Get it? Because he's yelling! And that's funny, right? That a guy is yelling? Well I hope you find it funny because this film is an hour and half of only that.
Tim Robinson, from I Think You Should Leave, plays the character that he plays in every I Think You Leave sketch, and develops an unhealthy obsession with his neighbor Paul Rudd, who plays Paul Rudd. I suppose they were going for this, but this film might have been interesting if they actually hired actors instead to play actual parts. There's no more synopsis than that because that is all the plot that this film has.
I do have to admit, I didn't make it through the whole thing. I left after a little more than hour, so I got through most of it I guess. Normally I wouldn't review a film I couldn't finish, but in this case it was pretty obvious that I had seen enough and the film wasn't going anywhere. The film shows no sign of momentum or dynamics, and if there was a tonal shift I miss, well then color me chagrin, I was wrong I guess. I don't think I'm wrong. I think this film is just plain annoying.

I had a lot of fun with Sinners. It was a hoot. No, it's not original, and it's not profound, but it's joyfully put together with captivating set pieces driven by great music. The editing and the musical score act like one entity in the film, full of Baz Luhrman-esque montages where often multiple scenes take place at once. At first the editing style was a little jarring to me, but I started to vibe with it by the second act of the film.
There are times the film feels rushed, and considering the 2 and a half hour runtime, it made me wonder if a lot wound up on the cutting room floor so that they could get it within a reasonable runtime. Nonetheless, the film sped by.
I suppose I was hoping for a little more lore to the supernatural aspects of film, rather than being treated as a convenience for the story, and I expected little more originality, since the advertising kept the film vague so I was wondering what the big "secret" was going to be that the trailers were keeping. Well, there was no big secret. This is essentially From Dusk Til Dawn: The Musical. But I didn't mind too much. It's still a wildly entertaining feature worth the watch, especially for the musical sequences.
I think if you go in expecting entertainment rather than depth, you'll be satisfied. I'd watch it again; it's a good popcorn flick.
