When James Gunn first made Guardians of the galaxy it was a HIT. I think it made cultural ripples throughout humor and film. After Guardians of the Galaxy the tone of the marvel superhero films changed dramatically. More geared towards his very lighthearted, colorful, comedic style. James Gunn changed superhero films forever with guardians of the galaxy.
They brought back the orator of the modern day superhero tone to kick off a new DC universe, and to showcase their bold take on Superman. The film is coated thickly with James Gunns style. So it feels VERY similar to every other superhero film we've seen over the last decade. If you are looking for something different directionally dont expect to find it here.
This being said the first two thirds of this film succeeds greatly as a superhero film. It has great writing, good character development, a great plot set up in my opinion. Felt smart. Definitely stands in the pool of superhero films in the last decade as being on of the 'better ones'. BUT it's still a 'superhero film'... so... ya know. If you are sick of superhero films this won't change your mind. The last third of the film gets lost in the sauce that other superhero films get lost in. Very long overly prolonged fight scenes. Cliched retribution. Plot lines being lost in the over reliance on fighting.
For a superhero film it was good- it is very lighthearted and comedic and gives you a good taste of James Gunns take on Superman. It's different. It'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

I was on board with this film from the start. I thought it was quiet but said a lot. It's surely a passive almost melodic film that mosies about with a loose story. You are merely a silent observer of two peoples melancholy Tokyo experience. Watching those two people slowly come together was slightly unnerving to me... as their joyous union indubitably rears the ugly head of infidelity. Adulterous behavior doesn't put a smile on my face, whether that be in a physical or emotional nature. The movies nature and message could have led to a deep truthful message. Instead it leads nowhere at all, like a match that fizzles out and dies without even a whimper. Incredibly anticlimactic and ambiguous as to what this film is trying to say. All I know is that it showed and romanticized a relationship I found wrong.
This film wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be. It was Definitley super weird and some things (technically speaking) didn't make a whole lot of sense. BUT I think it's one of the most creative films I've seen in a long time. It says a lot of things, and I would argue it does a good job of saying them. It has some hard hitting messages about self and how we fit into relationships as people, messages I've never seen on screen before. That to me is what makes great art, an expression of something I've never even thought to say. Yet it's relatable, human and we all feel it. This film is super strange, and different, but I enjoyed what it has to say and its method of saying it was very interesting to say the least.
Granted I watched this tired on an airplane- so maybe I'm crazy. All these negative reviews are surprising me and making me doubt myself.
