Is this groundbreaking content? No. Does it need to be? Also no.
We've come to expect that any media featuring trans identities needs to be educational, righteous, progressive, and informative of their experiences. It doesn't!
It's refreshing to have a mindless primetime sitcom featuring a trans main character- but not have the storylines solely focused on that single characteristic.
Of course the topic is navigated at intersections where it makes sense, but it is by no means focused on her gender identity.
Instead, the show is focused on themes and plot lines we've come to expect from our comfort sitcoms, with plenty of laughs to go around too.
Hoping they get a season 2. I need more Laverne Cox on my screen because that woman is a STAR.

I guess I didn't have a well-rounded understanding of the source material, or perhaps I just didn't "get it", but this one felt like it was trying way too hard to be something more than it really was.
It felt like we were all just there to see Daniel Craig play daddy with a young supermodel- yet, we must pretend that there is more substance to this movie than there actually is.
They're not in love- it's not really about love. It's not really about being queer in the 50's. It's not really about addiction. It's not really about exploring your world through psychedelics. It's not really about telepathy.
It's mainly about sex- and I'm fine with that- but why do we need to prop up 3 or 4 older/younger sex scenes with 2 additional hours of film that never really builds a cohesive or engaging story?
This film shines in it's backgrounds, trippy visuals, unusual soundtrack choices, and sex scenes (plus a stellar performance from Leslie Manville that kept me awake during the last 45 minutes).

This is not a masterpiece, nor is it the worst show I've ever seen. In fact, it's pretty entertaining and I'm looking forward to the finale next week. It was always meant to be a limited series, but I've spent a month watching people screaming "CANCEL THIS SHOW" on every platform, acting as if this show is somehow more exploitative than 90% of the reality shows on TLC. I'm definitely not a fan of Sam Levinson or The Weeknd, and I think a more diverse soundtrack really could have helped the series rather than the constant reminder of the Weeknds presence. Overall, for a fun and sleazy series that depicts the very real darkness of pop stardom and the almost cult-like thinking that fame can create, I found this limited series highly entertaining, and would love to see more in the same vein from a majority of the cast. Jocelyn forever xx.
