I started watching Dept. Q almost by accident-just scrolling for something to watch without high expectations. Since I've never read the books it's based on, I can't compare the adaptation, but maybe that helped me enjoy it purely as its own thing. At first, the lead character's grumpy, antisocial vibe reminded me of Dr. House, but in a detective setting. However, after the first episode, the show really pulled me in.
What hooked me wasn't just the mysteries (which are clever and often heartbreaking), but the way the characters develop. Without spoilers, the protagonist's backstory and the emotional weight of the first major case they tackle add so much depth. The pacing is great-it balances tense investigations with quieter, character-driven moments that make you care.
The acting is fantastic, especially the lead's portrayal of a brilliant but damaged detective, and the chemistry between the main team feels authentic. The writing keeps you guessing without relying on cheap twists, and the Danish setting adds a moody, atmospheric touch.
One of the best crime series I've seen recently-definitely worth sticking with past the first episode if the tone feels a little familiar at first. By the end, it becomes something truly gripping and unique.
