Pro:
* intriguing premise/mystery: 17 children of one class vanish in one night exactly at 2:17 a.m. Without a clue
* it is no sequel!
* trailer (the first one that I saw) did not spoil * cast is believable * cinematography, sound(track), special effects are well crafted * eery atmosphere * tension (at least until revelation) * intimate scene lasts only 3 seconds
Neutral: * narrative structure: 6 different points of view (similar to "pulp fiction") * jump scares * dark humour sprinkled into * fast pacing; a lot of action
Contra: * revelation underwhelming in my opinion; a bit of a fairy tale * revelation somehow abrupt * revelation raises (many) questions in retrospect * some brutal, unnecessary images; violence is very graphic * the script wants to be smarter than it is in retrospect * a bit too much hype; it's not the best horror movie in years, rather average * maybe too long (>120 mins)

User Review for Freies Land, D 2019
9/10 German Remake 5/10 Spanish Original
I found the remake definitely better than the spanish version. The stories are basically the same, BUT: because it is set 1992 in Meck-Pom (former GDR, which was an autocracy), as a German (I was born in West Germany) you can understand the land and the people, the atmosphere, situations and relationships much better than shown in the original movie. So I found 'Freies Land' much more authentic than 'La isla minima'.
Because I am German and not Spanish I couldn't (strongly) relate to the original spanish story in the aftermath of the civil war, respectively post-fascist Franco era.
