds funny, but you'll understand if you choose to try and watch it.

Overall I just can't recommend this- unless you enjoy pretentious artsy fartsy experimental stuff-in which case you may enjoy it. I give it a 4 for effort.
