Note de Foggy-Compo
This should've been an amazing film. It's more like the Russell Crowe show. I was expecting a gangster film about the rise of an incredibly intelligent, daring and merciless mafia style boss. What I got was a boring police drama with a bit of organised crime thrown in. I didn't give a damn about Crowe or Washington. It was flat. Considering Ridley Scott has some amazing films that hold you from beginning to end. He really dropped the ball on this one. The actors did not reach their potential in the slightest. There parts are well played but come across as being very one dimensional. They left their passion at home while filming. All I can really say is it's disappointing.
What an excellent fun filled horror film. If you want slick or arty cinema then you might want to leave your pretentious highbrow pseudo intellectual, wanna be film critic hats at the door. It's a stupid horror flick. But my goodness, it's great! It's an hour and a half of Nicholas Cage fighting possessed animatronic creatures. I have not enjoyed a film with such a thin premise as much as I've enjoyed this. It's put together well enough for it to be watchable and ultimately enjoyable. It's great that it doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. If there had been a hint of it be a "serious" project it would have failed in being the masterpiece of lunacy it is.
Or they'll be bored off of you. I can't believe I've just sat through this film. The true horror in this is that the director believed it to be worth making. An unlikeable man mourns the loss of his girlfriend when she leaves him. Good grief! How she managed to see anything in him in the first place is a real mystery. The finest detectives of our time could not solve why they would've been together in the first place. A monster movie? The only monster here is the poor plot. Where's the tension? Is it meant to be some metaphor for lost love or is it just a tale of some loser who punched well above his weight and has a mental breakdown because she ran off when she realised how awful he is? I would say more but don't want to add spoilers in case some poor fool would actually like to watch this film.
