It's a little inaccessible. The jokes would be funny, if I actually knew what the heck they were talking about. I don't live under a rock either, I follow pop culture. The casting is terrible. Is her dumb boyfriends supposed to be a straight man who is interested in this fat, uncharismatic, self-absorbed girl? He is an unnecessary character; somehow, he doesn't hang out with Billy and Julie, but he is in no way a foil to Billy. He's like a redundant piece of furniture. I think pretty much everything about this show (with the exception of Julie's costume design) is terrible. They somehow manage to make her appear smaller. But honestly, she's not cute, and she's barely funny, and this entire show is pretty indulgent. If you're not cute, be funny at least.
This movie was amazing. I became really heavily invested in the people's relationships. At the beginning when we meet Annie, it is really interesting to see her description of Phillipe. She is clearly very in love with him, and by the end of this movie, I have decided that I really hate Phillipe as a person for how he treated Annie.
In the beginning when they first start dating, he pursues her intensely and they get together, but she just kind of is roped into his dream. She doesn't even really know him that well before they start dating, and she says in the movie, that he never really asked her if she had any dreams that she wanted to follow. In the end, she is forced to follow his dream to keep her relationship with him alive. Later on in the film they reveal that she is only invited to go to NY once, after Phillipe fails the first time and he needs moral support. It is mentioned in the film that she threatened him, insulted him, cried at him, and begged him for permission to go to NY and he never said it was okay for her to come, until HE has some sort of problem.
Annie's entire person really makes me sad. It is heartbreaking how supportive she was of him, and how easily he cast her aside for some groupie's pussy. Annie said it was exhausting for her to constantly try and figure out what was going on in his head. A lot of what happened was unfair to Annie because she was more of a mother figure to Phillipe than anything else. This is not the role of a girlfriend.
This movie, while a beautiful and haunting image, is actually kind of a sad story about an egomaniac Frenchman who does completes a dangerous stunt. In the process, he loses 2 significant relationships, but he does do the thing he set out to do, cross the Twin towers.
Ultimately this movie was a joy to watch, I just wish that it had ended better for Jean Luis and Annie.
