This is movie looked so cool in the trailers and it didint disappoint. i made sure i didnt know anything bout the story (apart from the premise) when i went into the cinema and i think that i benefited from that as it may have spoiled the movie. there are a lot of twists and turns in the story that it made me think... which is kinda different for a summer movie nowadays. but then again, its not a typical summer movie, or a typical spielberg or cruise movie either.
this film seems a step forward in both the director's and actor's careers. cruise plays a very flawed character which is refreshing to see, and spielberg has completely turned away from his kiddie-friendly event movies of the past. this movie is closer to his 'Schindler's list' than 'indiana jones'. this movie is stylish and really dark, with some jet black humour (like the bit cruise chasing his eyes)which seems to have evolved from 'A:I'. spielberg is clearly moving away from his past direction and stepping into a more dark and adult territory. i doubt we'll see another summer event movie in the vien of 'jurassic park' in the future.
the movie flows well, and it was impossible to guess when it would end cos there were so many climaxes in the third act. there are a few unanswered questioned at the end of the movie but i think that lends itself to the mysterious and dark atmosphere of this film.
there are very few special effects in this compared to other summer films which helps to make this more believable and real and does not swamp the quality of the cast. the effects usea are mainly classy adverts on the sides of walls and city-scapes that soon you get used to them and forget that they are effects. oh, and i must mention the lexus car - which looks so bloody good in this movie. there seems to have been a lot of development on what the future would look like - its not too advanced and therefore seems more believeable to me.
the acting in this movie is great and just what you would expect from spielberg and co. cruise is brilliant and very likeable - i cant believe he and spielberg have never worked together before. the twists and turns in this movie make you feel uneasy at times and there are some great shocks throughout the movie that would fit perfectly into horror movies.
this is a different type of work from the two big names who both seem to be moving on in their careers and this film can act as a springboard. but as a movie it is hugely satisfying and works well. kudos for the crew for crafting such a movie during such a pop-movie orientated time.

i'm not a star wars fan, so i guess i'm kinda neutral when it comes to reviewing this movie. i mean i've seen all the others but they just didnt grab me. i'm not saying they werent good films (Episode V being the best cos it was pretty dark) but after seeing Episode I i just couldnt get hyped up about this movie. i just went to see it with some friends, but i was blown away.
From the offset, as soon as the theme music starts up, you immediately fall into this universe created by Lucas and it seems so familiar now after four prior movies. the story moved well, picking up pace as it went along (which i think was Episode I's flaw as it started all action-packed then got strung out). There is a lot to take in as the story is very dense - full of sub-characters and names which seem impossible to remember now.
It seems Lucas has got a better hold of the story this time and plays the movie well. The acting from McGregor is much better this time and the rest of the cast do really well. there are a lot of good actors in this movie and they do not disappoint. Christensen and Portman and great and really sexy - i mean its not serious oscar worthy performances but it doesnt have to be - this is star wars. they seem to be having fun and that shows on screen which in effect makes the experience more fun for the audience.
This story is more darker than the first and is better for this. there are far less stupid childish gags throughout - so glad that jar jar is relegated this time to a tiny role. The action is awesome, from the speeder chase at the start to the huge battle at the climax (which really puts the name 'star wars' on display. And of course theres that fight with yoda (which made me laugh - which i dont think is a good thing) which was silly but looked bloody cool.
Talking bout yoda, the special fx really are special. the cgi characters look so real that you tend to forget you are watching a 'fake' actor. i think it was a good idea to animate yoda this time than use a lame puppet like before. the city-scapes look gorgeous and must have taken a lot of time and effort to create. the music is just what you'd expect from the legendary john williams and it really heightened the experience by bringing that familiarity back to the movie. the cinematography is epic and looks great. the colours and everything really look awesome on screen.
with this movie, i think Lucas has made a far more satisfying movie than Episode I as it is more dark and entertaining. the characters are used better, and further developed and you can see where lucas is taking them. that just leaves the third (or sixth if you will) and final movie to fill in the gaps. the third chapter should benefit from this episode as it sets up the sequel better than the previous one... cant wait until 2004.

This movie could have been sooo good if only... I was looking forward to it considering i thought the games were brilliant and scary... but the movie is so far from what made the games good its a total failure. Firstly the script was truely awful and thank god there are only a few lines in this movie or it would have been unbareable. The characters are largely irrelavent which is a surprise when they have two great actress in this movie (Jovovich & Rodriguez) who are totally wasted. Frankly you dont care if any of them survive. When i heard that P Anderson was gonna direct this, i thought he would make it a fun simplistic pop-corn movie with a few jumps in it. however he seems to have overblown the story and made a movie that is so stale with absolutely no horror in it. The music in the games was classical and eerie, but the techno music in the movie is not right when you are trying to make a horror movie (if that was Anderson's intention)- it plays more like something out of 'the matrix' but at a far lower quality. The intensity of the promotional trailers are totally missing from this film. The less-than-special effects are a huge disappointment, and the 'licker' monster thing is totally underused. The dogs were kinda good but the martial arts thing looked out of place and phoney. What i liked about the movie was the bit with the lasers because it was something new, and the beginning of the movie provided a good jolt into the film. the cinematography should also be commended as the sets are amazing. But the best bit must be the end as it sets up a sequel (which i'm not looking forward to now)kinda well. Unfortunately, overall, this movie just doesnt cut it. i'm not sure what it wants to be making it feel disjointed, and it wasnt scary at all!!! Oh well, i guess video-game movies should always be approached with caution. Oh well.
