I would easily rate it into the top 100 of bad movies that were originally supposed to be critical, intellectual and observant to societal changes.
It seems they noticed themselves that this was plain c**p, and tried to spice it up with some comedy. Alas, almost always failing in this respect as well.
Yes, I did watch it attentively throughout to the end, thinking and hoping for an explanation of the whole flic. I was hoping and praying that we might find out that it was just a dream, or something likewise. Ales, it wasn't. I don't want to spoiler you with the end, and I couldn't. There's nothing to spoiler you with. The end is actually the climax to an already very weak undertaking.
"Nothing to be seen here. Move further."

This is the typical Philippe Noiret movie as we like them (if we do; I do!).
The typical double-bind two-faced chap, where the audience doesn't know if he's sort of the good or the bad guy.
If it is the "Coup de Torchon" (which I adore), La Grande Bouffe, Les Ripoux and others.
The story in itself isn't most convincing, but carried forth pretty well, entertaining and funny mostly by Noiret and his interactions with Guy Marchand, who is able to cope with the presence of Noiret in this movie.
We see some naked flesh, pretty much for the time when this movie was shot. We see some independent woman, a mayor only interested in tourism business.
Overall, quite an entertaining movie, but far away from anything else. So, just watch it if you can.

This is a movie definitively tailored for Belmondo. There are others that are, too, and they are good. Here it is just a Belmondo-Echo-Chamber. He's not the usual hero here, but the perfect hero. Every man and woman fall for him, he sells whatever he feels like selling, from houses to islands.
In this movie he beats whatever can be beaten. And he always returns to his humble background. The only thing that I could, and wanted to remember was that girl, the girl who initially kept her distance, until, towards the end, got the better of Belmondo.
If you ARE a fan, you'd probably want to watch this. Otherwise, skip it.
