But, it's one of those ridiculous 40's movies where everything just so happens to happen at the right time. It's also one of THOSE movies. You know, the "I'm a woman and you are such a wonderful man for saving my life so let's get married so you can have all of me... If you know what I mean" type of movies. I just couldn't buy any of this movie. I even found myself rewinding parts thinking I must have missed something because there's no way the plot could be that simple, obvious and kinda boring. What a disappointment from such a stellar cast and crew! Stick with television Ms. Ball. Oh, wait, she did. Dodged a bullet that's for sure! I love Lucy, but not here!
So, as an American I (thought) couldn't really follow what was going on because of all the Cockney Rhyming Slang used throughout. So, when I had finished it I had to read a synopsis. Turns out I was able to follow it pretty good and my initial reaction of "that's it?" was spot on. I kid you not, within five minutes into the movie I had already figured out what was going to happen to BOTH Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren's characters. But by the time it actually happened, I just didn't care. Oh and don't get me started on the music. I know when I think of British gangsters and or the IRA I think of 1980's synth pop with some sweet, sweet sax thrown in for good measure. As for the movie as a whole, I guess I was just expecting more.
