  • Horror fans deserve better

After doing a bit of research the writer of the original 1997 I know what you did last summer also wrote the original scream. This goes some way to explaining why the two are so similar however surely you don't write essentially the same script twice just with minor differences?

I guess you do if you're Kevin Williamson.

It's interesting and important to note that he actually wrote the script for ikwydls before scream but it was only through the success of the original scream film that ikwydls got made.

Scream of course was rebooted in 2022 and despite a mixed reception was a box office success. With that in mind I guess it only makes sense that in 2025 we get a remake of I know what you did last summer also still penned by Williamson.

I can't help but compare this film to scream because they are so similar and this remake suffers with the same problems that the original did in that it's just an inferior scream. The characters aren't as memorable, the kills aren't as fun and I was just left with a feeling of having seen this before so many times. It's a paint by numbers horror film, you get a group of annoying young adults and have them killed off one by one by a masked individual while they try to both survive and work out who it is that's trying to kill them. Friday the 13th did that back in 1980 and yet here we are in 2025 with the same old narratives.

Horror fans deserve better and with Bring her Back being out at the moment there's very little reason to check this one out.

  • What the world needs now is Drebin, Frank Drebin

The Naked Gun is to quote Seth Mcfarlane 'we used to have these things called comedy's'.

These are films intended to make their audience laugh, laughter for those not in the know is a feeling you get deep in the pit of your stomach, it's not too dissimilar to the feeling of vomiting and is just as contagious.

Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr, son of Frank Drebin Sr played by the late great Leslie Neilsen from the original Naked Gun films and subsequent tv series. Much like the original trilogy this new film is filled with one liners, puns and general silly antics galore. They're the sort of jokes that if you told them during a stand up performance you'd be booed off stage. This however is not intended as a criticism of the film but rather an observation of how snobby stand up audiences have become.

This film was hilarious, having that break of 30 years between this film and the last allowed the writers to have a whole host of modern joke topics to draw from such as electric cars, billionaires and even Bill Cosby. There are so many jokes in fact that it's not possible to take them all in on only one viewing and this therefore gives the film rewatch-ability. As a slight negative though with so many different types of jokes being told/shown there will inevitably be some that leave you rolling your eyes, only for the film to then immediately hit you with another zinger.

The plot is as simple as it gets but really it only servers as the toast transporting the spread (the jokes in this case) into your mouth hole. Frank is on the case of a supposed suicide which quickly develops into a much larger murder case. Armed with a badge and a thirst for coffee he sets out to apprehend the culprit.

With all that in mind the Naked Gun has enough gags to more than fulfil even the largest of fetish parties. At a time when things seems so bleak this is the perfect film to truly let your hair down and just enjoy some silliness for 90 minutes. I can't recommend it enough.

  • Disney not bad, just sometimes Disney do bad things

At this point you fall into one of two categories when it comes to Disney remakes. You're either done with them or the nostalgia's got you. I've been on the former side for a long time now and it's strange to suddenly find myself amongst the nostalgia crowd.

The original Lilo and Stitch is my second favourite Disney film (only surpassed by monsters inc, don't get any ideas mouse house). Seeing things from the other side can sometimes be enlightening but when it comes to nostalgia you're either going to simply love seeing your favourite characters again or it's going to kill your childhood. I have to say this is probably the first remake where I actually just enjoyed spending time with these characters again.

Firstly and mostly importantly they've absolutely nailed the character of stitch. He's a character that in both the original film and the remake teaches us that nobody is all bad. Sometimes people do bad things but often there's a reason behind their actions. This remake for me got that across just as well as the original did. The look of the character, the mannerisms and getting the original voice actor back (Chris Sanders) all help bring stitch expertly to life.

Narratively this remake does make some changes. Positively, we get more stitch chaos than the original and that's always appreciated and got the most laughs by far. Negatively, the film struggles to let the audience breathe at times. There's such a large cast of characters and some of them do just seem to be here because they were in the original. I also had a bit of an issue with the ending, there was a point where I had a lump in my throat but rather than the film ending once that incident was resolved there's then another additional scene. I get why it needed to have that extra scene but it took away from the emotional impact of what I felt should've been the films actual conclusion.

The relationship between Pleakley and Jumba also felt more childish than it did in the original. Rather than simply disguising themselves, this time they actual turn themselves into humans and the interactions between the two characters I found to be not just unfunny but annoying. This was definitely the biggest disappointment of this remake for me.

Overall however stitch himself is excellent and getting to spend more time with him is always a big plus. Whilst enjoyable the film isn't as good as the original and with that in mind does it really need to exist?

Much like a lot of these remakes, probably not.
