I watched this because I have been waiting for a sequel to the Old Guard. The first one was interesting. This one was not. Of course, Charlize carries the movie but there is not enough backstory about her and Quinn or Uma Thurmond's character. It's hard to buy into the relationships if you don't have enough information to ground the characters. The movie is mostly one long fight scene with little explanation about why. I guess it's set up for a third movie, maybe they will fix that but it might be a long wait. Too bad. They just needed to add more scenes from the past and it might have been more interesting.
I started this series, and the first episode was so confusing that I decided not to watch. Several months later I decided to finish it. I love Uzo and Giancarlo as performers and I started to understand the series a bit better. But by the 6th episode I was tired of the constant silly banter that didn't go anywhere. The clues were transparent. So, I skipped to the last episode just to get it over with and I can say I was disappointed by the final conclusion. It does really go on to long. I know what Shonda wanted it to be, but she missed the mark with the script. It was ultimately unsatisfying. Too bad.
I thought Riri was an interesting character in Wakanda Forever, tech genius but better than Tony Stark. This story doesn't not do anything to enhance her character, if anything it diminishes her. Some of the aspects of the series were good, development of a new kind of AI, giving us more of her backstory. The villains are one of the most interesting aspects, especially Joe and the Hood. But the ultimate bad guy, was boring and so generic. I'm not a true follower of Marvel comics so his character introduction didn't mean much to me and frankly he wasn't all that intimidating which is the same problem that the new Captain America movie suffered from. Frankly, I was not a fan of the magical incorporation into this story. I would have preferred it had stayed grounded in science. Maybe this movie will be loved by the younger set but definitely not worth a rewatch for me.
