My father was an engineer on a Norwegian Merchant Marine ship during WWII (although not in the arctic region that I know of). His ships were wrecked three times, yet he managed to survive. He didn't talk too much about what he went through, yet it was evident that he was deeply troubled by what he saw and went through. After the war, he moved to the US. Decades later, the Norwegian government sent him medals for his service. He through them into a drawer, forgotten until after his death. Seeing this movie gave insight into what he may have experienced. It was beautifully filmed, and well acted. Glad I watched it, yet depressing too.
I never played the game, and really knew nothing about it until the trailer was released. When I saw the cast and the genre, I knew I had to watch. I will admit that the first episode had me scratching my head a bit. I really didn't know what to expect.
The second episode helped clear things up. I was very impressed with the acting, sets and cinematography. Just shows that dark sets don't have to be so dark that the viewer sees nothing.
Then came episode 3, and I fell in love with the show. The side story of Bill and Frank was unexpected (to me anyway...again, knew nothing of the games) and was sublime. The actors, Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, were beyond good in their roles. Add to that the Linda Ronstadt sound track...perfection.
Fingers crossed that the show continues to be great!

I adored this movie. For someone who has become quite cynical with today's world, this film has somewhat renewed my faith that mankind is capable of wonders. Marlow Barkley was perfect in this role, and Jason Momoa was wondrous. The special effects were beyond great. This is, hands down, my favorite movie in at least the last decade. It reminds me somewhat of "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams. That said, this film is not as dark. There were times when the amazing scenery made me gasp in wonder. I will be watching this film over and over again. I can see this becoming a go to movie for the holiday season (or really any season). Do yourselves a favor and watch this. You won't be disappointed.
