Although I'd read some sniffy reviews I and my wife decided to give it a go on the strength of the other two films which we found immensely enjoyable. I was initially slightly disappointed that Sally Hawkins was replaced by Emily Mortimer but she was fine as the Mother. The rest of the cast were all great but Mr Banderos was very funny as the boat captain bringing smiles every time he was on screen,(..he really does do effortless comedy, these days...). The special effects were excellent and I really couldn't tell if they were all in the Peruvian Jungle or not, at times. Taken as a Trilogy I'd say they were an almost perfect set of family friendly films.
....I would have given this 10/10 but for one tiny caveat which you should spot early on,(..and from then on..),you'll know what I mean, if you watch it... and you absolutely should because it's a fantastic addition to the Western Genre which I would put up there with pretty much anything I've seen. It is not an easy watch, at times, as all the randomness of frontier life is on full view, little accidents become life threatening as there are no Doctors Surgeries nearby and everyone you meet could be a bandit fixing to kill and rob you,(..or worse..),are there as our 'Heroes' trek across the Plains in search of a new life. I have read a lot about the 'Wild West' and this,(...apart from the aforementioned caveat..),is pretty much how I envisioned it would have been... very tough and brutal at times. The cast were uniformly excellent with mostly new,(..to us, anyway..), new faces though anchored by the mighty Sam Elliott in a role he was born to play, the star though was probably the daughter 'Elsa' who is also the sometimes narrator of the story....i am sure we'll be seeing more of this one, but ,like I said, every one was superb. Must mention the fantastic cinematography and scenery and again, touching insights to the lives of Native American's whose lives were irrevocably changed by the advent of the 'White Man'. The creator Mr Sheridan also appeared as he did in 'Yellowstone' clearly a man on a singular mission to educate as well as entertain about the West, old and New.....more power to your elbow,Sir, you are doing a Great Job...Unmissable stuff,(..apart from that ickle caveat I mensched earlier, Hee hee hee..).
