The premise of this movie is really pretty good. Unfortunately, I never dreamed that I would say it, but Chris Rock's continuous quips are what ruin it. I would never want him to be completely silent, but in this movie, I asked him to shut up on too many occasions. The one thing I enjoyed were the scenery changes, mainly Czechoslovakia which was a country that I have not often seen. Beautiful. Anthony Hopkins is stellar, as are all of the actors, and Chris Rock shows that he is a credible, but he actually was convincing. Other than his constant, unnecessary comedic comments, as I said, the premise is really pretty good.
The main problem with this movie is the incomplete storyline. Sure, most of it is figured out as the movie galumphs along, but the characters are all pretty shallow and very stupid. Wahlberg is exceptionally obtuse. What the hell does he want to be - a man who rapes men or a female rapist? Either way, he is exceedingly dumb. And ugly. The best actor in the film is Topher Grace, who plays the nerdy accountant to the hilt. Michelle Dockery is not bad, but she is like a dumb blonde, ignoring all the cues that Wahlberg is there to kill her. This is a movie that I would not recommend to my worst enemy. Why spoil their day just because this Mel Gibson piece of trash spoiled mine?
