I had no idea fans weren't enjoying this season until I looked at these ratings, which very much surprised me. But this season has, yes, been unbelievably nutso but soooo much fun. And the entire cast is very nice to look at, lol. Men and women. This show is important, too, for awareness purposes. There's a lot of debate in the country now about the topic of immigration and I can see how this season and show contributes to the debate, on both sides. There are lots of myths out there, and this show contributes to them, for sure. But we see the dangers stemming from the topic and this ought to be mandatory viewing for folks who want to discuss it (again, on both sides). The acting is still terrific, even with the crazy stakes being more heightened. It really is a popcorn show that never ceases to bring the thrills and twists.
Granted, I'm only halfway through this debut season, and will finish as I AM enjoying it. I just can't say it's great. But having grown up on bad 80s sitcoms, I feel nostalgic watching. It's obviously the gay Golden Girls (was this the one George Takei was supposed to do before he got canceled?) and could never be anywhere close to as good. It's trying so hard to be "gay gay gay," which gets in the way of the funny. But Lavin is brilliant. She makes it worth it. I'm not sure how they could do a season 2 without her. And Pamela Adlon in ep3 is also very funny.
But why are the gays not funny in the gay sitcom? Too gay, I guess. Don't browbeat us; even the gays get annoyed with that. Lane is somehow just OK in this (I think it's the material), Bomer is really not good at all at being the Rose Nyland ditz character (he's just pretty), and the other guy (I don't know of him) is a decent actor, you can tell, but also performing material beneath him.
It reminds me of silly old syndicated 80s and 90s sitcoms like "It's A Living," "Brothers," "We Got it Maid," "The Crew," "Jennifer Slept Here," "Love, Sudney," you know... Kinda bad with a funny line here and there but total comfort food.
Who knows though? By the end of the season, maybe I'll change my tune.

Yes, it's a steady slow build with marvelous performances, especially by young Odessa whom I hadn't been familiar with prior.
It's a rather unique ghost type story in a setting already creepy with or without chills (pun intended).
But the ending strengthened my opinion of what might have been rather forgettable (in spite of my compliments above). And the best part about it is, when the lights came up suddenly (and yes, the ending credits come as a bit of a surprise), I overheard the group of six next to me as they discussed the ending.
They had varied opinions but I was sitting there thinking to myself, "No, you didn't get it, that's not what happened, not what it was about!"
But then I had to think, "Wait, am I wrong?" Lol. So then I started reading different takes on the purposely ambiguous ending. And I just love when act art does that.
If you can see on the big screen, do that. Because the moderate pacing might lead to easy distraction at home and maybe not seeing everything in the shadows.
