This is the first version of Jane Eyre I ever saw, I must have been about 8 years old and fell in love with it immediately. As an adult I have been trying to get hold of it on DVD with no luck, just by chance the other morning it came on to an old movies sky channel and I was able to see it again.
It was more beautiful than I remembered it, the images created using only black and white film are amazing, beautiful if not a little depressing in places it captures the mood of the book perfectly. I love Joan Fontain but her hair annoyed me throughout, a sort of mixture of the fashion of the day (1944) and the era (1830's).
Orson Welles I think was the perfect Mr Rochester, moody, changeable, abrupt yet kind and strong. He was also striking to look at but not handsome, just like the Mr Rochester of the book.
The film does leave out some the story, there is no St John for example or her new found family, but it is a film not a mini series and does well to capture the main arks of the story.
Brilliant!

I saw this movie about ten years ago on TV and I was very excited as I was and still am a huge Brent Spiner fan. Overall the film is a little unmemorable.
You do feel for the main character who just wants to be left alone to live in the wild and who gets himself in terrible trouble with the law. Brent plays Bob, a friend who tries to help Claude out.
Overall, I have it on tape and would only watch it again to see Brent Spiners scenes.
There were some recognizable faces in the cast, and it does pass for a good true story, I like stories based on reality.

I am 25 years old and I first saw this film when I was about 8. I have a wonderful memory for songs and lyrics and I can still remember (even though I haven't seen it for 15 years) all of them.
Goodbye my lady love, Honeymoon, Hello my baby, Be sweet to me kid, and of course I wonder who's kissing her now. I am desperate to see this again, my Nan is gone from us now and I used to watch it with her and perform the songs for her in fancy dress. Well it was lovely.
June Havers was so lovely and the film was light and easy to watch. A very cute little love story with wonderful music, I have seen a lot of musicals and no others have stuck in my head as much.
Please if anyone hears anything please post here.
